Chapter Two

Too hard to let go

LAYLA

Panic! At The Disco blared in my ears as I walked down the streets of New Haven to meet a old friend at the coffee shop. His name is Edward and when I say old friend, he's my cousin, and the only family that lives in New Haven.

It feels kind of weird to live here. I mean, in a new environment, new people, and things like that. I stop at a busy street, and check all of the signs above stores, and then I found the coffee shop that Eddie was talking about earlier.

I ran across the street and opened the door of the shop. As soon as I got in the warm smells of coffee and baker food hit me. I took a deep breath of it while taking out my ear phones and stuffing it in the back pocket of my torn pale blue jeans.

I look all around the store until I find my cousin, sitting at a booth by the huge shop window, and looking out, bobbing his head to his Itouch that was laying on the table. He didn't even bother to put ear phones in it, so people around him that was middle aged mostly, gave Eddie the evil eye. He just winked back at them.

Yep, that's my Eddie. I smiled, and walked over to the table. He didn't notice, he was still rocking away to the song on the pod. I listened in to it, and heard someone singing, he had a nice voice. I slid into the booth across from Eddie.

“This is amazing,” I said. And I also scared the crap out of Edward, his eyes widened, and he jumped in his seat.

“Oh my god, don't scare me like that!” his deep voice yelled, but he was smiling. “Then again, you are my cousin Lay,”

Edward scooted out of the booth and stood up. He had on blue skinny jeans and a black V neck that showed off his muscles and tattoos. Eddie defiantly had the bad band boy thing going on. He picked up a hand that was laying on the table and pulled me out of the booth.

As soon as I stood before him he pulled me up in a giant hug. He smelled like soap and shaving cream. When we pulled apart, I reached up and tousled his hair a little. He had tousled brown hair, but I felt the need to mess it up even more like old times.

“I missed you, Edward!” I said, pulling him back into my embrace. We rocked side to side clinging on to each other. I really did miss him, the last time I saw him was last year, and I didn't talk to him because that's a week after my break up. I was in my room, in a hole, not coming out to the painful scary world. At least that was my prospective of things.

Edward chuckled then broke the hug, he sat down in the booth and I followed along sitting back on my side. Edward reached to touch the pause button on the Itouch.

“Who was that band?” I asked.

“Um,” Edward said, but dodge the question and asked another question, “Did you love it?”

“Uh....YES! The singer is really good,”

Eddie smiled.

“And that guitar solo! Pure genius!” I yelled, and a old lady with a really high up-do gave me the evil eyes, I blushed, and dropped my eyes to my lap.

Edward looked at me confused, then at the lady who was still giving me the evil eye. “Uh, Lady? Is something wrong with your eyes?”

The lady looked taken aback by his sweet voice. Too sweet.

“No,” Lady said.

“Then get your eyes off of her, and back to your table,”

The lady kept looking in utter shock, “Excuse me?”

“I think you know English,” Eddie said, “Fuck off!”

The lady turned around really quick when she heard him snarl. I probably would too. I tried to hold it in, but I couldn't, I laughed so hard. Soon, Eddie joined me with his weird chuck.

“So, anyway, that's the band I just joined, we are called Clockwise. I'm the guitarist,”

I beamed at him, “You are amazingly amazing,”

“Amazingly amazing?” He asked with a laugh, “Wow, I must be good,”

“No joke,” I said, shaking my head.

“Better not be!” Eddie said. “Oh, and by the way, I already ordered our coffee and stuff,”

I smiled, “Me don't care,”

He laughed, “So...How's Yale doing for you?”

I smiled, “Awesome. Monday I moved in, Tuesday I was given a tour and finally, today earlier I had all of my classes,”

“Do you have a roommate?”

I frowned thinking of Gina. She just says hi and goodnight to me. We don't talk that much, I really recked things with her.

“Yeah, Gina,” I said.

“What happened? You say her name all sad like,” Edward observed.

“Uh, I did something bad,” I said, looking down at my hands resting on my lap.

“God, you look like one of the girls from 'Pretty Little Liars'!” Eddie said.

That caught me off guard, I looked at him, “You watch that show?”

“No, my girlfriend is in love with that show,” Eddie said dryly.

“Wait-girlfriend? What about Darcy?” I asked.

Edward raised a brow at me.

“I always thought...” I was shy all of a sudden. Shy to speak something that all of my family told him. But I know if he heard it from me, then he would know that it's true. I never ever lied in my whole life. Ever. When I try to, I tell the truth right after that so I don't think that counts as lying.

Darcy Finn has always been with Eddie, they were connected by the hip. They was always laughing and wild. Edward is always the mean guy, and she the nice girl. They balanced each other out. Everyone thought that they would together in the end...I guess.

A lady came to our table and laid down two big mugs of coffee and a plate of chocolate chip cookies.

I beamed, “Cookies!”

He laughed, and we digged in and chatted on lighter topics, like how the people in my classes look. We joked around and laughed like old times, but Edward texted a little while he talked to me, I was kind of offended, but we are family...so I guess it's okay.

“So..what did you do that you needed a Pretty Little Liars scene?”

