the next morning Snape found himself preparing for potions class. Striding through the room, he instructed the class, "There will be no foolish wand-waving or silly incantations in this class. As such, I don't expect many of you to appreciate the subtle science and exact art of potion-making. However, for those select few who possess the predisposition..." his sights falling upon a greasy haired Slytherin, Draco Malfoy, "I can teach you to bewitch the mind and snare the senses. I can tell you how to bottle fame, brew glory, and even put a stopper in death." His attention turning to Mr.Potter, who was busy scribbling rather than listening to his Professor. Snape's arms coiled against his chest, "Then again, maybe some of you have come to Hogwarts in possession of abilities so formidable that you feel confident enough...to not-pay-attention," voice raising as Ms. Granger nudged Potter's arm, making eye contact with Snape once more. Snape curled his cloak against him like bat wings, "tell me, what would I get if I added root of asphodel to an infusion of wormwood?" ignoring the arm flailing of Granger, "you don't know? Well, let's try again...Where would you look if I asked you to find a bezoar?" Potter quietly replied, "I don't know sir." Snape asked another question, in a way, replenishing a kind of joy out of being smarter than the James Potter look-a-like, "What is the difference between Monkshood and Wolfs bane?" Snape moved closer to the table as Potter just shook his head, "I don't know sir." Snape felt himself smiling on the inside, "Clearly, fame isn't everything...is it, Mr.Potter?" his face still masked with his sullen expression, he knew that Harry wasn't James, but it helped in his guise of caring for the boy, not for Potter's sake, but for Lily's. Once class had ended, Snape rushed out as quickly as he had come to find Dumbledore.
Standing outside the statue of the Griffin, Snape made sure no one was near, returning his gaze to face the stone and spoke the password, "Sherbet, Lemon." The statue wound its way upwards as a staircase coiled to Dumbledore's office. Snape found Dumbledore at his desk, writing notes as his Phoenix watched the quill flutter; Snape gained the Professors attention, "Head-Master, sir." Half moon glasses glinted in the candles resonated light, "What can I help you with Severus?" Snape came forward, "I need to tell you about Professor Quirrell..." Dumbledore raised his hand and smiled calmly, "Fear not Severus, I have already guessed your concerns. In addition, I would like to ask you to keep an eye on him, for I fear there may be more to the Professor than either of us can know." Snape nodded, "I will keep close watch on him then; thank you, Head-Master." slipping back down the staircase to the common-room to the Halloween feast.
Watching the students stuff their gobs, Snape found himself pondering more on his suspicions. Snape had lost sight of Quirrell, he was nowhere in the common-room; about to search for him, the doors burst open as the man in a turban was running and shouting, "Troll in the dungeon! Troll in the dungeon!" Quirrell stood at the middle of the tables, "Thought you ought to know," before fainting to the floor. Students began to follow suit in panic until Dumbledore shouted, "SILENCE!" Everyone stopped in their tracks and turned their attention to the Head-Master, "Everyone please not panic! Now...prefects will take their houses back to the dormitories...teachers shall follow me, to the dungeons." that being said, Snape slipped away from the crowd and teachers as he headed to the third floor while the others went after the troll.
As the staircase started to move, Snape started climbing his way up to the third floor. Making his way through the door and past the torches that lit as he moved past, he stopped at the locked door with his wand at the ready, "Alohamora." Shutting the door behind him, he had no idea he was going to encounter Fluffy, the three-headed dog. Before he could give a flick of his wand, the heads snapped at him; the head off to the left caught just the end of his pant leg while the middle head bit down at his leg. Snape quickly waved his wand before the third head came to chomp at his mid-section, "Petrificus Totalus!" knowing the spell would only petrify a beast that size for a mere moment. Shutting the door quickly with his back pressed to the wood, Quirrell was between the torch light in the hall. Snape made a quick grab at the Professor and asked threateningly, "Well, well, Quirrell...what brings you here?" Quirrell struggled for words, "I-I-I was trying to f-find a safe place away from that dreadful m-m-mountain troll." Snape scowled, forcing Quirrell's back against the wall, "Likely story as it sounds Professor, but this corridor is far more dangerous than any troll, so let me ask you, once-more...what are you doing up here?" Quirrell stammered on, terrified, "I-I s-s-swear Severus...I-I-I t-t-told you w-why." Snape sneered and dragged Quirrell with him to where the other Professors were located. They arrived right at the moment when Professor McGonagall was standing at the head of an unconscious troll in the girl's lavatory. As Granger explained the details on how she had gone after the troll, Snape caught Potter looking at the bloody gash at his leg. Pulling his cloak around his wound and turning his attention back to Ms. Granger, Snape pretended not to sense the suspicion in Potter's eyes, his own eyes glaring at Quirrell who ushered the students out of the room, "C-Come now, before it wakes up." Snape quickly limped to his bed chamber, treating his wounds with a potion, but still would take time to heal properly. The ache in his leg made it intolerable for sleep, but as hours passed by and the effects taking effect, Snape dozed off.
The next morning was a bit of trouble getting up for the potions master. Though the potion had dulled the pain, it had a groggy effect to Snape's morning. Potions class luckily didn't need much for functioning, it was mid-exams, and then was the Quidditch match, Slytherin, versus Gryffindor.
