Chapter 7

Mark is your average kind of guy; dark chocolate colored hair, tall, with piercing blue eyes that he got from his mother and the cutest dimple on his left cheek! He had a beautiful girlfriend named Allison, Ally for short, and was thinking he was ready to propose! Fresh out of university, Mark thought the sky is the limit and was very hopeful at landing a prestigious job at a law firm (Cooper, Thompson and Hyde). It seemed as though his whole life was going great until, of course, he learned that he had stage one brain cancer.

Brain cancer is a rare thing at his age but rare doesn’t always mean it won’t happen; a sentence repeated to him from his many university pals (who are now interns at the hospital where his diagnosis took place). As rare as it was; as complicated as it could’ve been, if it weren’t for that accident he got into with some friends, he would’ve found out too late and it would’ve been catastrophic!

Since he found out, a lot of changes occurred in his live and each more ghastly than the previous. It all began the day he found out he had cancer…

***

After Sam’s freak out the night of the accident and they all went home safe and sound, Mark sat quietly in his room contemplating; of all the horrible things in the world to happen to me, he thought, it HAD to be cancer? As he sat there, an epiphany came in the form of a fortune cookie slip of paper which read “Courage isn’t the absence of fear; it is the presence of fear yet the will to go on”. This somehow gave Mike strength to decide to tell his girlfriend about his, shall we say, condition the very next day.

Mark and Ally met in their usual spot by the mall fountain— yes, the mall fountain! Sitting there enjoying each other’s company, Mark decides to ask her a few questions.

“Hey Ally, would you still love me if I didn’t look like me anymore?” he asked carefully.

“What kind of question is that? Of course I would! Why on Earth would you ask me that?” she replied shocked.

“I’m just saying, if something happened that might change me, would you still be here?”

“Mark, please tell me what this is about, I don’t understand why you would ask me this!”

“It’s kind of hard for me to say—“

“Just tell me honey, whatever it is we will work it out together”

“Okay, here goes… Ally, I have stage 1 brain tumor” said Mark finally.

“W—What, Cancer? Are you sure? When did this happen, when did you find out?” stammered Ally.

“Yes, I’m sure. We found out yesterday after the little accident I had so that’s how it all happened.” Replied Mark as calmly as he could.

“Ally look, please don’t worry—“

”What do you mean I SHOULDN’T WORRY? MY BOYFRIEND WHOM I LOVE JUST TOLD ME HE HAS CANCER!” exclaimed Ally as she got up.

“Where are you going? Ally, we need to talk about this!”

“I can’t Mark, not now! You can’t expect me to be okay with this, I’ll call you later” Ally said whilst walking away.

Mark just stood there watching her go, oblivious to the fact the several onlookers were still staring at the scene that just occurred. He then realized that people were staring so he cursed at them and walked away angrily. When he got home, he slammed the door and refused to talk to anyone, childish though it may seem; he just wasn’t in the mood!

Since that argument with Ally, Mark hadn’t seen nor heard from her. He tried calling, texting IM-ing and anything else he could think of and still zilch, NOTHING! He tried going over to her house, but even then her mom told him to stay away and that Ally didn’t want to see him anymore. Because of his unexpected breakup, Mark couldn’t take living anymore, he cursed at his family for bringing him into this life only to be dumped by the girl he loved and to get cancer. He went to his chemotherapy sessions only after being dragged there by either Sammie or James. He lost his gorgeous head of hair and lost a lot of weight. And depression took its toll in him.

***

As the days stretched into weeks, the family started to worry about Mark; this is no longer just a phase, they thought, it is more of a lifestyle now. They considered sending him to a therapist; maybe it just hit him that he has cancer. Mark fought with them constantly and was constantly alone but then, a letter came in the mail that seemed to be a miracle in disguise…

***

“Mark, there is a letter for you in the mail, please open up” pleaded Mom.

“Mom, leave it by the door, I don’t want to see any of you right now.”

“But dear, this is really good news, please let us share it with you”

“Fine, just you then!” conceded Mark.

