Chapter 23

Hayden dropped me near work where I parked my car, I took it and drove back home. The next day I went was feeling cheerful and giddy, I was almost running from Starbucks to the magazine to get to Hayden’s office and see him. A day of work with Hayden was making me feel so happy it was ridiculous. I knocked the door to his office and went in after he told me to. “Good morning!” I said cheerfully.

“Good morning.” Hayden said, looking up from the papers on his desk.

“So I got my notes from the research yesterday.” I said walking over next to him to lay the coffee and the papers on his desk.

“Good, let’s see what we have.” Hayden gave me genuine smile showing his approval, making me smile like I just won the lottery. After I put the papers down, I went to the next office to get the chair from there.

I sat next to Hayden as he started reading the papers, I saw he was already reading about the companies online before I came. Hayden started discussing with me what I found out about the companies, reading stuff off their web pages, and explaining their methods of promoting their companies. He pointed out the organizations weaknesses and strengths, and what type of questions would embarrass them. He started telling me what we should ask, how and why. I listened to him intently trying to remember every word he said. I was mesmerised by his understanding of our profession.

Hayden looked so tempting as he talked and wrote things down. Slowly my concentration started slipping and I had to force my thoughts away from how good it would feel to be in his arms and actually listen to what he was saying. I kept looking at his lips as he talked, I just couldn’t help it, and kept imagining kissing those soft looking lips. I forced myself to look up but looking at his eyes didn’t really help the least bit. He green eyes looked so beautiful, with golden flecks around the pupils, I felt like I could stare at them forever and never get tired. Oh God I was sounding like I’m in one of those terrible soap operas.

“So do you want to go to lunch and we’ll finish when you get back?” Hayden asked after a few hours of working when it was lunch time.

“Yeah, sure.” I said, and then paused before continuing. “Do you want me to get you anything with me?” I asked.

“No thanks. I’ll order something by the phone.” He said, my heart sank a bit with his rejection. I mean yeah I know it was just bringing him lunch, not a big deal, but it still hurt.

“Oh well, I’ll see you in a while.” I said disheartened.

“Half an hour, don’t be late.” He said in this tone that sounded serious but I knew he was teasing me.

“I’ll try.” I said, feeling a bit better.

I walked out of his office to Sally’s desk, “So let’s go to lunch?” I asked.

“Sure, how much time do we have?” She asked looking at Hayden’s office.

“Half an hour.”

“Ooh a whole thirty minutes!” She teased as we headed out of the building to go get lunch. Though Sally is a very nice person Hayden wasn’t particularly her favourite person in the world. We were back at the office exactly 34 minutes later, meaning I was 4 minutes late. I walked as fast as I could to Hayden’s office hoping he’d let it slide this time.

“You’re 5 minutes late.” He said as soon as I got into the office. Of course he wouldn’t let it go, some things never change.

“Sorry.” I mumbled as I went to sit again next to him.

The rest of the day went well, considering I was constantly drifting into my dream world. I left the office that day with a smile on my face that I couldn’t get rid of, not that I wanted to anyways. I got out my phone to call Amanda and tell her that I was stopping by, but her daughter picked up the phone as she was visiting and told me Amanda was resting at the time. So I just went back home.

Friday came by quickly and I realised that it was only two days away that I will be with Hayden on a plane going to London for the conference. I know it was only for work, but for some odd reason I felt excited about it, seriously DON’T ask! The last three days went by pretty fast since work wasn’t that eventful. I was mainly researching about different topics Hayden was thinking about writing articles about. I didn’t work with him those days that much. Amanda is supposed to come back today. I hadn’t seen her ever since Monday, but called her everyday and made sure she was ok.

I went to Hayden’s office with his coffee and he told me that I would be helping Amanda out. I left his office and my smiled seeing Sally settling into her desk, and Amanda with her. I realised how much it felt like something was missing in the office when Amanda wasn’t there. I went towards them and hugged Amanda tightly. I could see both of them surprised with what I was doing, but they started laughing and I joined in.

“I guess you missed me.” Amanda said as I let go of her.

“Yeah, I guess so.” I said cheerfully, happy she’s back not caring that it looked a bit weird.

