Chapter Six

Today was the worse day for me. I was late for school because I was trying to get my hair to have a curly texture. I just wanted a different look. So I permed my hair and it didn’t turn out the way I expected. So I tried flattening my hair but my flat iron blew out. So I had to go to school looking like carrot top.

“Whoa!” Lydia yelped when she saw me.

I groaned. “I’m having a bad hair day.”

“I can see that. What happened?”

“My flat iron caught a fuse.” I droned.

“Well you better wear this because people are staring at you.” I looked around to see a few people gawking at me like I was the Second Coming. No pun intended. Lydia took off the black beanie she had been wearing and handed it to me.

I took the beanie, pinned my hair into it and put it on. “How’s that?”

“Passable at least. Gosh what made you even decide to come out looking like the bride of Frankenstein?” Lydia asked. Lydia was a very blunt person and didn’t hold back on anything. That’s what I loved about her the most.

I said sarcastically. “Really? Because I thought I was bringing sexy back.”

She laughed, “More like what the hell back.”

We walked to AP English, which was the highlight of my day for I loved English. Mr. Lintwich, our English teacher was a cool young teacher who used different methods to teach. Instead of the usual boring lectures, he actually asks us to come up and teach on what we’ve learned outside the class or from what we’ve read from whatever selection he gives us. He also treats us like equals and he doesn’t sugarcoat anything.

Today was a free day where we just watched a movie. We had free days every other Monday because he understood that Mondays was the worst day out of the whole week and nobody really liked to start the week bored to death. So he started doing Merrymaking Mondays.

“Later this week we will be focusing on the id, ego, and superego in the book, Still Alice. In celebration of that, we will kick off the week with a movie on the alter ego. You have a choice between, Spiderman, Superman, Avatar, or Ironman 2.” He held out the movies and people instantly started debating on which movie to watch.

I really didn’t care because I had seen all of them and thought they were pretty good movies. However, I was on the fence about watching Avatar again. Avatar was a one watch kind of movie but it wouldn’t be as bad as watching Twilight or New Moon over again.

Luckily, the majority wanted to watch Spiderman. I never got tired of watching that movie and hearing Chad Kroeger’s voice at the end of the movie. His voice just brought chills through me.

“Oh fuck yeah! I love me some Tobey McGuire and James Franco!” Lydia squealed at me in excitement.

I just shook my head in amusement. Mr. Lintwich turned off the lights and began the movie. As the first lines began, I smiled. I loved the opening. It was so memorable.

I thought that this movie would distract my thoughts of Jake for a little bit but it seemed to only fuel it more especially as I watched the scenes between Peter and Mary Jane. Jake had told me one time that Spiderman was his favorite movie. We actually watched it one night in his hotel room.

“Who would you rather be, Peter or Harry?” I asked him. I was locked in his arms and had my head on his chest. He stroked through my hair.

“Neither. I would want to be Green Goblin.”

I looked up at him in shock. I stated, “He’s evil and he dies at the end.”

“Yeah but he has some kickass stunt scenes.”

“You’re such a guy.” I rolled my eyes.

“Who would you be…oh wait Mary Jane right?”

“Well it sure wouldn’t be Ant May.”

“You’re such a girl.” He mocked and I punched him lightly in the arm. We continued watching the movie laughing.

I was glad when the bell finally ringed about half way through the movie and Mr. Lintwich yelped, “Alright class we’ll finish the movie next Monday. Remember to bring your books to class tomorrow.”

I quickly picked up my books and walked out the door. Lydia followed and asked suddenly, “Are you okay?”

“Yeah why wouldn’t I be?”

“Well for starters you were drunk at that party Saturday and you don’t drink at least not before this summer. You danced and flirted with Spencer Cunnington who you claim you are not interested in and made out with someone else’s boyfriend. So to make things pretty clear, you’ve been acting really funny lately. Why won’t you tell me what’s been going on with you?”

“There’s nothing to tell Lydia. Tell the rest of the group to meet up tonight at the Café so we can practice.”

“Okay if you say so.” She said harshly, stalking off. I didn’t know what her problem was lately. I mean yes I was keeping a secret from her but if she was a true friend she would just back off and let me tell her in my own time.

