I rolled over on my back and stared at the ceiling. It was noon on a Saturday. So why wasn't Travis out doing something fun? Instead, he was sitting downstairs in my living room, playing some video game with my big brother, Luke. Sitting up in my bed, I glanced out the window. What was the date? Getting up, I walked across my room to my dresser where my calender lay. It was November seventeeth. It had been about, what? A month? Itried to thinkof something else before the images took over my mind. But it was too late.

"Excuse me, would you mind helping me carry my groceries to my car?" he had asked. He seemed like a normal dad in his mid-to-late forties. His hair was starting to go grey and he wore glasses. I had driven to the grocery store on the way home from Macy, my friend's house to pick up a jug of milk that my mom had told me we needed.

"Sure," I said, smiling. Picking up a bag of potatos and another bag of lettuce, I followed him towards his car. It was late, maybe eleven thirty at night. There weren't many cars in the parking lot. For some reason, his car was at the very edge. I didn't suspect a thing.

When we reached his car, he told me to put it in the back seat. He opened the door for me and I leaned down, preparing to place them on the seat. The push came quick and was unexpected. I flew across the car, hitting the top of my head on the inside of the opposite door.

"Hey!" I screamed. He leaped on top of me and pressed a gun to my temple.

"You be very, very quiet. Do not move. Do not try to escape, or I will kill you," he whispered. His breath smelled like alcohol and tobacco.

"Liz? Liz? Are you okay? Liz?" I heard Travis ask.

I snapped back. A scream escaped my lips.

"Get out! Get out of the car!" he had screamed, still pointing the gun at me. I did as he told me, thinking stupidly that if I did he would let me go. We were at an abandoned construction site about five minutes away from my house. I knew the way home. If I could just run...

"Get into the house!" he screamed, motioning to the half-built house to his right. I walked towards it slowly, him following close behind. Once I stepped inside, he brought out the handcuffs. Leadind me over to a post that went from floor to ceiling, he ordered me to lay down. I did. He handcuffed my hands around the post and kneeled beside my head. Taking out a dirty red bandana, he gagged me.

"You stay nice and quiet now," he whispered into my ear, "and I'll make you feel real nice."

I was shaking now.

"Liz! Liz, plese, look at me. Liz? Can you hear me? Do you want me to get your mom?"

I felt the tears rolling down my cheeks before I registered fully what was happening.I was crying? I hadn't cried in forever. Noticing that Travis had his arms wrapped around me, I saw that we were both on the floor. I was laying mostly on top of him, and he was holding me, breathing ragged.

"Liz?" he asked hopefully, "What happened?"

He wrapped his arms around me tighter and gently put his head on my shoulder. "You scared me," he whispered.

"I came up here to see if you were asleep, and you were laying on the floor. Your eyes were wide open and tears were just running down your face. You weren't moving and you wouldn't say anything when I talked to you. You were just, frozen."

I nodded and snuggled into him. "Thank you," I whispered.

"For what?"

"For being here."

"I'll always be here, Liz."

Letting my head fall onto his chest, I said, "I know."

Opening my eyes, I started to stretch out, only to realize that I couldn't. Travis and I were still on the floor, and we had both fallen asleep. His arms were still wrapped around me, preventing me from moving. Not really caring, I let my head fall back against his chest and closed my eyes, drifing into a dreamless sleep.

I felt myself being picked up in strong arms. Opening my eyes a crack, I realized that Travis had picked me up. He layed me out on my bed and covered me up. Walking over to my window, he closed the curtains. I pretended to be asleep when he walked back over to me. To say the least, I was surprised when he kissed the top of my head and tucked me in some more.

"I'm so sorry, Liz. I'm so sorry I couldn't protect you," he said under his breath. I obviously wasn't supposed to hear that. He kissed my head again and then without another word, walked out.