As Cathy enters her son’s pigsty of a room (no one has cleaned it in weeks and it is starting to smell) and held the envelope high up announcing that this is a letter from the law firm.

“So what did they want?” asked a disinterested Mark.

“Well, dear they said that they have accepted your application and that simply… YOU GOT THE JOB!!” exclaimed Mom.

“YAY!” said Mark sarcastically.

“Oh come on Mark, when are you going to stop sulking? I know this is very insensitive of me but SHE LEFT YOU; the sooner you accept that, the sooner you can move on with your life.”

“But she was the—“Mark started.

“Don’t you dare say she was the One, because if she were, then she would’ve been there for you; it’s called in sickness and in health for a reason my son, please Mark, be reasonable! She didn’t even have the guts to tell you in person, do you really want to marry someone like her?”

“Mom, it’s not that, You know what mom, forget it! I don’t want to talk about it anymore! And if it’ll make you feel better, I’ll meet with them tomorrow! Can you leave me alone now please?”

Cathy left Mark to his own devices thinking that at least he is going tomorrow to meet with them. Mark on the other hand was trying to come up with a way to get out of going tomorrow.

***

Mark put on his freshly dry cleaned suit (complements of his mother) and got ready to meet with the executives of the firm. Getting into his car, Mark was absolutely fuming; he couldn’t believe his mom made him do this. I have cancer for goodness sakes, he thought, why on earth would they want to hire me now? In total honesty, when he found out he had cancer, Mark emailed the executives and told them about his condition but as it turns out, they didn’t care and still want to meet with him, Mark still unsure why.

“Hi there, I have an appointment with Mr. Cooper”

“And you are?” asked the obnoxious assistant.

“Mark Saunders, I have an appointment at 9:00am which is now, I believe.” said Mark coolly.

“One moment please. Hello, Mr. Cooper, your 9:00 is here to see you. Uhuh… Uhuh… Uhuh yes, Mark Saunders. Uhuh… yes, yes okay sir. Mr. Cooper will see you now.” said the assistant.

“Yes, come in Mr. Saunders. I am Brad Cooper, a senior partner of Cooper, Thompson and Hyde but you can call me Brad” said Mr. Cooper as he shook Mark’s hand.

“It is a pleasure to meet you Mr. Cooper—I mean Brad” Mark corrected himself hastily.

“May I be so bold as to ask about your condition, Mr. Saunders?” asked Brad timidly.

“Please, sir, call me Mark, and you can ask whatever you want sir” replied Mark politely.

“What is it you have exactly? When did you find out? How are you coping?”

“Well, I have stage one brain cancer, yes it is very rare at my age but what can you do. I found out a few weeks ago and when I found out, I emailed you letting you know my condition. And finally, I am doing okay sir” ended Mark with a smile.

“Well, I must say, it is quite refreshing to see a young man handle himself they way you just did. How about we skip the rest of this meeting and start the tour?” said Brad genially.

“It would be my pleasure sir” said Mark with a genuine smile not seen on his face for a long time.

***

With Mark taking this prestigious job, his family began to see a change in him, in a mere 3 weeks. He seemed to be finally beginning to live his life, and with Brad’s support, Mark could not have been in better hands. He now goes to work with purpose and goes to corporate meetings and lunches as well as dinner parties and client meetings. Being under the wing of Brad Cooper has many privileges; for instance, Mark was slowly rising in the firm with a promise of making partner by next year; less than that if Mark doesn’t lose his winning streak. Another privilege would be having Brad as a mentor; Mark didn’t know the meaning of losing a case. Finally; Brad introduced him to all the right circles and he has become very popular in just 3 weeks.

Mark’s treatment was going well and the doctors were now hopeful that he will be making a good recovery; so long as the tumor doesn’t metastasize, i.e.; spread to other organs. Mark met some very interesting people in the chemotherapy center, especially this one girl, Jenny, who was around his age and had breast cancer. They started off having casual conversations, which slowly became a little more than casual. They exchanged cell phone numbers and have been texting non-stop. They see each other only in the center and she too seems to be beating the cancer. Mark and Jenny both now feel like they have a reason to live and both have had similar stories of heartbreak. Mark loved Jenny’s gray eyes and her beautiful smile; though he only knew her when she had lost her hair, Jenny showed him a picture pre cancer and she just grew more beautiful in his eyes. When Mark showed her a picture of him pre-treatment, she told him she prefers him bald, it suits him more she said whilst blushing. Mark loved it when Jenny would blush; it showed him her modesty and shyness which, to him, is so endearing and adorable.