I quickly walked into the bathroom and looked at myself in the mirror. I turned on the faucet and put water over my face. I don’t know how much more of this I can take. I thought getting drunk would make me feel better but it only made me feel worse and feel like an idiot. Probably half the school thought I was a slut after that party Saturday.

Suddenly Mackenzie Muller, came into the bathroom, glaring at me. Just my luck.

I started for the door but she pushed me back. “I just thought you should know that because of you, Jason and I are through. I thought you were nice and decent but I guess I was wrong and now, I’m going to make your life a living hell. Slut!”

She bumped my shoulder and scuffed at me. I quickly walked out of the bathroom and saw SLUT written across my locker. Great.

Thanksgiving was bittersweet for me. The sweet part was that I would be getting away from all the glares and name calling I got at school. Lydia, Alex, and Sydney tried to reassure me that soon it would go away when something worse happened to someone else but I hated being the odd girl out. At least before I was just a nobody.

Mackenzie made sure to go through with her promise. The next day of school there was cracked eggs in my locker and egg yolk was all over my books. At lunch she made sure to have her and her minions glare at me and laugh and whisper about me. But that was just the appetizer of what she did next.

After school, there was lipstick smeared all over my car and big red letters on the windshield that read: Whore!

That was it, I took it to the principal who said he couldn’t do anything unless I could get eye witnesses that Mackenzie had done it. There was no such luck there, so here I was at home, washing my car away, glad that it was Thanksgiving break. I didn’t tell my parents because then I would have to tell them about the party.

The bitter part of this break is that I had nothing to do besides work on music and think about Jake for Lydia was going to her grandmother’s for the break, Sydney was going to Australia with her parents, and Alex was also going out of town with her parents. So I was all alone with no distractions.

I decided to work at the Café for my mom, hoping that would distract me but she didn’t have that many customers. So I was off in Jake land for a while until someone finally came in. I was surprised to see it was Spencer.

He strode across the room and came up to me. “Hey can I have a non-fat latte?”

“Yeah coming right up.” I said and quickly got his latte. I handed it to him and he paid me for it.

He just stood there for a while as if I was supposed to say something else. “Is there something else you wanted?”

“Matter of fact there is. I want to know why you turned me down?”

Okay that was unexpected. I thought for a moment before answering, “Because I’m just not interested in anybody right now.”

“I don’t know if the stories are true but you can make out with me and apparently sleep with Jason Reed who’s like the biggest slut in school but you can’t go on one date with me?” He asked. I wanted to kill Mackenzie for spreading vicious rumors like that and Jason since he was letting her do it.

“I didn’t sleep with him and I was intoxicated.” I defended. I mean I felt guilty for making out with him but I was drunk and I had thought it was Jake. If I had been in my right mind, I never would have made out with either one of them.

“Okay but even so.”

I really didn’t want to go out with Spencer. He was cute but going out with me was just going to be a waste. But one date wouldn’t hurt and it would get my mind off of Jake. Finally I said with a groan, “Okay one date but this does not mean we’re an item or even going out. Its just one date! Got it!”

He shook his head with a smile. “Got it! So tonight at eight?”

“I can’t tonight. Thanksgiving dinner.”

He looked at me in confusion. “But its Wednesday.”

“We have a tradition where we eat Thanksgiving dinner the night before Thanksgiving so that dad can spend his whole day at the bar watching the game with his buds.”

“That’s weird.” He chuckled.

“That’s my dad for you.”

“Okay Friday night then.”

“And Jenna, I don’t believe the rumors for a minute. You’re a nice girl and Mackenzie is just a jealous bitch.”

“Thanks.” I said.

“Well see you Friday.” He started to walk out of the shop.

“Yeah see you then.” I waved. Maybe going out with him wouldn’t be so bad.

When I got home, mom was setting the table. She had the prettiest dress I had ever seen her wear. It was a light brown color, sleeveless and it stopped at her knees. Her hair was down and she had on drooping earrings. Mom hadn’t been this dressed up in a while. Something was definitely up.

“Mom why are you so dressed up and where’s dad?”

“Your father isn’t coming dear. He has to stay late again at the office but we have guests coming to eat with us.” She beamed and I suddenly noticed she set the table for four instead of three.

Suddenly the doorbell ringed and she looked up. “Oh that must be them.”

