John began to make his way through a series of corridors that led to the elevator. On his way, he noticed a struggle out of the corner of his eye. He turned to see a disfigured man frantically clawing and biting at a woman's leg. Blood was everywhere, though he couldn't quite make out the source. She cried out for John to help her. He began to look for somebody to help, but all of his fellow co-workers seemed to be far more interested in saving their own skins. He realized that if he was going to save her, he needed to do something, now!

He punched through the glass on the emergency fire extinguisher. His hand started bleeding profusely, but he didn't feel a thing thanks to the adrenaline pumping through his veins. He pushed the man off Jenny and bashed his skull in with the fire extinguisher. The first hit caved his head in, spattering blood on John's shirt and face. He kept hammering down until he stopped twitching. Skull fragments and brains covered the floor, along with a few other fluids and organs he didn't recognize. John was sweating and shaking, and almost instantaneously felt the broken glass lodged in his fist. He banished the pain from his awareness and turned his attention towards Jenny.

She was crying in a puddle of her own blood, and there were literally chunks bitten out of her leg. He knelt down next to her. John honestly had no idea what to do. He couldn't call for help. No one else cared enough to help them. And on top of that, if tis 'virus' was anything like in the zombie movies, a bite would eventually be fatal. A million thoughts raced through his mind, and he had to force himself to calm down and think.

"It's bad, isn't it?" Jenny coughed. She must have seen the worried look on his face. He was never any good at hiding things.

"Umm... not for sure... yet..." He tried to put the sentence together, but couldn't quite get it out.

"Damn it, John! Even if I wasn't infected, look at my fucking legs! Look at my blood!" She started sobbing again.

"I... I don't know what to do..." John choked out. He felt tears well up in his eyes, and quickly tried to wipe them away.

"Just go. Don't let me keep you here. I'm done." She wiped his tears. "You have to go."

"For God's sake, i'm not just gonna leave you here!" He grabbed her hand. "I won't! I'll carry you! I'll..."

"It's been a pleasure, John, it really has. But you can't stay here! Karen needs you! Just... just leave me..." Her voice trailed off.

"Jenny. Jenny! C'mon Jennifer! You can make it! We can make it! I... I..." He sat there, crying. He stared at her lifeless body. "Holy shit, Jenny. What the fuck am I gonna do?"

He wiped his tears with his sleeve, stood, and got as much blood off him as he could. He looked at her one last time. John prayed to God she didn't turn into one of those things. As much as he didn't want to, he knew he couldn't just leave her there. He picked up the fire extinguisher one last time... and did her a favor. He destroyed her brain. Just to be sure. At that moment, something in him just cracked. This was no longer the world it used to be. It was now a dark, cynical, and cruel place. Everything had changed, and now he needed to change as well.

"Things do not change; we change." Funny how Henry Thoreau's infamous quote fit this situation so perfectly. Something wasn't adding up. A zombie outbreak just comes straight out of the blue? No... there must be something more. Could the government be hiding something? If not, then were was the army? He sat in deep thought for a moment. No, that was just ridiculous. Government conspiracy? Too obvious, he thought. Maybe terrorists are invovled? Possibly. Maybe God just hates us. If there is a God anymore... He was going to get to the bottom of this, he just needed to find Karen first. He mapped it out in his head. Get out of the the downtown area, get Karen, get to safety, and hopefully figure out what the hell is going on.
