The black sheet of night was illuminated with what remained of the fire that five minutes ago was a roaring inferno. A small silver pelted kittypet called Metal sat in front of a pile of burnt wood and pieces of scattered metal.

Glittering tears trailed down his fur, as he realized his home had been destroyed, his housefolk with it. The home he had lived in for a year. The housefolk he had gotten to know so well. Gone, in an instant. Metal didn’t know how the fire started, as he was playing out in the woods at the time. But, as an acrid smell reached his nostrils, he knew something was wrong. And he was right.

He stood up slowly, his thin body shaking with fear. He padded softly through the wreckage, his paws burning slightly with the heat that remained.  He dared not to look at the two-leg bodies, as he was afraid of what they would look like. A chill went up his spine.

Metal’s eyes drifted through the wreckage, as he saw what remained of the items in the house. His watery eyes settled upon a soft looking lump of fabric. His old bed. Thoughts placed themselves in his head. Where was he going to sleep? What was he going to eat? And, where was he going to live? He sighed, realizing his situation.  He would have to start a new life. A life in the forest.  But. There was one problem. He didn’t know how to hunt…  I’ll guess I’ll have to learn, he told himself. It couldn’t be too hard, could it? I mean all you had to do was…

A slight rustling noise broke into his train of thoughts. He tensed, as he directed his gaze towards the bushes on the east side of the property. He saw nothing. But he defiantly smelt something. He padded silently as he could out towards the bush, hoping it was just a rat. As he got closer, the scent became more familiar, yet it had a strange hint to it. Cats, he thought instantly. Maybe it was a loner like him. ‘Loner’… the word seemed strange to Metal, as it had not been used around him in a while.

But, he didn’t just smell one cat. He smelt many. He froze as a large group of cats and several kits emerged from behind the wild bush. At the front stood a handsome tom, with broad shoulders and a shimmering pelt of brown fur. Behind him, a smaller she-cat with a dark grey pelt whispered something, and many of the cats fixed their piercing eyes on Metal. Metal’s mouth was open with shock, as he stepped back in disbelief.

“Hello kittypet,” said the large tom calmly. He set his blue eyes on Metal. “I am Hawkstar, and this is SongClan.” Hawkstar took a slow step forward, the she-cat followed. “And, I am Roseleaf,” Announced the she-cat. ”State your name.” she added in a hiss.

Metal closed his mouth, and took a nervous step forward. “I-I am Metal.” He said in a delicate whisper. ”What do you want?” he cried, his distressed voice echoed through the empty night.

Hawkstar sat down and quietly sighed. “You lost your kittypet home. “He began slowly. “And StarClan wishes for us to accept you in our clan.” Roseleaf shot a surprised glance at the leader. Had StarClan really said that? “How old are you, in moons?” Hawkstar asked as he closed his eyes.

“Uh…” Metal replied. “Uh, six moons…?” Who was StarClan? He asked himself. And why did they want him to join a clan?

Roseleaf directed her emerald-green eyes toward Hawkstar. “And what will his apprentice name be?”  She asked.

Apprentice name? Thought Metal. What are they talking about? He took another step forward, as he placed his cautious eyes on the two cats.

“He shall be named Silverpaw.” Hawkstar announced. He turned around to face the group of cats behind him. “And Cloudmask shall be his mentor.” A small grey-silver she-cat stepped forward. “A mentor to a kittypet?” she protested. “You’ve got to be kidding me!” Roseleaf turned and hissed at Cloudmask. “Hawkstar does not kid. You shall mentor this cat, and mentor him properly, whether you like it or not!”

Hawkstar placed a gentle eye on Cloudmask. “A naming ceremony shall commence tomorrow for this young kittypet.” Cloudmask frowned, but remained quiet. A small she-cat emerged from the crowd, her blue eyes cold and unfriendly. “But Hawkstar, how do you know this kittypet is willing to learn the way of Clans? How do you know he can hunt? How do you know he can -, “ Hawkstar cut her off calmly. “Wildleaf, I’m sure he will respect the way of StarClan, and he is a kittypet, so I would not expect him to know how to hunt properly.” Wildleaf stepped back into the crowd of cats, her head bowed. Hawkstar smiled at Metal, who was backing away slowly. Hawkstar came closer, and Metal stopped. “How about it, Kittypet. Will you join our clan?”