I laughed, “I yelled at my roommate, because she started talking about Liam.”

His face dropped and he looked out of the window, and back at me.

“Your not over that, Lay?”

“I am,” I protested. Looking down at my fingers lace together on my lap.

“Lay...why are you wearing that pull over then?” Edward asked, looking at the pull over.

“Because it's mine,”

“No it's his!” Edward hissed.

I shook my head, and looked down at the floor.

“Lay...Liam is over it,”

“Why would you say that? You don't know,”

“I do. When I came back out that year when you was in your room, I went to hang with Liam. Like old times, he had a girlfriend already, Kathy Packer. They are still dating today, Lay,”

That really opened the hole right back up. Actually, opened it wider if anything.

“That's in the past,” I said.

“Lay, your clinging on, let go,”

I got up and got all of my stuff. “I'm leaving,”

“You always run away,” Eddie said.

I walked to the shop door, tears leaking out of my eyes. But I have to turn around and say this.

“Eddie, are you love?”

“Maybe,” he shrugged.

“Exactly. Your not. So, unless you have experience with this painful shit. Then talk to me, don't give me this fake stuff about clinging on,”

“Whatever, Lay,”

“I'm not! The past is the past!”

“Yes! Now, say that truthfully, and stop lying to me,”

“Fuck you, Edward,”

LUCUS

“Uh, how much is this one?” I asked, looking into the glass box at Tiffany's & co. It was a diamond bracelet and It looked like something that Nelly would wear. I leaned against the glass case, and looked around the people for someone who worked here. Like lighting, a lady with a huge fake smile showed up.

“This one is the most expensive in the whole store, are you sure?” the lady asked, looking at the bracelet.

“Is that how you make business?” I asked with a smile and a wink.

The girl blinked at me, and nearly fainted from that. I laughed to myself, and looked back down at the necklace, then up at her.

“I'll ring it up for you, Mr...?”

“Stone,” I said.

“Stone? As in, the Stone. As in the biggest law firm in the country!” She squealed, and now she smiling a true smile.

“Yes, and I need the bracelet,” I said.

“Oh, right this way...”

I followed the lady and bought the bracelet on my father's tab. I took in a sigh of relief when I was out of the jewelry store. I walked down the street to my apartment building, and took an elevator all the way to the top to walk into the penthouse. Only to hear a female and male screaming in pleasure from my kitchen. I walked to the noise, and god, I regret doing it. There, on my Island was Danny and a hot Asian chick doing it.

I covered my eyes, and yelled, “God, Danny, what the hell?!”

“Oh, hey!” Danny said, and still heard him pumping away. Oh, god. “You want to join on this man?!”

“I want you to get this chick out of my apartment!” I yelled, and stalked off to my room.

This was something that only Danny can pull. That key was for emergences only and of course he will abuse it. I sighed, and sat down on my bed, with my hands rubbing my face. Soon, my cell phone went off.

“Hello?” I said.

“Hey, baby! So, I was wondering if we can do the birthday thing at my place? I'm cooking this French dish that I learned from those cooking lessons,” Nelly's voice came from the other side of the phone.

I smirked, and looked at the bag I left on the dresser. “Hmm. Sounds good to me,”

Nelly laughed, “Good. Make sure you bring a present! I loved the gold toe ring, and the dimond earrings!”

And with that she hung up phone, I sighed, looking down at her number blinking on the phone's screen. We did this for Christmas, where I buy her millions of gifts to make her happy. I've been dropping jewelry for her that's less expensive all week. She loves it, and that's what all women are about right? Give some to get some. At least if you want a girlfriend that does part time modeling for Victoria Secrets.

Daniel walked in with just his underwear on, he had a huge smile on his face, and had his hands on his hips. I rolled my eyes, and went over to my closet, and looked through, trying to find something to where to Nelly's tonight.

“So, Luke, I know that you. Man, you should have got in on that,” Danny said, taking a seat on my bed, then picking up a remote to turn on the TV.

“Uh, theres this hot model, daughter of Gregory Hays, ring a bell?”

“Oh, Nelly?”

“Nelly? My ass, yes fucking Nelly, I have a girlfriend, Dan,” I said, pulling off my shirt, and trading it for a button up shirt.

“Luke, when did that stop you with, Chelsea, Blair, Kathy, Samantha,” Daniel said, ticking off his fingers.

“Uh, Danny, Nelly's different,”

“Ah, yes, she's hot, and you don't want lose her,” Daniel said, flipping through channels and settling on a football game.

“Some what,” I said, going to my drawer and pulling out a black tie.

“Well, that's no fun, your getting old, I think your Dad is more fun,” Danny said.

I shook my head, and sighed. Yes, my dad was a cold man or is one, I can't help but love him, I mean, c'mon he's my father. What made me think that he was cold was the fact that he cheated on my mother, it was shocking with a ten year marriage and all. But we are all past it, Mom has a new husband that she's in love with, and Dad is a old player. Oh, and my little sister Caren is a spoiled brat, that's why she's under my dad's wing.

“My father is...” I said, shaking my head once more not being able to finish.

