“Jakey what’s going on?” a voice asked.
I registered a small, extremely pale figure with curly hair in the doorway to the vampires’ house. Jacob had told me about her before- she was his imprint. I couldn’t remember her name but I
knew she was a half vampire. Her hair shone a reddish bronze colour in the dim light. Amber’s always shone pink gold.
“Oh my God,” she cried, clutching his arm.
“It’s fine okay Nessie? Don’t now,” he held her.
Amber was conscious again, and screaming with the agony that ripped through her every time she was moved. The sound of it tore through me too and I tried to muffle the sounds coming from my
mouth with my hand. Nessie was trying to get past Jake to help Amber. Everything around me was spinning and it made me even more unsteady when a vampire ran past me to get her. Nausea overwhelmed
me and I vomited.
“Someone help him out for Christ’s sake- Leah!” Jake shouted while still comforting Nessie.
I spat the disgusting taste from my mouth, and squeezed my eyelids together to force out the moisture. I looked up to see Leah stony faced, and up to her arms in blood like me.
“There’s nothing I can say to him,” she retorted shakily, “Sam will have to, or get one of his pack...I don’t know!”
“Edward where’s Carlisle?” Jacob called after the vampire. “Fine, don’t answer, whatever right? I’m not worth an answer.”
“Shut it Jake,” a female voice from inside called.
I was only vaguely aware of all of this going on. I didn’t even realise I’d tried to follow the vampire called Edward, who was carrying my Amber in his arms. I could see her long sheet of
hair disappearing swiftly through the doorway. Several hands blocked my way and I crashed into them, blindly.
“Jakey, Grandpa’s not here he’s at the hospital...” Jake’s imprint worried rapidly.
Her bell like voice was drowned out by another muttering in my ear. Hands grabbed me roughly by the shoulders and I looked around, confused. Dark eyes, steely with determination looked right
back at me.
“Kyle she’s going to be fine okay? As soon as the doctor gets here it’ll all be over,” Cameron assured me.
“They’re vampires Cam, they...” my words wormed their way into my mind, before they finally made sense.
“Kyle, please talk to me!”
“They’re vampires Cameron, let me go! Amber!” I shouted but I was surrounded with people restraining me.
All I could think was how stupid I’d been to agree to let them take her here. She was in more danger of dying at their hands than of her injuries. There was so much blood how the hell were
those vamps going to stand it? I knocked someone in the jaw before my wrist was pinned against my side.
A sleek car screeched into the driveway and a blonde haired vampire in blue scrubs jumped out. I fought to get to him but there was no use.
“Don’t touch her! She’s mine, you better not touch her,” I cried breathlessly.
He surveyed me in an almost sympathetic way before he walked towards the house and spoke as though his coven were already out there in front of him. Of course, they have excellent hearing.
“Alice you can bring Jasper out here away from everything. I’m sure he’ll agree when I say this young man needs his assistance. Bella, I think you’d better run over Charlie’s so he doesn’t
come over,” he said quietly.
A female vamp ran out of the house and another appeared by my side. She was short and petite with a shock of black hair. She skipped over with someone who was clearly her mate hovering
behind. He already looked wary of the situation as she led him towards me. Carlisle the doctor ran past them into the house already asking the rest of his coven to fetch him supplies.
“What are you doing to her in there?” I asked.
I felt strangely calm now and my breathing came more even. I didn’t feel like shouting after anyone or screaming accusations. I felt Cameron’s grip on my shoulders loosen until I was free to
“I need to know what’s happening. She’s my imprint,” I said desperately.
“I know and Carlisle is going to do his very best to save her. He is the best. I could tell you what will happen but there are so many wolves involved I can’t see,” she trilled, irritable
towards the end of her speech.
“What are you talking about, what have wolves got to do with anything?” I asked her, confused.
“Oh it’s nothing, I forgot,” she said offhand.
“Alice there’s a lot,” her mate said stiffly. He had a southern accent. She frowned up at him, nodding in agreement.
“Yeah I know Jazz,” she faced me, “Would you mind coming somewhere else with us? It’s just there’s a lot of blood. Jasper can’t handle his thirst as well so we avoid these situations when
they come around.”
She looked me in the eyes without hesitation. Hers were a honey gold. I felt as though I should be shouting by now, protesting against having vampires near Amber while she was in this
condition. She’d just admitted this vampire Jasper couldn’t control himself but I accepted this information more calmly than I thought possible.
“I’d rather stay here,” I shook my head.
“Alice I don’t mean to be disrespectful but it’s not just the blood,” Jasper said jerking his head towards me, “Could we go?”
“Yeah, just calm everyone Jazz, they could all use it. You can help from a distance,” she said, giving him a kiss on the cheek. She danced off into the trees, pulling him with her.
I dragged myself over to Leah who was sitting on the bonnet of the truck. She was covered in blood and half her shirt had been ripped away. She rubbed her temples like her head ached. She
looked at me and flinched at my gaze. I didn’t say anything and waited for her to speak.
“Today was eventful,” she murmured.
I found I couldn’t speak. I didn’t even know why I’d come over to sit by her. I guess I just needed to do something other than stand there staring up at the house.
“If you’re wondering why you’re calm it’s because of that bloodsucker,” she nodded in the direction he went, “he’s got this lovely freaking ability to make you feel calm, when you really want
to rip him apart.”
I nodded because I didn’t have the strength to put words together and form a sentence. I was being made to wait outside as vampires, who were meant to be my enemy, tried to save Amber. It was
“Alice is psychic but she can’t see wolves,” she smirked slightly.
“You can go now Leah,” Jake said.
We both looked up to see Jacob and his imprint Nessie. She had her head rested against him and her eyes were dropped to the floor.
“If only you’d said that the moment we arrived. Lover boy and his imprint plus those leeches- they’ve just made today for me,” Leah said. She leaped off the truck and ran off, kicking dirt
behind her. She didn’t turn to look back.
“She’d kill me if I told you why,” Jake shook his head when I looked at him questioningly.
“Jakey, do you mind if I go see Grandpa Charlie? Mom’s already there,” Nessie said quickly.
“Huh?” he said.
“I’m distracting you before you say something that’ll give her an excuse to kick your butt,” she admitted, “come on.”
“I’m coming back okay Kyle? I’m just dropping her off.”
I nodded half heartedly as Nessie rested her head against him again. I couldn’t meet her eyes. I knew she was sorry for me. I watched them all the way to his car. I felt sick seeing them
happy together. You couldn’t help being happy when you had your imprint. Even if the world is burning around you her presence alone makes it better.
“What happened?!” I heard a vampire yell from inside the house.
“Her heart’s failing, lack of oxygen-”
“Pass them quickly!”
I ran towards the door frantically pushing past people or objects, whatever stood in my way. I heard the frantic beeping of a machine through the shouting. The beeping sped up until it
stopped. Suddenly it was a long continuous noise.
