Chapter 22

Sarah slept over that night and Chris came over in the morning and stayed with us for a while. It took a lot of effort to convince the couple to go and leave me so they wouldn’t waste their weekend. It was a very uneventful weekend; I stayed at home watching TV and ate who knows how many pints of ice cream. I switched my phone off after Sarah left and told her I needed some peace and quiet. I was thankful no one knocked my door all weekend.

Monday I went to work feeling better, though slightly intoxicated by the amount of ice cream I consumed the previous couple of days. I went to Starbucks as usual to get the coffee and then walked to the office. The closer I got to the building, the more anxious I felt; Hayden may have been nice to me on Friday when he found out who I really am but I don’t know how he’ll treat me today.

As I knocked on the door to Hayden’s office like I did every morning we had work I felt my heart beats go crazy with both the anxiety of not knowing what Hayden will be like and the excitement of seeing him again. I waited patiently in front of the door till he told me to come in, I opened the door with a somewhat shaky hand, what the hell? I don’t think I was ever nervous enough for my hands shake before.

“Good morning.” I said, my smile was a bit forced as I was still worried what he’ll be like.

All my fears went away when Hayden looked up at me in his usual manner and said, “Good morning.” And gave me a small smile I got used to getting after he greeted me in the morning the last few days. “How are you today?” he asked politely.

“I’m ok, I guess.” I looked down avoiding eye contact.

He nodded and then gave me a look I didn’t really understand but probably had to do with him feeling sorry for me. After a second of weird silence, I felt he wanted to say something but I’m not sure, he reached for some papers on his desk, “As you know we’re leaving this weekend to go for the press conference, you have to start reaching the three companies that are holding the conference.”

“Sure, do I start now?” I asked confused, we had almost a week before the conference and he wanted me to start researching now?

“Yes.” He said looking irritated as usual when I asked a question he thought was stupid. Although I hated it when he gave me that look in general, but today I was actually happy to see it. When I was worried about how Hayden would treat me today, I was worried that he would treat me worse than before. But I was more worried he’d treat me better now only because he knows who my grandfather is.

“Today all you have to do is research the three companies and write some notes down of any important information. Tomorrow we’ll discuss this and prepare the questions.” Recently I have been mainly working with Amanda, and I spent very limited time working with Hayden. So when he said that I felt my heart beat faster at I thought of us working together tomorrow.

I nodded as I spoke, “Ok, I’ll start right away.” I was about to start leaving when he spoke again.

“So the arrangements for the trip are finished?” he asked.

“Yes, from last week. I booked the plane tickets, including one for Nicole. I received confirmation emails from the hotel for the booking of the rooms and also arranged with them to send us a car to pick us up from the airport to the hotel.” I said smiling as I finished, I wasn’t waiting to be thanked because I knew Hayden wasn’t going to. But I wanted to make him realise that I am really good at the job, and that he needs me there and could depend on me. And in some sort of twisted way it wasn’t because he was my boss, but it’s because he’s Hayden the guy I’m crushing on like no other guy before.

He nodded, “Ok then, you should start with your research.”

“Ok.” I left his office and went to my desk. Sally was already at hers getting out files from her drawers but Amanda wasn’t on her desk.

“Hey!” I said when I sat on my desk.

“Hey!” Sally said back as she turned around to look at me.

“Where’s Amanda?”

“She’s taking the day off, she’s not feeling well.”

“Oh, I didn’t know. I’ll call her in a while; she might still be sleeping now.” I said concerned and I could see Sally was too.

“I was thinking of going over to her place after work for a while.”

“That’s a better idea, can I come with you?” I asked.

“Of course.”

The rest of the day went by quickly as I finished reading about the companies and once in a while day dreaming about Hayden. The three companies holding the conference all had almost the exact same story. They were multinational corporations that lost greatly after the financial crisis. Their share prices where skyrocketing right before the crisis and then when down to lower than one hundredth of that price after it.

Their CEOs were forced to hold the conference to communicate to the public their future plans. The wanted to try and convince them that they shouldn’t worry and that they will be able to increase profits in the future. But everyone knew that the main idea of the conference was a group of journalists invited from the top magazine to grill those CEOs because of the angry public.

After we finished work that day I collected my things and followed Sally to her car pretending I don’t have mine so she won’t see it. The car drive to Amanda’s wasn’t long since she lived close to work. Sally obviously knew well where she lived because she picked her up and dropped her off on her way every day.

