“Lauren, stand still for just a minute!” my mom sighed, exasperated already at my lack of patience.
I begrudgingly stood perfectly still as the final measurements were taken.
“That should do it,” the seamstress said.
“Thank God!” I exclaimed.
Mom shot me a look but I simply smiled and shrugged at her as I practically ran out of the little, cramped shop.
Sure, it was an honor to be in my big brother, Mason’s wedding, especially to be Maid of Honor when I was only fourteen, but the dress fittings, I hated them. Mason was marrying Bella, my role model. She was beautiful and smart and her and Mason had the perfect love story, I hoped I would have one just like it someday.
Bella was shy and as a result, I think I was her best friend, aside from Mason, even though I was only fourteen and she was almost nineteen. I felt privileged to go places with her, it was really cool.
As I got in the passenger seat of our car and rolled down my window to embrace the cool, spring day, I thought about the wedding, it seems that was all everyone was thinking about; as it was only a week away, but I was thinking about it in a different way I’m sure.
I was thinking about how because Bella’s parents had more money than pretty much everyone in town, the wedding would be huge. Bella had gotten it the way she wanted it; simple and elegant I’m sure, but the guest list was in her mother’s hands and as a result everyone was invited.
Everyone. But the only person I cared about was Jayson.
I had asked him if he would be there and he promised he would, he said that the wedding had been the biggest talk of the town for a year now and he wouldn’t miss it for the world.
So this made me nervous, would I look alright? Would my speech be good? Would he dance with me? Did he even like me like that?
These questions ran through my head as the trees swirled by. Mom was on the phone again, I heard her discussing flower arrangements. I tuned her out and closed my eyes for a short nap.
The days flew by; and now, two days before the wedding, Bella was at my doorstep.
“Lauren, I know it’s not planned, but I wanted to take you out for lunch, is that alright?”
I didn’t hesitate, “Yes!”
I ran out the door in my soccer sweatshirt and jean shorts. My black flip flops hit the gravel with little ‘thumps.’ Bella drove us to Simon’s Cafand we ordered chocolate shakes.
“So, I can’t believe we are going to be sisters now!” I said excitedly.
She smiled and nodded in agreement. I wanted to talk about her, but she wanted to get the spotlight off of her.
“Lauren is Jayson coming to the wedding?” she asked.
I smiled and stirred my shake, “He says he is,”
“That’s good; I want to meet him,”
I giggled, of course she did, Bella was already like a sister to me, protective and all.
Just like that we fell into place; our words were like a perfect harmony; always starting when the other one stopped and flowing perfectly. Bella was the easiest person in the world to talk to. I loved her for it.
