Metal lazily walked with the clan, sticking to the back of the group. He had agreed to join SongClan as an apprentice and learn the way of the clans. As he walked, he felt sets of eyes upon him. He kept his head low. He had come to the conclusion that it was quite rare for a kittypet to join a clan. He wasn’t planning on joining, but seeing as the whole of SongClan had come to invite him, he took up the opportunity. Plus, joining the clan guaranteed food and a place to live. Maybe he could find a mate or at least a friend too. Surely the whole clan wouldn’t hate him? He sighed. Roseleaf, the deputy, didn’t seem to be a fan of him, and neither did Cloudmask, his mentor. He wasn’t sure about Wildleaf, but she didn’t look all too friendly. He shook his head, trying to clear his thoughts. There would be at least one cat in this clan who would like him. There had to be… hadn’t there? He sighed, his head still bowed. Maybe joining the clan wasn’t such a good idea…

He lifted his heavy head, noticing a small white and black spotted she-cat standing next to him. She smiled at him brightly, her blue eyes shining beautifully in the moonlight. Metal’s tail twitched as the she-cat spoke. “Hi there, kittypet,” she begun. He voice was as smooth as silk.

“H-hi there,” Metal croaked nervously. He couldn’t tear his eyes away from hers.

“My name is Whitepaw, and I’m a medicine cat apprentice,” You could tell the she-cat was nervous, even a bit shy.

“Medicine cat apprentice?” Metal asked curiously, his head slightly tilted. Whitepaw laughed softly. Metal couldn’t understand why, but soon the she-cat spoke up. “You’ll get use to clan talk soon enough,”

“Oh,” Metal smiled. “How old are you?” he asked quietly.

“Same as you, six moons,” Whitepaw answered instantly. She examined him with her eyes. “You look pretty strong.”

“Thank you,”

“Whitepaw, what are you doing?” A voice came from in front of them, forcing Metal to pry his eyes off the she-cat and face a large black tom with glowing green eyes. “I’m talking to the kittypet. He’s very nice,” Whitepaw mewed. Metal smiled as best as he could at tom, who softened his gaze. Metal gathered that he was Whitepaw’s father, and he was wondering why his daughter was talking to a strange kittypet. “Oh really?” The tom replied. “The name’s Darkflash,”

“Pl-pleasure to meet you, Darkflash,” Metal croaked nervously. Metal quickly glanced at Whitepaw, who was gazing at him in an odd way. Darkflash smiled at the two apprentices, before turning his head and padding toward the front of the group. Metal breathed a sigh of relief. He hadn’t realised he’d been holding his breath the entire time. Whitepaw looked more relaxed too. “Was that your father?” Metal asked curiously.

“No,” Whitepaw answered, her voice emotionless, her face unreadable. “He’s my older brother. My father died when he was attacked by a fox,”

“Oh, I thought…” Metal’s voice trailed off, knowing he had possibly just surfaced a painful memory for Whitepaw.

“No, it’s okay. I never really liked my father.” Whitepaw pretended to smile, but pain clouded her eyes. Metal half smiled, touching her apologetically on the nose. Whitepaw was just about to speak, when the clan reached their camp. Metal looked ahead, noting what the entrance looked like. The entrance was made of vines draped lazily over low branches in the surrounding trees. Twigs had gotten entwined delicately throughout the vines, forming a protective hide. As the cats trailed in one by one, the sky got lighter. It was almost sunrise. As Metal and Whitepaw walked through the vines, the dawn patrol set off in opposite direction. Metal watched them as they walked, noticing how strong and brave they looked. “That’s Eaglewhisper and Brackenear.” Whitepaw pointed out. “Anyway, come on,” Metal hadn’t noticed he had stopped walking. He quickly continued into the large clearing ahead of them, his eyes wide with surprise. “Welcome to SongClan!” Whitepaw cheered, smiling brightly at him.
