Chapter 6
I woke up the next morning, still in Jared’s arms. He was sleeping. Vicky was now driving, Aaron in the passenger seat, asleep. Vicky looked frustrated and upset. “What’s wrong, Vicky?” I urged.
She jumped at the sound of my voice, probably used to the silence. “Nothing, Steph.” She said. I could hear the anger in her voice. She didn’t like me; that was for sure.
“Look, I don’t know what I did to make you not like me, but we are struggling for survival. Holding an unnecessary grudge probably isn’t the best thing at the moment.”
“Look,” She was mocking me. “I don’t know you. You kinda just jumped in the picture out of nowhere and ruined anything me and Jared ever had a chance of having and we don’t even know if we can trust you or not. You may be planning to murder us or something. I don’t know.”
“Do I really look like someone planning a murder, Vicky? And I think you ruined anything you and Jared could have had when you started dating Aaron, don’t ya think?”
She slammed on the brakes. “You don’t know anything about me or Aaron or Jared, so you need to butt out!” I felt Jared wake up.
“Why are we stopped?” he asked, yawning.
I looked at Vicky, narrowing my eyes. I took Jared’s arm off of me, and moved away from him. He looked at me, sadness in his eyes, but I just turned to look out the window. I jumped at the sound of a huge bang against the back of the car. We all looked back, and Aaron woke, confused as to what was happening. A zombie was pressed against the back window, moaning loudly.
Vicky began driving again and stayed focused on the road. “What just happened?” Aaron said after ten minutes of silence.
“Nothing, honey” Vicky said with a sweet, innocent voice, and grabbed his hand. I felt Jared move next to me, but I kept my eyes focused on the power lines outside the window. He put his hand on mine and I moved it.
“Steph-” he started, sadness in his voice.
“Jared, please. Just drop it. We just need to survive. We have no time for romance or love.” I hid my face from him, tears filling my eyes.
“Vicky, get off at the next rest stop you see that looks safe.”
Ten minutes later, Vicky got off at an exit and we stopped at the rest stop. Vicky and Aaron just sat there, confused as to why we were there, but they didn’t question Jared.
“Steph, I need to talk to you. Come with me, and we’ll get a bite to eat if they’re open.” Jared said to me, opening the door for me. I got out and he followed me. He held my hand and pulled me inside and sat down on a bench. I sat beside him and looked down at my fingers.
“Steph, I know it seems like I used you for my own good, but I feel like we can possibly turn our friendship into more. I really care about you. I heard you and Vicky’s conversation. Don’t tell her that though. She hates eavesdroppers. But don’t listen to her, okay? She just wants what she can’t have. And now that I actually see you, more than just a friend- I don’t know. I like the thought of us; More than the thought of me and Vicky. Besides, she has Aaron now.”
“I just don’t want to get between you two. And I don’t want Vicky to hate me, Jared.”
“Don’t worry about Vicky. I love you, not her. And when she realizes that, she won’t hate you; I promise.”
I bit my tongue, not knowing what to say. So many thoughts ran through my mind. I didn’t know whether to say “I love you” back or not.
I looked up at him, into his beautiful eyes, and it just came out, effortless. “I love you too”.
He smiled at me, and grabbed my hand with both of his and kissed it, and then he looked back at me and kissed my lips. The warmth of his lips on mine was incredible. I wish I could have stopped time right there. His lips were so soft; so sweet.
I noticed I was just sitting there, eyes closed. I opened them and noticed him smiling and blushing. I couldn’t help but smile back and kiss him again, this time longer and more passionate than ever. The movement of his lips with mine, so in sync, was breathtaking. I ran my fingers through his hair and I felt his warm hand on my cheek. In that moment, I felt loved for once in my life; I felt beautiful and wanted.
I pulled away and ran my fingers through his hair one more time. He smiled, exposing his perfect teeth.
I stood up and looked around, noticing the whole place was deserted. That meant only one thing- the virus had hit here already. I didn’t hear any moans though. I walked to the Dunkin Donuts, still full of food. I grabbed three bags and filled them with doughnuts, muffins and croissants. I noticed Jared standing outside of the Dunkin Donuts, staring at me, smiling. I attempted to carry all three bags, but couldn’t. Jared was by my side in second, and got two of the bags.
We went back to the car and I gave Aaron and Vicky a bag and put the extra bag on the floor, making sure it was tightly closed. I got a muffin out of the bag for Jared and me and quickly ate it, hungry as could be. We continued driving to nowhere, hoping to find some kind of life.
I fell back asleep in Jared’s arms, as did he.
