CHAPTER 5
So that was exactly how we got used to living in Chickawulu- for the time being of course. Ralph and I spent the next few days exploring the city and it's surroundings. It was really amazing, the way the city was fit together. The intricatley carved statues that lined the pavements of the wonderful cavern! The ornate palace-like buildings and shops, with gold foil lining, it was all too good to imagine.
I got used to the lifestyle of Chickawulu and Ralph seemed like he was having a ball. We all were! Such peace and happiness is not something one can describe!
There was many an afternoon when I caught Ralph half gazing half staring at me. It was a little uncomfortable at first, but later I found myself gazing back. He was such a nice person, always running around looking for me if I ever wandered away. But that was the least of my concerns.
Almost every other night, Ralph and I sat together in the small room we were given to live in (Gar Hulland -whose first name we found out to be Patrick- paid for it, no matter how much we said we'd pay him back) at the inn, and discuss the means of getting back to 'civilization'.
Every time we did this, I would get a strange feeling in my tummy; as if to tell remind me that I did not belong here.
~ ~~
Despite the horrible feelings, we had plenty of fun! We found, that in the pub of the inn, there was a piano-like instrument. Ralph's face lit up as soon as he saw it! He hadn't told me he was as musically inclined, as he was smart (I found out he went to Eton)! So every night, we'd be downstairs listening to 'Rhapsody in Blue' or 'Vivaldi's Four Seasons'. Ralph was the best pianist in the entire universe.
The shops were just as interesting. The odd foods they sold were so prettily decorated! There were breads and sweets, fish and meats. We travelled to a market, where there were everything from clothing to vegetables was found! Here is Chickawulu, there was no set currency, mostly trading. When Ralph and I were walking along the beach, we spotted many a shell, and random deritius that had been scattered from ship and plane-wrecks. Many of these bits of debris was valuable, so we took them to be traded in the market for clothing and food.
We often visited Gar Hulland in his hut on the beach, and Ralph and I made friends with Hiljea. She showed us around, introducing us to her family (they were very fascinated by strange foreigners visiting) and friends who were all equally excited.
I'd lost count of how long we'd been gone, but according to the scratchings I had made on a stick, we'd been here almost two weeks.
~~~
Ralph had taken me for a stroll along the beach, to watch the sunset. It was a very blinding light and Ralph's usually big eyes were as small as a pig's. I used my abnormally large hands to shade away the light from the poor boy's face. He grinned and put his hand on top of mine. His hands were very warm.
We were there for quite a while, enough for me to fall asleep. Apparently Ralph had fallen asleep as well, because a violent shake woke both of us up.
It was Gar Hulland. He looked very distraught, and whispered hurriedly "Hurry! Get back to the main city! I'll explain later! Just get back to the inn!"
NOTE: This is not exactly my best novel... If you did not enjoy it, please leave some constructive feedback, and I shall edit it!
