There’s a different greeting, goodbye, handshake, smile, nodding or shaking of the head, and stance for every situation. I never told them it would be easy, but they seemed to expect it would be ten minutes and thought they were done after four handshakes and stances.

“We’re done!” Ruby said suddenly, I shook my head,

“There’s still goodbyes… and dancing.”

“No! We’ve been here for an hour!” Ruby was angry, I patted her shoulder.

“It’s going to take a lot of hard work to fit in here, why don’t we take a lunch break?”

At lunch, we all practiced our new etiquette and all. Ruby was doing good. So were Brock and Aidan. I was glad because they actually looked very relieved that they knew this after a few people in the kitchens said hello to them.

Then I saw Sarafina, one of our maids, she was being forced to stay here and work.

“I will get you free, this is why we’re here, I promise,” I whispered gently as I passed. She looked at me hopefully, a guard yelled at her to finish washing the dishes.

I had made my promise, I wouldn’t let my people be enslaved and killed, I would fix this or die trying.

Ruby and I returned to our “room” and went to sleep quickly.

“RISE AND SHINE!!” is what we woke to, Darla was standing on her bed, hands cupped to her mouth and the nastiest war face ever seen.

“You just about woke the whole castle!” Ruby yelled Darla laughed.

“Katy woke the whole castle, with her snoring! My yell was hardly as loud as that,” Marta snickered at Darla’s joke. Katy blushed and looked away.

“Darla, why don’t you go help the other maids they can’t mop without a bucket full of hot water like you.” I said rudely, Katy and Chloe perked up and giggled.

“Why… you…”

“And do finish your sentences dear,” I grinned, Darla was fuming, Katy, Chloe, Ruby, even Marta, were trying not to laugh. “It’s rather childlike when you don’t.”

I guess it’s an important thing to say, but we’ve all been using Belkish accents since we arrived- well… okay, only me. But Aidan, Brock, and Ruby were talking in the Dallan manner, which was only slightly different.

“Why don’t you just close your stuffed, fat, pie-hole?” Darla barked, I smiled in mock sympathy,

“I’m afraid I don’t shovel pie into my mouth, it’s not stuffed, and I am very thin,” I continued, maybe I shouldn’t have, but I did. “But at the feast, I thought I saw you shoveling pie into your mouth. Or maybe it was a hog that was eating; couldn’t be sure, they were moving so fast.”

Darla stormed out of the room, grabbing Marta’s hand and dragging her along. As soon as she was gone, the four of us left burst into laughter.

“I can’t believe you did that! Darla and Marta were the scariest girls ever back home! Nobody even dared talk to them!” Katy cried joyously.

“I didn’t know you had it in you Cel-!

“Jade!” Ruby corrected herself.

Brock and Aidan were laughing so hard when we told them.

“So you actually called her a hog?” Aidan asked I nodded brightly.

“A fat one too!”

“Oh, I could kiss you!” Aidan laughed, we all paused for a moment, “Maybe I will…”

I wrapped my arms around his neck and we kissed.

“You go, girl!” Ruby said. We pulled apart and blushed.

“Well, at least, love can’t be put out,” Brock half laughed, we did too, but it soon turned to sadness. I sat on Aidan’s lap and prepared to start planning.

“I see it in your eyes, Brock, what’s your plan?” Ruby asked, teasing him gently.

“Okay, this is how it goes,”

Basically, the plan was to send a message to Refton and ask for the army. They are planned to arrive on the night of the ball, and from there we invade during the ball. It would be difficult, but Brock was sure we could pull it off.

I wasn’t as sure as he was, though, there were so many flaws and doubts and uncertainties. We spoke about it until dinner, when another feast was held in our dining room.

This time, the king told us a story of war. The attack on Cragbury last year. He stopped the story right after the part where I had been kidnapped, from there he said no more. Ruby, Brock, Aidan, and I shared a glance

Our kingdom had fallen, and we all knew it.