“Thanks. I missed you too.” Amanda said with a smile, I could see she was touched by my gesture.

“I’m helping you out today.” I said.

“Great.” Amanda said with a smile, “I’ll go say hi to Hayden and come back.” She started walking towards his office. I greeted Sally and I sat on my desk chatting with her for a couple of minutes when Amanda came back smiling, “Let’s start working, I have a ton of things to do today.” She said making a face that made us laugh.

We started working immediately and she wasn’t kidding, there was a lot of work to be done since she was absent for a few days. Sally got up to do something with another department, and as soon as she got up Amanda said, “So excited about leaving on Sunday?”

“Well yeah I guess. It’s going to be a great opportunity to learn.”

“And that’s the only reason you’re excited?” Amanda asked, her eyes having that same mischievous look in them as Monday. I gave her a questioning look, but I guess it wasn’t that convincing because next thing I know Amanda is saying, “You like him don’t you?” It sounded more of a statement than a question.

“What? Who?” I asked, busted!

“Hayden.” She said with a knowing smile.

“Amanda what are you talking about? I hate him, you know that.” I said denying it, but my voice betrayed me terribly.

“Yeah, you used to. But not lately, I see the way you look at him.” She said, I opened my mouth to say something when she patted my back, “Don’t worry, I won’t tell anyone. I just want to help you.”

“Help me with what?” I asked confused.

“Help you get him.” She said and winked laughing at my shocked expression.

“Amanda! I don’t know what you’re talking about.” I said trying to play it cool, but we both knew I was lying.

“Yeah right, you don’t.” She said, laughing even more making me crack a smile.

“But he doesn’t like me back.” I said. I knew no use denying it; she already knew.

“You don’t know that, you have to try before you give up. God knows he needs a girl like you.” She said, and was so sure of what she was saying, making me wonder more about their weird relationship.

“What do you mean a girl like me?” I asked, fearing the answer.

“I meant a nice girl, he hasn’t had a serious relationship in a very long time.” I remembered what Patrick said about Hayden having many one night stands. I felt a bit down listening to this, it seemed like he wasn’t interested in having a relationship at the moment. Before we could say more Sally was back with her cheerful smile and we went back to work. The rest of the day went by quickly as we worked as fast as we could to be able to finish as much of what Amanda left behind when she was off.

That night I went to sleep thinking about Hayden and what Amanda said about him. The more I thought about it the more upset I got thinking about how hopeless it was. I ended up even dreaming about him, that’s when I realised I was really in deep trouble.

Saturday went by slowly, probably because I couldn’t wait for Sunday to come by. I went over to Sarah’s place to finish stuff for the wedding. I had to work extra since I was skipping two days for the trip. I got there and after I greeted the happy couple the phone was almost stuck to my ear for the next few hours. After about a hundred phone calls I felt my head go a little dizzy, so I thought I’d take a break and go get something to drink. I heard my phone ring as I was opening my can of soda making me groan. I went to pick it up and I felt my heart beat faster when Hayden’s name appeared on the screen.

Me* Hello.

I answered my voice a bit more excited than it should be.

Hayden* Hello, James?

Urgh! Why does he have to call me by my last name?!

Me* Yes. How are you?

Hayden* I’m fine, thanks. How are you?

Me* I’m good thanks for asking.

Hayden* Sorry to bother you, but I just wanted to tell you that we’re meeting at the airport tomorrow night at eight sharp.

Me* Ok, will be there.

Hayden* Ok, see you then.

Me* See you, bye.

Hayden* Bye.

I shut the phone feeling energized again, and thoughts of seeing Hayden tomorrow and going away was making me cheerful. I went and finished my drink, then got back to making those phone calls. After we finished we watched a movie and ordered pizza, I had to leave to go back home and pack my bags. It was for a day only so I didn’t have much to pack, but wanted to be ready.

On Sunday I left my apartment at 7:30 exactly to make sure I was at the airport just on time. I got there and parked my car and then went inside the airport it was 8:02. I looked around and spotted Hayden standing alone looking at his watch and mumbling something to himself, probably cursing. I walked over to him, my smile was so wide it almost hurt. “Hi.” I said to when I got to him.