One very cold Monday afternoon, Mark went with Sam to chemo and met his beautiful Jenny there. She told him she has wonderful news; she is completely and absolutely cancer free and she is so happy. Mark was beyond happy for her but he feared to never see her again; a fear abolished by her simple words.

“Mark, I want you to get better as well, I am not leaving you and couldn’t imagine being with anyone else. I Lo—Love you!” she said blushing a deep red.

“And, I Love you my beautiful Jenny, and for you I will get better; for you I will.” said Mark simply.

***

Samantha was watching these developments from far away, and she loved every second of that cute declaration! Now that Jenny is cured Mark wont fear losing her and he will want to get better, she thought, he just has to. Pretending she wasn’t eavesdropping, Sam continued her dreadfully long Math homework and waited for Mark’s arrival. Mark looked suspiciously at Sam but said nothing to her, instead he went to his chemotherapy session, leaving Sam to do her homework.

***

Mark decided to go to chemo on his own from now on, as well as join a gym to get his muscle bulk back. Even though chemo takes too much out of a person, Mark decided to stop it ruling what he can and cannot do; thus going back to his “sky is the limit” attitude; and he couldn’t be happier. When life hands you lemons, make lemonade; not just any old lemonade he thought, I am going to make it the best one yet.

Friday night, Cathy was preparing a special dinner after Mark had announced that he is bringing home a girl he fell for and that he hopes that they would be nice and courteous after, of course, he explained where he had met her and the fact that she is still bald after chemo. Cathy and Dan were more than happy to meet the girl who turned Mark’s life around.

When Jenny arrived at the house, she was greeted very warmly and kindly by the family; since Sam already knew her, all went smoothly and dinner was absolutely perfect. Sam decides to have a little heart to heart with Jenny while the parents talk to Mark.

“She is absolutely lovely Mark, she is amazingly sweet” said Cathy in approval.

“Mark, I agree with your mother on that one, you did good son” said Dan

“I am going to ask her to marry me” said Mark finally.

“Wow, son, are you sure?”

“In sickness and in health, right mom?” said Mark.

“Be sure sweetheart before making a big decision though” conceded Mom.

“I know what I am doing mom, it’s going to be okay” said Mark.

“I am not going to propose yet, I was just letting you know that she is the one and I love her dearly and she is the one I am going to marry”

“In that case, I am really happy for you” said mom with a sigh of relief.

Once Jenny leaves, Samantha tells Mark how much she likes her and admits to him that she heard their little exchange at the center and walks off. Mark smiles inspite of himself, things are officially looking up.

***

Four weeks after the dinner with the family, Mark’s work life becomes more hectic and more responsibility falls onto his shoulders. This is something for which he was grateful for; all this work keeps his mind off the sickness and he is able to love life again. Mark’s gym commitment is still going on and he has managed to regain some of the muscle mass he lost during chemo. Mark heads out to his chemotherapy session and meets with one of the doctors. The doctor shows him MRI scans of his brain; and makes medical comments here and there. Mark becomes impatient and asks the doctor to clarify using English… the doctor simply hands him a letter which he reads, his eyes widening…

After his final chemotherapy session of the week, he calls his parents and siblings and asks them all to meet him at the house at 6:00pm which is an hour away. Mark goes to find Jenny and sit with her and shares the news, while Jenny sobs in his arms. He asks her if she would come with him to tell his family; he cannot tell them by himself. She picks up her things, wipes away her tears and gets in his car.

Mark enters the living room to find his entire family sitting there. When he enters he makes the biggest announcement of his life.

“Everyone, the doctor said that I cannot continue with chemo anymore; seeing as there is no point anymore” said Mark.