We rang the bell to Amanda’s apartment and waited for her to answer. We’d called her to tell her we’re coming before we left the office so she was expecting us. About a minute later the door opened and a sick looking Amanda smiled warmly when she saw us, “Hey.” She said tiredly.

“Hey.” We said back concerned as we looked at her. She was wearing a house robe and holding a tissue box in her hand, her nose was red and so were her eyes.

“You look tired.” I said as she led us inside and Sally closed the door behind us.

“I know. I look awful.” Amanda said, “Do you guys mind if we sit in my room? I need to rest on the bed.”

“Sure.” Sally and I answered her quickly.

“So how was work today?” Amanda asked, her voice tired and different from her cold.

“It was ok, we missed you though.” I said and Sally nodded.

“I don’t think you’ve missed a day since I started working at the magazine till today.” Sally said. I could see that she and Amanda were closer to each than I thought they were. Sally looked very upset and concerned seeing Amanda like that.

We sat and chatted for about half an hour, letting Amanda on the few new office gossip. Sally was the one doing most of the talking since I didn’t know most of the people there. I never followed up with the gossip except what Amanda and Sally told me. Amanda seemed to look better after she’d laughed with us and I guess some of the medicines she took while we were there were starting to kick in.

“Oh this is Mark, one second I’ll answer him.” Sally said as she held her ringing phone, her finance’s name on the screen.

“Sure honey.” Amanda said as Sally walked out of the room to take the call. Amanda turned to me, “So how was your day? Anything upset you?” she asked.

“No, don’t worry.” I said. I wish I could tell Amanda how I felt about Hayden, she seemed to know him and is one of the few people he was himself around. But I knew I couldn’t, not when I was sure my feelings weren’t reciprocated.

“I’m glad to hear that.” Amanda said and turned around to look at Sally who was standing at the door to her room with an apologetic look on her face.

“I’m really sorry, I have to go. I totally forgot I that we’re going out today.” Sally said looking very guilty.

“It’s ok honey, you go have fun. Thanks for stopping by.” Amanda said smiling genuinely at her.

“Don’t thank me for that, I wanted to stay and maybe make you some soup or something.” Sally said.

“Don’t worry about it.”

“Do you want me to drop you home?” Sally asked looking at me.

“No, it’s ok I’m staying for a while.” I said smiling at Amanda, I wanted to stay with her for a while. I wasn’t going home anyways, I had to go back to the get my car where I parked it near work.

“Ok then, I’ll see you tomorrow.” Sally said looking at me, “And you please get better soon, I really miss you.” She said looking at sick Amanda. “Bye.” She said and started walking towards the door.

“Bye.” Amanda and I said back.

I turned back to face Amanda. “I can’t say I’ll make you soup unless you want to get food poisoning. We can order that.” I said making us both laugh.

“So you’re a good cook huh?” she said smiling as our laughter died down.

“The best!” I said, lifting my head as if with pride of an accomplishment, again making us both laugh. “So do you want me to go order that on the phone?” I asked.

“Sure, thanks.”

“Oh don’t be silly, you’ve done so much for me Am....” I was interrupted by the door bell.

“She must have forgotten something.” Amanda said shaking her head and smiling because Sally has a habit of forgetting her things.

“I’ll go open the door.” I said and got up. “I see you couldn’t stay away for long.” I said as I opened the door smiling, and froze in my place when I saw who I just said that to. I started blushing and I tried to find a way to explain my previous statement.

“Obviously that wasn’t meant for me.” Hayden said smirking. I shook my head vigorously that I was scared it would fall off. He held out a brown bag for me to take, I gave him a questioning look.

“What’s that?” I asked.

“Soup.” He said shaking his head probably because he thought it was an idiotic question, and I had to agree that it was. But I was so embarrassed by what I said my brain wasn’t working properly. “Can I come in?” he asked as I stood there just looking at him with is hand still holding out the soup for me.

“Oh sure, sorry.” I said as I took the soup and stepped out of the way for him to get in.

I led him to Amanda’s room, she sat up in bed as he went to her and kissed her cheek. I think my mouth dropped to the floor. I saw him ask her if she was ok she nodded and he sat on the edge of the bed.

“I got you soup.” He said and looked at me I was standing by the bedroom door.

“Yeah.” I said walking towards them holding the soup.

“Thanks!” Amanda said looking at Hayden. “Scarlet was about to order some for me.” Amanda said smiling, Hayden looked at me with an expression I didn’t understand.

