Rolling out of Peter’s bed, I rubbed my eyes. I had the whole day stretched out in front of me, and nothing to do. Glancing over at the clock, I was shocked to see that it was two in the afternoon. Peter got off of work soon. It was nice because he had very short shifts. I sighed and rolled my shoulders, wondering what I should do.

An hour later when he got back, I was sitting on his porch, reading a book. I glanced up at him as he came up the stairs, smiling.

Suddenly I remembered something that had happened earlier this morning. Had he kissed me? My mind reeled, trying to remember exactly what had happened. Had it been a dream? Certainly it must have been. He would never kiss me. We weren’t anything but friends.

“Hey,” I said brightly.

“Hey,” he said, coming up to me.

I slid out of my chair and gave him a hug. Breathing in his familiar scent, I pulled him even closer.

“Did you have a good day?” he asked, pulling away.

“Yeah, it was relaxing. I just woke up an hour ago.”

“Huh, well someone slept well.”

I grinned at him.

He smiled back and walked into the house. I followed him in.

“I think I might give Tyler a call,” I said.

He froze. “What?” he said, still facing away from me.

“Well, I thought maybe I should give him another chance. Maybe yesterday was a big misunderstanding. I’ve thought about it a lot. We should at least talk, don’t you think?”

“No,” he said, slowly turning around to face me, “I don’t think that’s a good idea.”

“Why not?” I said, partially shocked that he disagreed with me.

“Because…” He suddenly looked like he was fighting something within himself. He was having some internal conflict. He fixed his eyes on me, and then took a step towards me. Stepping right in front of me, he gently cupped my face. Running his thumb over my cheek, he stared into my eyes. He put his other hand on the other side of my head, weaving his fingers in my hair. He looked nervous for a second, but then ready, like he was about to do something that he’d wanted to do for a long time. I barely had time to process what was happening before he pressed his lips to mine. His lips were surprisingly softer than I had imagined. I kept my hands by my sides, not responding to what was happening. My whole body was in shock. When he pulled back, he looked happy. But his expression changed dramatically when he looked at my reaction.

“Peter?” I said, my voice quiet.

He suddenly looked embarrassed. Backing away from me, he turned around and walked through the living room into his room. He shut his door, and a second later I heard the squeak of his bed as he sat on it.