“Hi.” He was about to say something but I beat him to it.

“Before you say it, I know I’m....” I looked at my watch, “3 minutes late.” I said and smiled, he smiled too.

“Actually I was going to say that Eric and Nicole will be here any minute.” He said smirking. And he was right, about a couple of minutes later Eric and Nicole were standing by our sides.

“Hey! Sorry we’re late.” Eric said smiling and next to him was Nicole who was also smiling brightly.

“Hi. It’s ok.” I said, and smiled back. “It’s nice to see you again.” I said to Nicole, looking towards her.

Her smile widened, “Like wise.”

“Let’s go, we’ll be late.” Hayden said.

“Relax my dear brother.” Nicole said to Hayden teasing him, and putting an arm around his shoulder.

We went through all the procedures and went to the gate to wait for our plane. By the time only 30 minutes were left before boarding. Hayden and Eric got up to get us all coffee and left me and Nicole together. “So how is Daisy?” I asked.

“Oh she’s fine, we were late because of her actually. Apparently you made such an impression on her though.”

“Oh, that’s good to hear. She’s very sweet, bless her.” I said smiling.

“Thanks. So are you liking your job so far?” Nicole asked.

“Yeah, it’s good. I’m learning a lot from it.”

“Hayden is pretty good at what he does. But I guess not the most lenient boss.” She said, and I saw some sort of sadness on her face as she said the last part. Before I could respond the guys were back with the coffee, they sat with us and we started discussing the next day’s conference. Nicole went to make a call so she could check up on Daisy who was staying with Eric’s parents.

Finally we boarded the plane, Eric and Nicole in front of me and Hayden. We sat in silence as all the people got into the plane, the doors were closed, the safety instructions were read and the plane took off. I could hear Eric and Nicole talking and giggling in front of us, we both looked at them and then each other. Hayden leaned in and whispered, “They don’t get that much time alone because of Daisy, so they make the most of it.”

I smile at him and we both looked in front of us to see them making out passionately. Instantly we both looked away, I blushed and I could see Hayden was a little flushed too. We went silent again not knowing what to say. Hayden took out a book from his handbag and started to read it, while I watched the movie being played on board.

Throughout the flight, we didn’t talk except a few words. After the plane landed and we got through customs and out of the airport to find a car waiting for us to take us to the hotel. We all got into the car and Nicole started telling us about the time she lived in London as she attended art school there for a year.

We got to the hotel in a few minutes, and it was chaos. Bus after bus of people checking in at the hotel arrived. The hotel lobby was packed with people and the noise around us was so loud we had to talk louder to hear each other. We walked towards the reception and stood close by waiting for our turn. After over half an hour of waiting it was our turn.

Since I was in charge of the arrangements I went to get us checked in. I gave the receptionist our names, and started typing on her computer. She looked up with a weird expression and said, “There seems to be a mistake, your booking is two double rooms.”

“What? No it’s one double room and two single rooms.” I said patiently wanting to go to our rooms, I was starting to get a headache from all the noise around us.

“Sorry that’s not what the computer says.” The receptionist said looking pissed off, and I could hear someone standing next to me arguing about their booking too.

Hayden came towards me as he saw I was starting to get angry, “What’s wrong?”

“They messed up our booking.” I said annoyed, and explained.

“Ok, let Eric and Nicole check in and we’ll sort out our rooms after that. I know Eric planned a special night for them, I’d hate it if it got spoiled.” I nodded and we let them check in and take their bags to their room.

After they were gone I turned to look at the receptionist with a deadly expression. Hayden and I tried in every way to get the right rooms it was impossible, we got to understand that we weren’t the only ones with that problem. Almost all those attending the conference the next day decided to stay at the hotel like we did and it was a mess. All rooms were booked, and the nearest hotel from this one was miles away.

“It’s ok James, we’ll just share the room. We’ll work it out, we’re both tired and we need to be up early tomorrow.”

I nodded, knowing that there is nothing more we can do. I picked my bag and followed Hayden who headed towards the elevator with the key to the room. I remembered what I packed in the bags to wear while sleeping tonight, and blushed. Oh my....... Hayden’s going to see me in that!