“Do you want to have it now?” I asked Amanda.

“Sure.”

I started to get the container of soup out of the bag. I was struggling to hold the brown bag and get out the soup without tilting the container and spilling it. I was so concentrated on what I was doing when I felt a hand on mine and the brown bag being pulled away. I looked up at Hayden who was looking at what he was doing. It felt like my heart leapt out of my chest with the way it was pounding.

When the soup container was free of the brown bag he looked up meeting my eyes. “I didn’t want you having a soup shower, besidesI thinkAmanda needs it more.” Hayden said smirking and I could hear Amanda laughing in the background I started to laugh too.

I walked towards the bed as I took off the lid and handed Amanda the soup, my heart beats still not back to normal. Hayden’s arm came around me from behind and gave her the plastic spoon. Although he made sure he didn’t touch me, but it was torture being so close to him and not being able to touch him.

“Do you need any help?” Hayden asked Amanda as she was trying to sit up further so she could drink her soup.

“I’m sick not disabled Hayden.” She said chuckling.

We sat watching Amanda drink her soup, “I don’t think I can come tomorrow.” she said.

“It’s ok, take as much time off as you need.” Hayden said smiling warmly at Amanda. If I didn’t know better I would have really thought she was his mum or something.

“Are you leaving this weekend for the conference right?” Amanda asked.

“Yes.”

“And Scarlet you’re going with Hayden?” Amanda asked with a sparkle in her eyes that hadn’t been there before, making her eyes look less tired than before.

I nodded looked at Hayden and nodded, “Yes.”

A couple of minutes later Amanda finished her soup. “You should rest.” I said getting up, “I’ll come by tomorrow to check up on you ok.”

“Thanks for coming today, both of you.” She said looking at me and Hayden, “Scarlet you came with Sally right.”

“Yeah.” I said, knowing well she knew the answer to her question.

“Hayden, would you drop her home on your way, it’s getting late?” Amanda asked. My eyes widened at Amanda request and gave her a questioning look.

Hayden looked at me, “Sure.”

“It’s ok, I can take a cab.” I said.

“No, it’s fine.”

“Ok kids now go, I need to sleep.” She said laughing.

“Ok, sleep well.” Hayden said kissing her forehead, “Call me if you need anything.” He started walking towards the door.

“Feel better. I’ll come by tomorrow.” I said hugging her in bed, “Why did you tell him to take me home Amanda?” I asked whispering after I made sure he was out of the room.

“Like I said, it’s getting late, and it’s not safe for a beautiful young girl like you.”

“It’s 6:30” I said, it wasn’t even dark yet.

“I know.” Amanda said, again her eyes sparkling.

“James, I’m getting old.” I heard Hayden call from outside.

“You go now.” she said and winked.

“Bye.” I said, not having time to think about what Amanda meant by that wink.

“Bye.” I walked out of the room and mumbled an apology to Hayden who was standing by the door impatiently. We walked out of the building, as usual Hayden was in front of me.

“I really don’t mind taking a cab, it’s not that late.” I said to Hayden as we got to his car.

“It’s ok, you live like what ten minutes from here. Plus I told Amanda I’d take you home.” He said. So what if he did? Why did it matter to him what he promised Amanda? This is so weird.

“Oh shit, I forgot, I left my car at work when I came with Sally.” I didn’t need to explain why I did that because I knew Hayden understood.

“It’s ok I’ll take you back to the office, it’s even closer.” He said, “Come on, it’s a five minute drive.” He said nodding towards the car encouragingly.

“Thanks.”

“It’s ok.”

We both got into the car and he drove off. He glanced towards me with the same weird expression he did when we were at Amanda’s place. I wonder what it means.... I wanted to ask him, but didn’t know how. Besides I might not like the answer, it felt too good sitting so close to Hayden, I didn’t want to spoil this moment.

“Do you want me to switch on the radio?” he asked.

“Yeah sure.” I said, grinning like a kid asked if he wanted to go to the candy shop. It’s just tuning on the radio for God’s sake!

He turned on the radio, “I didn’t know you were close to Amanda.” He said after tuned to a good channel, we were almost there by that time.

“Yeah, she’s great, I love her. And so is Sally.” I said smiling, it was ridiculous how happy I was just because we were having a normal conversation about a work colleague.

“Yeah she is.” Was all he said but then he gave me that same look for the third time that day and I was dying to know what it meant..........
