Alec looked down to Jade in question. What was he doing with her? Where were they? When he looked around, he realized that he was sitting outside by the pool where both of their families had been on vacation. He didn't know Jade though. She was always hiding from everything. Her pitch black hair and misty green eyes were a mystery to everybody. She never opened up to anyone, so there was no explanation. Alec looked down at her; she was sound asleep, and Alec didn't have the heart to wake her up. He began to stroke her hair and her face thinking it would be harmless. He didn't know. He's a genuinely good guy though he's a star swimmer at their high school. He'd never spent a night with a girl, and he had no idea how this had happened.
Jade stirred and began to sit up clutching her head. She looked up at Alec then to their surroundings. Alec had never heard Jade speak because she always hid in the back of classrooms, and since she's so petite she was never called on. He'd never seen her with friends and definitely not talking to them. She had a calm look on her face as if she knew exactly what had been going on. She moved quickly removing the blanket, revealing her bathing suit, grasping her shoes and wrap, and walking out. Alec was stunned. He couldn't move, and he didn't want to. Not until he found out what could have possibly happened last night. He saw though that she had dropped a brown leather book. It looked old and tattered. Could this be the answer to the mystery?
Jade walked back to her family's condo. She couldn't stop thinking about Alec; he looked so confused. Clearly he didn't remember what had happened, but Jade thought that it would be better if he didn't know. She needed to get into the condo where she was safe. She had taken off running in a panic because she felt like she was being followed. It couldn't be Alec; she had left him stunned, unless he was that desperate for the truth.
When she exploded through the door, she expected her family to attack her and demand to know where she was. Her mother was always concerned even when she didn't need to be. Her little brother would just nag her about something dumb, but her dad would go crazy because he didn't think that she should have any form of life. Instead of a full on attack from her family, she found a folded piece of paper with her name and a flower drawn on it. She unfolded it carefully and read: Jade, your father and I are taking Jake to the zoo for an over night safari adventure. We should be back around ten. I know you said you were at the pool, so I didn't try your cell. Give me a call when you can. ~Mom
Jade looked around for a clock and found that it was 9:23, so she called her mother. She picked up after a few rings.
\"Hello?\" She said sounding exhausted.
\"Mom?\" Jade asked quietly.
\"Oh, hello sweetheart.\"
\"Hey, are you on your way back?\"
\"Not exactly. We had a slight issue.\" Her voice was strained it sounded like she hadn't slept. Jade was nervous now, but she knew she had to ask.
\"What kind of an issue?\" Her breath staggered. She had no idea what to prepare herself for, no idea what to expect. She waited to hear flat tire, car wreck, or even some kind of poison from a bite. She didn't expect what she was about to hear though.
\"Your brother snuck out of the tent in the middle of the night, and he got mauled by a tiger.\" Jade's mother spoke through tears. Jade felt like the world was crumbling around her. She had to grasp the counter because her legs would no longer support her.
\"Where are you?! Where is he?! How is he?!\" She babbled no even conscious of what she was saying. She had no idea how to process this, and she was still trying to figure out what had happened with Alec.
\"Jade!\" Her mom stopped her. \"We're at the hospital that's just around the corner from the resort.\"
\"I'm on my way, mom.\" Jade hung up the phone. She pulled on the first pair of jeans and top that she could find. Her bathing suit was still kind of damp, and it showed slightly through her clothes. She was out the door almost instantaneously after grabbing her bag and keys. She was running as fast as she could until she was met by a crowd in the lobby of the resort. She tried to dodge people, but somebody blocked her way.
The next thing she knew Alec was staring down at her as if he was expecting something.
