It skidded.

I heard it.

He screamed.

I screamed.

My heart leapt from my fragile body and shattered on the concrete floor.

Headlights filled the gaps amongst the mass of shadows, whilst illuminating segments of the white lines between the tyres. Half blinded by my damp hair, I ran as fast as my lanky legs could take me. The rain felt like pebbles were being thrown at my face. I rubbed the black make up from my eyes. But it didn’t matter. How the man across the car park saw me didn’t matter.

I threw my knees to the floor to accompany the silent brother I was not familiar with. I could barely see his bright blue eyes as they drooped, half open then closing momentarily. I grasped his hand, pleading, “Hold on Gray, hold on. Please.”
I turned around to headlights beaming in my eyes, and the car disappeared into the storm.

The world stopped. I touched his now cold, soft cheeks. Crowds of people surged around us; I heard buttons on phones beep, calling 999. Yet some just watched – watched my world fall to pieces.
