Chapter 1: Paranoid

I am walking down the dark alley way, my hair wiping around my face. My cheeks are flushed from the cold but I feel warm inside my winter clothes. My usually small, skinny body feels like a marshmallow. My mom said that I'm crazy for going on a run in the middle of night during winter. Actually, she begged me to stay home, saying that it is too dangerous. I convinced her that it is fine. I've go running every night and nothing has ever happened before. Why would something today?

I run a gloved hand through my thick, brown hair. My blue eyes flick around me, double checking my surroundings. Was that footsteps that I just heard? Relax Bella, you are just being paranoid. You are all alone. I jump as everything goes pitch black. I look above me and cuss under my breath. The lampost above me is no longer giving off it's dim glow. Now, I'm surrounded by blackness. I close my eyes and then open them quickly, trying to get them used to the darkness. I stand still for a few seconds before my eyes are adjusted enough that I can see the basic outline of things. I glance up at the grafitti covered brick walls on my left and right. They are covered with gang names and warnings. I glance at the newest one. It is longer than most of them. I take a step closer to make out the letters and words. I read it out loud quietly to myself.

"Beware! You are not alone! If you treasure your live, go home! Men dressed in black have been spotted in this exact spot that you are standing to read this warning. If you are smart, you'll stop reading and run! Now go!" I chuckly quietly to myself. This gang stuff is so dumb! Each gang is always trying to convinve another one to be afraid and that they will kill them if they don't stay off their territory. They are as protective of their alleys as male dogs are protective of their lawn and owners.

I picture some kid reading this and running home crying and telling their mommy to call the cops. Of course, the cops wouldn't pay much attention once the mom explained. After all, this is New York City and gangs are nothing new. Sure the cops don't like the gangs more than anyone else but they've learned that most gangs aren't around enough to do anything about trespassers. Most of the time they are off dealing drugs or robbing the local gas station. They'd rather be out in town causing trouble where they are less likely to get caught. The cops would prbobably just tell the mom that her kid shouldn't be going into alleys and to keep a better eye on them.

I just shake my head. All this stuff is just so annoying! People are too paranoid in my mind. Sure, I'm careful when I'm alone but I don't spend every moment thinking about what could happen. I mean, you can't spend life worrying all the time.

Suddenly, a shadow dances in front of me. I jump and spin around. I back up against the wall, protecting my back. I quickly glance around but I'm alone. Of course, right as I'm thinking about being paranoid I get paranoid. I probably just scared myself. I laugh at myself and my silly brain.

I stop mid laugh though. Another shadow just flashed across from me. Okay, is this real or am I imagining it. I quickly pinch my arm. Ouch! Yep, I'm awake. Another shape moves. Okay, I swear I didn't imagine that!

I glance up at the lampost again. Nope, still out. How is a shadow being cast then? I look around myself. Nope, no light coming from anywhere.

Suddenly, Iget a feeling that I'm not alone and I'm being watched. I don't know if I am imagining everything but I can't ignore my gut. I slowly creep down the wall to the entrance of the alley. I keep my eyes wide open and searching any sigh of movement. Another shadow appears, but this time it appears to be coming to towards me. I freeze and look towards the direction it is being cast. Nope, nothing. My breathing has sped up and I'm starting to shake. I know it's not from the cold because I'm wearing enough layers that nothing can sweep through. The shadow disappears and Istart moving again.

The strange feeling is getting stronger. I dare to close my eyes for a minute to try to calm myself. If I'm scared I won't be able to fully concentrate on my surroundings and any change. I quickly open them. Isream the second I do and feel like closing them again but can't make myself.

There right in front of me, is a large black figure. It is blocking my path. Great! Now I'm trapped! I consider how far I'd have to run and how fast the figure looks. Even if I could outrun it, there is no way I would be able to edge around it without it grabbing onto me. It flashes a smile at me, causing me to scream again. It laughs a deep, evil laugh. So it's a man. I look at his muscles moving below his black clothing. He doesn't look fast but Iknow that he is strong.

The man takes a step towards me and I take a step back instinktively. What am I doing?!? I'm just trapping myself more! He smirks at me again.

"Well, what do we have here? Why is such a pretty girl like you out alone at night? Surely your mom wouldn't approve of this. Why aren't you out partying with your boyfriend like most teenagers are on a Friday night?" he questions. His harsh voice scares me to death.

I try and think back to all my years in elementary school learning what to do if you ever met a stranger. First, scream. Well, I already tried that and that didn't work. Second, run. Hmm, thought about it but there's no way I can get around him. Third, threaten. That might work.

"Actually, my boyfriend and I are on our way to a party right now. He's meeting me here any second. His dad is a cop and he had to check something on a way. He'll arrest you when he gets here but I'm sure he'll let his son beat you up first," Istutter. That doesn't sound very convinsing! Lie better! Why couldn't Ibe born a good liar?

The man laughs and takes another step towards me. "You don't sound very confident," he teases.

Okay, threatening is out of the plan. Forth, fight. Well, I've never been in a fight and I'm not very aggressive but then again, I've never been in this situation before. Okay, I'll fight if he grabs me.

It only takes me a second to come up with a plan. Okay, let's do this!
