Leah, just follow him! Wherever he’s going it's instinctual, Jake ordered.
For crying out loud could you tell me what’s happening? I asked.
Amber could be in trouble, he said hesitantly.
What sort of trouble Jake? I demanded.
Look Leah, I wouldn’t expect you to run all over the place without reason. You know I get it, but I’m not kidding around here this could be serious.
It is serious, Cameron growled, Ryan is unpredictable.
He knows his pack and I’m not taking any chances, Jake agreed.
Wait, do you think this is me saying no? It’s not, I told him.
I’m not cold hearted though I’d give anything to be. Cameron’s beaten face when he told Kyle that Ryan was out there somewhere was chilling. I’d seen that expression before. He felt he’d let him
down.Obviously Ryan being unsupervised in this state wasn’t ideal.
Kyle didn’t waste a second and shifted in a second, but I still saw his face. I looked right at him. The only way I could describe it was it was like someone died. I had to gasp as he sped past me.
I don’t know if I even remembered to exhale. I was already chasing after him, ready for anything that was coming. Clearly he wasn’t and someone had to be.
We’d caught up with Kyle by then. I pushed ahead of him but he wouldn’t let me in front. I couldn’t compete with someone in his state of mind. I settled for staying close behind him. Jake was right
by my side and Cameron was just behind, not even attempting to get ahead. It seemed he thought it best to stay out of Kyle’s way.
How serious could this be? I asked.
Right now I’m just going to be happy I don’t know, he replied.
Good plan. Hey, shall we split now or- I stopped.
I caught a human scent but Kyle was already on it, skidding around the corner to follow it. It must have been Amber because his breathing was already coming in relieved gasps. I felt relief flood
into me too, knowing I wouldn’t have to face anything extreme today. I slowed down but Cameron gave Jacob a hard look.
Leah, circle right around and see if you can pick up Ryan’s scent.
You know I don’t know his scent but whatever. I am so overworked.
I sped up the slight hill and went the longest way around I could. I searched for the scent of an unfamiliar wolf that’d been here recently but it was totally nonexistent. I heard a pursuit behind
me and saw Cameron heading my way. He went past me and ran even further up. He turned and nodded.
So he must have been here human- no tracks. He might not have transformed...
I passed Cameron who was going to see where the trail began. I followed the almost human scent that was Ryan’s, retracing the complicated way he’d decided to move around the trees. I caught his
scent on ruined trunks that had been smashed to pieces by an abnormally powerful fist. Anyone that angry had definitely transformed.
I sped up, following the mess he’d made, not even bothering to sniff anymore. He might as well have left a breadcrumb trail. I jumped over a fallen branch and kept running. But I almost stopped
dead in my tracks when I caught a faint trace of another scent, this one all too familiar.
I smell blood Jacob.
Dead silence was quickly replaced with Kyle’s wordless cry and both Jake and Cameron’s orders. All were a mix of emotions and words creating a deafening noise inside the cage that was my head.
Let me go Jacob, I know my freaking limits!
Was he honestly worrying about how much of this I could take? There was a life in danger and I was going to do all I could. How could I be touchy about imprint right now? Jake agreed with my
Fine, but get there before him, now. Go.
Time seemed to pass so slowly until I finally got there. I hadn’t even noticed I’d passed Kyle but I soon realised. I was the first there and the others would arrive any second. I transformed and
pulled on my shirt and shorts. Both stained from being dragged through the thickening pool of blood.
I skidded across the floor trying to get to Amber, scraping my legs from ankle to knee. I tried to stem her bleeding but there was so much blood I couldn’t see where it was coming from. Only her
face was untouched. Her eyes were closed.
Around me was chaos as Cameron tried to control Kyle and keep him out of my way. I don’t know what the hell he was doing that for; I didn’t know what I was doing. Kyle punched him in the face and
ran to my side, grabbing Amber’s hand.
“She’s not dead, she’s not dead, no...” he kept repeating.
He kept choking on his words and wouldn’t even let go to wipe his tears. Now wasn’t the time, but his pain opened old wounds as I tried hard not to remember what it was like not knowing where Sam
had gone. And then finding out that my worry was a total waste. I wasn’t the one who had to worry about him anymore.
“Look I don’t have a medical degree but you’ve got to stop,” I snarled harshly at him over the noise of Jacob’s howling, as he called the packs.
“Shut up would you just-” he yelled.
I felt her heartbeat under my hand. It was pitiful and weak. I knew there was little time but I didn’t know what to do. It’s hard to admit how scared I was for him. He could lose everything.
“Look I’m scared too okay?” I whispered but he ignored me.
“Mouth to mouth,” he was muttering, brushing her hair from her face so I shouted.
“She’s bleeding to death not suffocating! And I can’t find where it’s worst! Until I do there’s no help for her,” I screamed as I searched for the offending wound.
There was a thunder of the packs appearing. All three packs had come- Cameron’s Jake’s and Sam’s. Most of Cameron’s pack transformed to drag Kyle from Amber but he wouldn’t let go of the girl dying
in his arms. Suddenly he was taken away and she was in mine. I felt her stir back into consciousness.
“Oh God,” I gasped as I saw the state of her back.
I found a vicious injury and ripped off half my shirt to stem the flow of gore. My arms were slippery with it and I struggled to keep a hold of her. Her eyes flew open and she cried out suddenly
arching her ruined back. Her scream reached Kyle who roared in response.
I stuffed my arm in her mouth to let her bite me. It muffled her screaming as I stuffed the piece of my shirt inside her.
“Amber please don’t scream its killing him, oh God no you can’t close your eyes though! Listen to me, stay awake damn it,” I screamed through my tears. I hadn’t even realised I was crying. I was
feeling for Kyle like everyone else there.
I hadn’t noticed the crowd of now human wolves around me until then. I could only imagine the amount of howling if we were wolves. Looking at them was like watching a family mourning at a funeral.
It wasn’t the first time I’d felt like I didn’t belong there. I let them take her but didn’t leave go of her hand.
“Let Jacob drive in front, he’ll take you,” I said to Cameron’s pack. I ignored how light headed I was becoming all of a sudden.
“Take us where?” one asked. He was younger than most of them and his richly coloured skin had paled. He looked like he was fighting tears and I quickly wiped away my own.
“To the Cullen’s house,” Jake said with a set mouth, “its close.”
