I gripped the bed sheets,my body breaking out in a cold sweat. Tears fell from eyes and I thrashed my head. I was running through a forest, barefoot and bleeding. My jeans were torn and muddy, as was my shirt. "Ariel! Ariel!" The voice was deep, with a Southren accent, and I knew then who it was.
I ran into my house, crashing into my mother. I cried into her skirt, not realizing that she was ten foot tall. "Mommy! Mommy! Some bad man is coming to get me!" The chuckled that followed my words came from behind me. It wasa deep chuckle, one that meant harm. I screamed for my mother to help. "Help me, Mommy!" She didn't, she stood there as my father grabbed me and dragged me away. I still screamed for her.
She rushed outside as I lay in the grass alone, like my father hadn't just been there. "Ariel! Ariel! What are you doing out here by yourself? I have told you not to be out here alone!" She grabbed my shoulder and jerked me up. The knife swung down. "You need to be punished!" She screamed. I cried out as the knife connected and I jolted awake.
I grabbed at my throat, barely able to breath. "St-Stephen?" Something moved beside me and fell off the bed, tears falling and landing on my bare legs. The blanket shot up and suddenly there was a huge figure standing in front of me. It leaned down and grabbed hand. I tried to jerk away, but it held tight. I opened my mouth to scream, but nothing came out.
"Ariel. Calm down, it's me, Sebastian." I latched on to him then. We stood in the middle of his room, our arms wrapped around each other.
"What happened?" I asked, still shaken from the nightmare. Sebastian rubbed his stubbed jaw on my head, mussing my hair. He lead me to his bed, his hand engulfing mine.
It was quiet for a minute. "Well, you didn't tell me where you got the scar. Instead we talked about my father; mostly what Teddi told you. You snuggled up to me as I told you about the time Teddi and I were playing in the mud and our father was coming home from a day of drinking. You fell asleep before I got to the bloody part. Then you began to have a nightmare. I tried to wake you, but it didn't work." He petted my hair and I relaxed against him. "Stephen and Teddi came out. Stephen didn't seem at all mad about you sleeping in my bed." Sebastian stopped talking, so I let my eyes fall close. "What was your nightmare about?" He asked.
"Nothing." I murmured. "Just a silly little kids story." Sebastian hugged me close.
I woke to the sun slashing across my face. I pushed back my hair and realized I was in bed alone. I threw my legs over the side and walked into the livingroom. When I found nobody, I went to Stephen's room. He wasn't there, so I went to the room that was supposed to be mine. Teddi wasn't there, so I went to the bathroom and brushed my teeth.
My brown hair stuck out, so I patted it down with water from the tap. I found myself sitting onthe sofa, flipping through the channels. The door opened and sun light flooded the growing house. Teddi walked in, taking off her beach sandle. "Hey, Ariel." She said, flipped off her Aviaters. I waved, going to the news for Saturday morning cartoons.
"Where's everybody at?" I asked.
"Well, Stephen is working again and Sebastian is hunting."
"Hunting? Hunting what?" Teddi sat in the recliner. She glanced at me.
"Food." And she left it at that. We sat in the livingroom for awhile, just me and her, watching SpongeBob. "Give me that damn remote. I'm sick of cartoons." I tossed it to her and she changed it to Jersey Shore.
I sighed and got up. "I hate this show." I moved around the couch to the kitchen and began to clean.
"Me too. The guys just look tastey."
