Journal Entry #1 September 29th, 2077

Uh hey. So my youngest son bought me this journal for my birthday and I promised him i’d write in it every once and awhile. I’m not exactly sure who is going to ever read this but you know. Maybe my future self. Hey me, how are the kids? They better be in college. Hopefully you’re not still living in fucking Alaska. I hate the cold but Leana and the kids love it. That’s all that matters but I wouldn’t mind living in Arizona. Christ I’m bored. The only thing on TV is all this shit about the war in China. Why don’t they just surrender or why don’t we just back the fuck off. We can find alternative sources of power. Ugh whatever I just hate this whole war, something bad’s gonna happen I just know it. After the fighting in Anchorage I thought it was over. Man was that scary, we live down in Fairbanks but still I thought that was the end. We’re going out to eat so I guess i’ll add to this later. Bye, I guess.

Jessie closes the journal. She sees there are other pages filled in and decides to read on later. She feels her arm start to burn. In all the excitement Jessie almost forgot about being injured. She looks to the cot and sees a first aid kit. She opens it up. Inside is roll of gauze, four stimpacks (A syringe commonly found in first aid kits used for healing serious injuries quickly) and two bottles of purified water. Clean water being a precious commodity, Jessie quickly opens a bottle of water and drinks about three-fourths of it. Feeling hydrated, Jessie poured the remaining water on the wound and wraps a piece of gauze around her arm.

Jessie looks in fridge for something edible, she finds two full bottles of whisky and a half empty bottle of vodka. “Talk about aged to perfection.” Jessie thinks to herself. When she closes the fridge she sees a small pile of opened M.R.Es on the left side of the fridge. While wondering where the man in the journal may have found them she opens the journal and skips through a couple pages and finds an entry a couple weeks after the date of the great war.

Journal Entry #6 November 12th, 2077

I went outside today to see if I could find any supplies. I found a small military checkpoint on College Rd. The soldiers still had their clothes on...mostly. There were some M.R.Es in their pockets. Some of them had fused with their skin from the heat of the blast. I became i’ll and vomited right fucking there. God writing this isn’t helping. The checkpoint was near the intersection next to Noyes Slough, just incase I forget.

Jessie quickly gathered her things, grabbed a couple stimpacks and a water bottle and headed for the exit when she remembered her pursuers were probably still waiting for her outside. She had to dispatch them if she wanted to survive. In a holster, Jessie had a 32. revolver with four rounds in it. If she remembered correctly there were three raiders that chased her. She also had a fairly large combat knife in a sheath. She was outmanned and outgunned but Jessie knew she could outsmart some idiotic raiders. Jessie pulled the lever to open the concrete door and moved inside the second fridge which was empty. As she hid she could hear footsteps walking into the room. The raider who walked in instructed his friends to stand watch outside while he looked inside.

Through the fridge door she could see the raider slightly diagonal to her. As he inspected the room he looked toward the fridge. He reached for the handle and as he did Jessie pushed the door forward and slammed it into his face. The man yelled, calling his friends over. Jessie slid out, moved behind the man and drew her knife. She held it to his neck and the other raiders approached guns drawn. “I don’t want to kill anyone just leave me alone and we can all walk away from this.” Jessie said without hesitation. “Just shoot the bitch!” said the man being held hostage by Jessie. “You’re gonna die. Right here, right now.” One of the other raiders said. Jessie thought for a moment through the tension. There wasn’t going to be a diplomatic solution to this and although Jessie avoided violence as much as possible she was no stranger to it. Jessie stuck the knife in the man’s neck and before the others could react she pushed the man at the other two and pulled her revolver out of her holster. She fired twice hitting both men in the upper torso near the collarbone. They fell to the ground. One man gasped for breath, Jessie approached the man. “What a waste of bullets.” she said in a calm and collected tone. The raider took his last breath and died, quickly bleeding out.
