Jane was a nice girl, a shy one to say the least. She never tried to stand out; she picked up the trash of others around her, and would go out of her way not to cause any trouble. The problem was, that Jane was a jinx! And when she did cause trouble, it was catastrophic. People died. Like just last week for instance, when she was out getting groceries in Manhattan, she was crossing the road as the light turned green and a car didn't see her. By the time it did, it was too late; it swerved, and Jane was lucky she wasn't hit. The car hit another and there were two deaths. Now, this wasn't exactly unusual for Jane, she had people die because of her on a yearly basis. And being the twenty-year-old girl she was, she had killed a total of thirty-five point five people (one died and came back to life) in her lifetime, just because of bad luck. This was only unusual because Jane only ever got into terrible accidents between the summer and winter solstices. This was in April. After her accident, Jane decided it was too dangerous for the people around her, and that she would leave for an unpopulated area in the middle of nowhere. This is where our story begins, when young Jane is in the airport waiting for flight 23 to arrive...
I don't really understand why I was drawn to Greenland, (I mean, of all places!) but I just was. There was a vibe on the air, and Greenland seemed like the place I needed to go. I was at the airport with my few belongings, preparing for something huge and I had no idea what to expect. Of course I had looked the place up, gotten a room at a hotel until I find a permanent house, and communicated with someone who was supposed to help me when I got there, but I still felt I had no clue what I was getting into.
Here I was, feeling ridiculous in my big green winter coat, basically all alone in this terminal, waiting for the unknown.
I was informed, a few minutes after my arrival, that the unknown was late. The plane would be, in fact, forty minutes late. I decided not to sit here like an idiot, but to get up and wander around instead.
I found myself in a small bookstore next to a rather popular cafe. Some of the books were quite dusty, not having been touched in several months. I liked these ones the best. A book on Greek mythology intrigued me the most. It was on one of the highest shelves in the very back of the store. The book was called The Journey of Athena, and it was a collection of myths and legends written from the point of view of the Greek goddess of wisdom. Why it was called the journey of Athena when it wasn't about her, I didn't know, but I was pulled into to the thick novel any way.
I brought the book to the cashier and quietly payed for it. He gave me a small smile when he saw the title and he said two words. Good luck.
I frowned. What did he mean by that? Crazy old guy. I thought to myself. I walked back to my seat, drawn in by the book I was holding. I flipped to the table of contents and skimmed through the titles of stories it has. I chose Medusa's story, just because we have all heard of her, but never really heard her story. I am intrigued once again.
Medusa and her three sisters, the gorgons, had started off by being beautiful, they thought they were the most beautiful who men of all the people in the whole world. Now here, there are two versions of the story. One says that one day Medusa was in Athena's temple, and was looking at her paintings and saying how much prettier she was than Athena. This enraged the goddess, and in consequence she turned all three of the gorgons into the evil, ugly creatures they are known for. The other version of the story was that Medusa was again in Athena's temple and was caught sleeping with Zeus. Her and her sisters got the same consequence. The sisters went on killing people as they may with their ugliness. Medusa's sisters were immortal, but Medusa was not, so it was she who was slain by Persious. One version of the story was that he simply showed her her own reflexion with a mirror and she died just like that, and another is they had a lengthy battle while Persious was blindfolded.
By the time I was finished reading the story, my jet had arrived... (To be continued…)
