I slid into the chair next to Tyler and glanced up.
“You know, Michelle,” I said, laughing slightly. “You’re never going to have to worry about being fat.” We had become fast friends, Michelle and I, over the past few weeks.
“Why?” she asked.
“Because, Tyler will just eat your food, so you won’t have that temptation to eat.”
She laughed, nudging Tyler.
He just rolled his eyes, smiling. “I don’t eat her food!”
She gave him a look. “Yeah you do, babe.”
I laughed again, but it died in my throat as I glanced across therestaurant. I had been beyond shocked when I saw him sitting there when we walked in. However, I had recovered quickly and acted like I never saw him. People came here all the time, so it shouldn’t have been that big of a shock to see him here, really.Peter was sitting with some other guy friends he had. He was laughing, his head thrown back. His mouth was open wide, showing his naturally straight teeth. We still hadn’t talked at all.
“Alex. Earth to Alex,” I heard Michelle say.
“What?” I said, tearing my gaze away from Peter.
“What were you staring at?” she asked.
Tyler gave me a look. “I know who,” he said.
“You do not,” I said, already looking back over at Peter. He took a drink from his bottle of water. When he put it back down on the table, he glanced over towards our table. Our gazes locked.
My breath caught in my throat. I wanted so badly to go over to him, to say something to him. I could hear Tyler and Michelle talking to me still, but I couldn’t understand what they were saying. I wasn’t paying attention.
Peter turned away abruptly. I blinked and came back to reality. Glancing down at the table, I could feel myself blush.
I glanced up at Tyler.
“Why don’t you just go over to him?” he asked.
I narrowed my eyes at him. “He made it very clear that he wanted nothing to do with me.”
“Don’t be dramatic,” he said.
“I’m not being dramatic.”
“Yes you are,” he said. “He had a point in what he said.”
“It wasn’t a good enough point to break up with me!” I said, my voice rising.
Michelle’s eyes widened.
“Alex. He had a point.”
“We could’ve gotten over it together. Instead he just gave up on me. It was the worse time to leave me! My dad—”
“He didn’t even know about your dad.”
“He never gave me a chance to tell him!”
“Alex, you’re shouting.”
“I don’t give a damn!” I said, standing up. I didn’t have to look over atPeter to know he was looking at me. He probably had an adorable frown on his face. I knew him so well. I turned on my heel and quickly made my way out of the restaurant.
Thankfully, I didn’t cry. I didn’t let myself. Pressing my fingertips against my temples, I closed my eyes. I was sitting outside on the bench.
I took my hands away from my face and glanced up. Tyler stood in front of me.
“Alex, you have to stop. You’re making yourself miserable.”
“Don’t tell me what to do,” I said.
He sighed. “You’re acting like you’re five, Alex. It’s time for you to suck up your damn pride and just talk to Peter. I know it’s killing you not to.”
“Shut up, Tyler! He doesn’t want me.”
“Or is it that you’re just too scared to figure out?”
“What does that even mean?”
“It means that you’re too scared to make the first move.”
“I’m not afraid of Peter!” I said, getting up from my spot on the bench.
“Then what are you waiting for?”
“Why can’t you understand that he just doesn’t want me?”
“Because that’s not true!”
“You don’t know that!” I said.
“It’s obvious, Alex! You have to be blind if you don’t see it! It’s in the way he looks at you!”
“Stop being so stupid!”
Tyler sighed. Reaching out, he grabbed both of my shoulders. “Alex. You know I love you and you’re my friend, but you have to open your eyes. He still likes you. He was trying to help you out by breaking up with you. It was hurting him to watch you get hurt. Doesn’t that tell you say something?”
Tears were prickling my eyes. “He abandoned me, Tyler, at the worst time possible.”
“I didn’t say he was perfect, Alex.”
I scoffed. “He’s far from perfect.”
“But so are you.”
“Tyler, I so don’t need that right now.”
“But you do, Alex. You need to hear this.”
“It’s not going to make a difference.”
“I’m not going to go up to him.”
Tyler smirked. “Right.”
“What’s that supposed to mean?”
“You’re going to get to a point where you miss him so much that you won’t be able to stand it. Then you’ll go back to him and he’ll take you back and you’ll live happily ever after.”
I rolled my eyes. “You’ve gotten this all figured out, haven’t you?”
“Too bad you’re wrong,” I said, sitting back down on the bench.
He sighed, sitting down next to me. He wrapped his arm around me. I leaned into him and put my head on his shoulder. It was like this with Tyler. We were close, but there weren’t any feeling between us. Romantically, I mean. “It’ll work out, Alex.”
“You know Tyler, I’m not so sure that it will.”
He rubbed my arm and sighed again.