She went to the door and answered it. I turned around to see it was Eric Muller and Mackenzie Muller. When she saw me, she glared. Mom brought them in the dining room and said, “Jenna this is Eric Muller, a very good friend of mine who you’ve already met and his daughter, Mackenzie. She says you two know each other.”

“Yeah we know each other.” I said sourly.

“Hardly.” Mackenzie retorted snobbishly. This was going to be a long night.

It was beyond awkward the whole night. Mackenzie and I barely said a word the whole night unless Eric or mom asked us a question, which wasn’t a lot considering they were having their own conversation about real estate.

I was so glad when dessert came and I hurried up and ate it. When I was done, I got up from the table and said, “Well I’m going to my room now.”

“Why don’t you let Mackenzie go up with you.” Mom suggested. I scowled at her.

“I’m fine Mrs. Bell.” Mackenzie said.

“Nonsense, go up with her.” Mr. Muller replied.

Mackenzie looked just as peeved as I did but didn’t argue. She got up from the table and followed me up the stairs. We didn’t say anything going up and I went straight to my computer as she slammed my door shut.

I started playing a game of Spades and put on my ear buds, hoping she would get the hint that I didn’t want her up here. But she sat on my bed instead and looked through one of my magazines. Finally she looked up at me and replied, “I don’t like this anymore than you do and if you tell anyone about this I swear it will be the last thing you tell.”

“Believe me when I say that this will definitely not be mentioned to anyone at least not from me.”

“Ugh. I don’t know why out of all the moms my dad had to choose yours.”

“They’re just friends.”

She scowled, “Right and I’m Wonder woman. Don’t be naïve Jenna. Your mom is fucking my dad.”

I gasped, “No she’s not. She wouldn’t do that to my dad.”

She rolled her eyes before responding, “Get real, Jenna. Your mom and dad haven’t been sleeping in the same room for months now.”

“How do you know this?”

“I overheard them talking one night when she was over our house. Their already separated. Why do you think he’s gone all the time? And their getting a divorce soon.”

“You’re lying.” I shook my head. She was just trying to piss me off which was working. I couldn’t believe they were getting a divorce.

“Ask her.” She shrugged, turning back to the magazine and flipping over another page.

I ran downstairs and into the dining room where Eric was nibbling on my mother’s neck. Tears started sprouting down my face. “Is it true?”

Eric quickly moved away and mom looked up at me in horror. “Is what true honey?”

“That you and dad are getting a divorce?”

“Oh honey I didn’t want you to find out like this.” She said coming over to me.

She tried to hug me but I moved away from her. “I can’t believe you.” I grabbed my coat and ran out of the house. I had to get away from here and think. I wasn’t the dramatic type but it seemed like everything in my life was falling apart. There was no silver lining. I got in my car and drove off. I was so angry that I wasn’t really paying attention to the road and before I knew it there was a deer in my lane.

I panicked and swerved off the road and hit a tree.

Well I know how it feels a little but it was at such an early age that I really don't remember too much, so it doesn't matter now. Thanks! You'll just have to read to find out hehe :D

Tue, June 21st, 2011 10:20pm

I don't really like Mackenzie, but I don't hate her. I see why she would have bitter feelings for Jenna what with knowing about their parents and the misunderstanding at the party. And very dramatic; did not see this coming. kmu? :)

Blushing Brunette

Long chapter but I don't know? It was missing something, it seemed.. I can't put my finger on it. Like it was rushed or missing a point in the whole chapter. Like you were just rambling to write. There was also a few words missings in some parts of it. I didn't mean to be rude or mean but I'm trying to help you be a better writer. x) Don't be mad at me. Please I'm begging you don't be mad at me. As always, KMU

Wed, June 22nd, 2011 5:30am

Oh no I'm not mad. Actually I'm glad you pointed it out because it shows that you were really paying attention. And it probably does because it was meant to be two separate chapters. I was actually rushing because I had to do other things but I'll come back to it when I'm done writing all the chapters. Its really just a rough draft right now.

Its probably the thanksgiving part you're referring to. That was meant to be chapter seven. But anyhoo thanks for reading and of course! :)

And her parents are getting a divorce too? EEEP! Poor Jenna :( I can't even imagine what that must be like...
