Millicent—

"We can only gaze with translucent eyes into the face of the unknown. Drawn into its peerless void, our senses and reasoning becomes dulled to the point of foolishness.

We know not why, but when a heart briefly grasps another, its secrets and mysteries are exchanged, intertwining these two hearts on a journey that will end in both tragedy, and unmatchable joy....

This...I did..."

The Job:

The stars above head twinkled infinitely, their glamour being seen from the bustling streets of Diamond. A young girl in a split end black dress walked up to the street and looked both ways before crossing, a basket of flyers and coupons dangling off her shoulder. Not too far away, a black Hover Car steamed to a stop in front of a bustling casino named The Smoke House.

“So all we gotta do is get past security, break in the vault, and carry 10 billion Credits back out here before anyone finds out?” said the driver, whose name was Dick. "Someone care to remind me how we're gonna do this without getting shot?"

“Erm,” stammered one of the passengers in the back seat. “Can you go over the plan again, Hunter?”

“Ya damn jackass,” yelled Hunter. “How many times do I need to tell you, Ratchet?”

“Just explain it again, Hunter,” the young girl in the car said. "You know how bad his memory is."

Hunter scoffed.

“Whatever, Erica,” he said. “So just for you, Ratchet, I’ll explain it again. You, me, and Erica are going to go inside. Erica is going to create a distraction at the card table by…erm—

“Showing everyone the goods while playing some damn good Black-Jack,” she explained.

“Right,” said Hunter. “While she's doing that, you’re going to go into the bathroom with your computer and take the security to the Vault, as well as the cameras, offline. Then I go in, grab the money, and get out here to Dick, who’ll drive us off.”

“Oh,” Ratchet said. “Oh right, now I remember!”

“Dumbass,” Hunter said.

“This is a terrible plan,” Dick sighed as he lit up a cigarette. “We’re gonna get caught."

“So when is the new guy supposed to get here?” Erica asked. “I heard he’s really cute.”

“Screw him,” said Hunter. “Let’s go, people.”

Hunter, who was wearing a suit with a black tie, Ratchet, who was wearing a dress shirt with a yellow bow tie, and Erica, who was wearing a sparkling red mini dress that stopped right above her mid-thigh with matching red high heels, entered the casino.

“Ratchet, you remember the plan?” Hunter asked him.

“Sure thing, Boss,” said Ratchet as he shifted his laptop bag uncomfortably on his shoulder.

“Good,” Hunter said. “I can’t get in the Vault if you don’t take the security offline.”

“No problem, Boss,” said Ratchet. “I can take the security off in a jiffy so we can steal all the Credits we need—

“Guys,” Erica hissed. “Zip it!” Erica whipped her hair around and approached the Black-Jack table while Ratchet stumbled off to the bathroom. Hunter looked around as he walked off towards the 'Employees Only' area. “Hey, boys,” said Erica as she forced herself on top of a man. “Oh my, Black-Jack, can I play?”

“Sure thing, darlin,” said the man whose lap she was sitting on top of.

“Yay!” she exclaimed as she picked up his glass and drank the remainder of his drink. "Whoo, this is some strong stuff! Dealer, what're ya waitin' for?! What's your hand?!"

“Alright,” the dealer said with a smirk, thinking he had easy prey. “My hand is 20, pretty damn good; let’s see if you can do better, hot stuff. A’s are worth 1 in this game.”

Erica threw down a stack of chips as the dealer threw down a card which was a Five of Spades.

“Hit,” said Erica.

“Okay then,” said the dealer as he threw down another card.

It was a Two of Spades.

“Hit,” Erica repeated.

The dealer threw down another card.

It was a Queen of Hearts.

“Seventeen, baby girl,” said the dealer. “Unless you get a four, which is pretty damn impossible, you lose—

“Hit,” said Erica.

The man she was sitting on nearly pissed himself.

“Are you sure, lady?” he asked. "My life's savings are riding on this—

“Come on,” said Erica. “Hit.”

The dealer smirked as he threw down a card.

It was an A of Spades.

“Okay, you got lucky,” said the dealer. “So that’s eighteen now, you still lose—

“Hit,” Erica said bravely. “If it isn’t Twenty-One after this…I’ll sleep with you.”

The dealer’s smirk grew even wider.

“I can’t be looking like a punk in my own Casino; if it is Twenty-One, I’ll throw in this Emerald Card,” he said as he placed it on the table. “It’s worth 5,000 Credits. You sure you wanna do this?”

“As sure as possible,” said Erica.

“Sorry, little lady,” said the dealer as he threw down the card. “Looks like I’m taking you back to my apartment tonight—

He stopped talking immediately when he saw that the card he threw down was a 3 of Hearts.

“Holy crap,” a man said from the crowd that gathered said.

"That's one lucky gal!"

“Hell yeah!” yelled Erica as she snatched the Emerald Credit Card off the table.

“Now wait a minute,” the dealer exclaimed as he looked at the card closer, as if it would change if he observed it.

“Sorry,” said Erica with a wink as she got up.

“Hold on, lady,” said the dealer. "There must be some kinda mistake!"

Suddenly the lights went out, and Erica went running for the door. She had to shove past a few people to reach, but the lights suddenly came back on just as soon as they went out. In the time that elapsed, Security had already organized themselves, knowing that something that was going on.

Ratchet came running out of the Men’s Room, his brow sweaty, and his computer barely back in its bag.

Hunter suddenly came sprinting out, Security Guards on his heel.

“Stop that man!” yelled a guard.

“You got the Credits?” asked Erica.

“I got it!” yelled Hunter. “Let’s go!”

Security, however, had developed a blockade at the door. With two sets of them closing in, it appeared that they wouldn’t be able to make it out in time. However, a man with spiky black hair wearing a sleeveless white dress shirt flipped down from the ceiling and stretched his palms out at the group at the door. His palm illuminated with blue light, and they were suddenly all frozen in separate blocks of ice.

“Is that him?” asked Ratchet. "That the feller we was waitin' for?"

“Go,” said the new arrival. “Hurry up!”

Erica, Hunter, and Ratchet all ran past him as he casted another Ice Spell at the group of Guards that were giving them chase.

He followed them back out to the Car and hopped inside.

“Who the hell is this?” asked Dick.

“Just drive, damn it!” yelled Hunter.

Dick took off down the road, swerving through other Hover Cars, and completely disobeying traffic rules. As he turned down a corner, three other Hover Cars appeared behind of them, their sirens going off as they pursued the group.

“God damn it!” yelled Dick, his cigarette falling from his opened mouth. “It's the City Guard! How in the hell did they get here so fast?”

“I’ve got them,” said the newest member as he rolled down his window.

“New Guy,” Hunter started. “What the hell are you doing?!”

The young man climbed out the window and onto the top of the Hover Car, trying to balance himself properly as the vehicle repeatedly swerved around traffic. He stretched out his palms and they soon illuminated white as a bolt of lightning emitted from his hands and struck the three chasing Cars.

“Whoa,” said Hunter as he crawled back inside.

“Let’s just get off the streets."

The Hover Car swerved through traffic and down the street, into the young night that smelled of success and victory.

His name was Lance, and this is just the beginning of his story…