“Cool, rich, lady's man?” Dan guessed.

I laughed, “Explaining yourself, eh?”

Daniel laughed also, but broke off and pumped a fist in the air when he saw his team make a touch down. “Oh, what did you say?”

“Never mind, jack ass,”

“Oh, God! You've been messing with that stupid tie for the past ten minutes!” Danny said, getting up and going over to me to tie it himself.

I chuckled, I never knew how to tie one, my Dad never taught me how to. He was in work, making his law firm be successful. I had no choice but to become a bigger fan of my mother, and unfortunately, she knew nothing about tying ties.

“Thanks, man,” I said, walking back to my closet to get my black cardigan sweater, while sliding it on I watched as Danny fell back down on the bed his eyes glued to the TV.

“Yeah, whatever, so what are we doing tonight?” He asked.

“I'm going solo for the night, well without you,” I said, shoving my feet into some Gucci loafers that Nelly got for me a while ago.

“What? Your my parter in crime!” Danny said.

“What? Any other night, I'm not, why tonight?”

Daniel sighed, and walked to the kitchen. I walked behind him with my arms folded over my chest. Danny got out a bottle of whiskey and poured a large amount in a glass cup.

“So, what are you doing to tonight?”

“Nelly's making me some French dish,” I said, then got the bracelet before heading toward the door. “Oh, and by the way, no girls while I'm gone,”

Danny nodded, and downed all of the drink.

-----

“Luke!” Nelly squealed running up to me. She was wearing a little black dress with funky pink heels, and her hair was in a up. I scanned her lovely slim body, then kissed her lips.

“Hey, babe,” I said.

“Come, come!” Nelly sang, grabbing my hand and leading me to a the dining room table. There was two plates of food. And what was on the plate, was...green. That's all I could say, and it looked kind of gross.

I sat down, lied and said the food looked great. She beamed, and digged in. I dipped my spoon into the goo and put it in my mouth. It was the most disgusting thing that I have every tasted. I downed it like a man though.

I nodded, and respond during our conversation. She ranted on and on about gossip, and things while I was just thinking about what we were going to do tonight. Soon, her plate was empty, and mine hardly touched.

“So, where's my present?” She beamed, raising a brow.

I smiled, and pulled out the black box. She giggled clapping her hands, and she took it from me. She opened the box, and her face fell. She pulled out the necklace, and looked at me with the most angry face I could ever imagine.

She stormed from the table to her room, and then came back with the same bracelet. She shoved it at me.

“How could you?! The same thing! You were supposed to give me something better! Oh my god, Samantha got black diamonds! And what did I get? Something that I already bought for myself you idiot!”

I looked at her in total surprise. This was the first time she blew up on me, and for this reason. God, I think I know why men go gay, because women are so difficult. I tried to stay calm.

“Honey, I'm-”

“God, and Gigi got a very expensive Ralph Lauren dress!”

“Baby-”

“Oh don't you baby me! Your pathetic!”

“Y'know what? FUCK YOU NELLY!” I said, and pushed away from the table, and grabbed the bracelet I bought too. I walked to the door, but while I was in the threshold, I turned to say, “That dish of yours tasted like cow shit and it looks like it too! I thought your taking cooking lessons,”

*

“Shit, shit, shit, shit, SHIT!” I whispered.

I was standing outside of the apartment, and looking at Nelly's window. God, I'm going to lose my girlfriend. How can I say that to her, I'm so stupid. She was just upset because I go the wrong gift. I should do something. But I need advice. That's it!

I walked toward the Yale campus, I could talk to Gigi! She always knows, she's like the nicest girl I've ever met, and she gives good advice. I was so in my thoughts that I didn't even notice a girl storming out of the coffee shop with tears streaming down her face, and she ran right into me.

I looked down at her, and she looked so heartbroken that it broke mine into two.

“Um, are you okay?”

She looked at the ground, and back at me, before bringing it back to the sidewalk and keeping her gaze there. She shyly shook her head no.

“I'm not having such a good night, either,” I said, running a hand through my hair.

She looked back up at me, and looked at me really hard, like she was looking for something. That when I noticed that she had the most amazing eyes, she's brown eyed. Something that I've always liked about a girl, they are so warm. She also had rich dark brown hair, and I think it's long because her ponytail isn't that short, it's long and wavy actually.

She didn't look like the girls I hang out with. She was wearing a really big dark red pull over hoodie that was way to big for her. She had on torn black skinny jeans, and converse shoes. She was pretty though, I'll give her that. Only if she would take that hoodie off, then she would be hot.

“Uh, I'm L-”

“ I know who...” she said, then closed her eyes, swearing under her breath. I found that weird, but all girls are weird, fact proven ten minutes ago in Nelly's apartment.

“Oh, well, since you know who I am, I need a person to talk to. Me and my girlfriend, got in this fight, and I need help,”

She looked behind me at the direction of Yale, then behind her at the coffee shop. And back at me, like she was making a decision, she wiped her face with her sleeve, then finally nodded her head after looking at me some more.

I smiled, “So, what's your name?”

She took a deep breath before her soft small voice said, “Layla,”
