Human Fear

When the strange solders appeared at the gate, Lef Kuka left from the back door and fled to his storage room.

The storage room was attached to his hog house and the entrance was somehow secret. When the door to the hog house was being opened, it covered the entrance to the storage room. If one wanted to get into the storage room, they would had to have the hog house door closed. However, since it was very dark inside, a stranger would never be able to see clearly the door to the storage room.

To protect the hog house from thieves, the only two windows were blocked with bricks, to keep the thieves out... and the darkness in. If the door was close, not even a sunbeam could possibly penetrate the barrier of bricks.

Lef Kuka bent and squeezed himself into the darkest corner, behind a wooden crate of wine. On the top of the crate, was laying a big rabbit's fur which was hunted and killed many years ago by himself ... a great accomplishment he had found it to be, it had happened to be a friday...at that time,- he had carried the rabbit, on his shoulders as he walked beside a hill, laid it on the center floor of the village, presented it, and showed how he was such a skilled hunter. He had the right to present himself as such a wondrous hunter, for no one had killed a rabbit of that size before.

That had happened a while before, on a friday to be precise, just as today...

Lef Kuka, still sitting cuddled against the fur....he smelt the bloody odor which lingered from the dead rabbit...and felt as thought he was close to hurling.

However, outside he heard the screams of his sister in law, Danusha, where the soldiers were continuingly stabbing her husband, Gega.

- I am in my motherland! - whispered Gega to them, - I am in my house!

Instead of getting out, Lef crouched even more into the dark corner, and had fallen into a big mistake, which he would regret it, not in this life, but in his after life: he prayed to god, that no one would open the storage room door.

His brother’s voice seemed to get quieter and quieter, (untill) it fell to a silence...and his soul and spirit lifted up and dissapeared into the sky.

At that moment, Lef Kuka felt a sudden drop of water, which had happened to fall onto his head.

When he turned his eyes up to see where it came from, another drop came down onto his face.

Outside, it was raining and unfortunatley, the roof was leaking.

He heard the footsteps of someone approaching the hog house, as he continued to hear dragging of feet, his heart continued to beat harder, and harder...as the hog house door opened and blocked the storage room entrance.

Lef Kuka felt a male’s hard breath, and heard his voice threatening in a strange language, jointly with Danusha’s crying begging him to let her go.

Just one meter away, behind the wall, the stranger raped his sister in law.

Lef Kuka felt as if his heart had turned into a broken grave stone. As time passed, his fear grew greater and he felt as if a big spider has been wrapping him with its webs and saw himself as a caterpillar inside a cocoon.

Meanwhile, the solders took all the animals from the hog house: the horse, two oxen, the cow, and a flock of sheep.

The chief’s voices and the screams of innocent people started to drowse away until, no ones voice was heard. At that time, he knew that God had answered his prayers and he felt great hope.

When the night passed, with all horrors, the morning came. The sunbeam brightened the world and all the creatures were peaceful. Life continued as if it were only a stream of water still flowing peacefully, as if nothing had happened...but it had.

Lef Kuka tried to move, but he could not. He felt as he didn’t have any legs, arms, or any possible muscles to move. He wished so badly that someone would come to find him. God knows, how many times he heard footsteps and voices from people he needed.

At one time, people searched in the hog house for any sign of animals, but they never opened the storage door which led to him.

Extremely exhausted, in him he had such little breath, and he wasn’t even able to make a sound.

When time passed by, voices came to a stop, and then he realized that God had granted his wish; and that the door never was going to open.

Then he closed his eyes to die.
