Chapter One: The Beginning
“Um, alright, I kinda got this idea of using a video camera from watching one of my favorite horror movies. Where the survivors are video taping themselves and making a documentary on how they’re surviving the horror, even though the others don’t care about the video.
Well, my name is Ethan Cavanaugh and this is my side of the story. It all started out as a normal day. No one knew what was going to happen. Nor did anyone care at first. But that’s how most chaos starts in stories right?
Maybe I’ll start at the beginning. Dr. Baxter. He’s a scientist from West Virginia and he was the one who, Um, wait let me start this at a different beginning. It all started on a Saturday morning, when I found out most of my family was dead…”
My eyes fluttered as I was hit in the face by the bright light coming through my window. I sat up and stretched. Last night…must’ve been crazy since I don’t remember even most of it.
I got out of bed and heard something drop downstairs. I didn’t know what it was but I figured it must’ve been my mother. I stepped out into the hallway and everything seemed normal except for the whimpering coming from my sister’s room. I had two older sisters, one who’s in college and the one that was graduating high school in a few months.
She still lived with us while my older sister moved to upstate New York. I opened the door slowly and saw that my sister was sleeping and my dog, who is only a puppy, was sitting on the bed with her.
“Sadie, wake up!” I said pushing at her. She smacked me as she rolled over.
“Ow! Come on Sadie,” She continued sleeping before mumbling “5 more minutes” or at least that’s what I thought she said.
I walked back into the hallway leaving Sadie and Hunter in there. I closed the door carefully. “Mom?” I called out. I got no answer.
Without thinking that anything was wrong I walked into the living room only to notice their was blood every where; bloody hand prints covered the walls along with the smears of it everywhere. What the hell happened here? The living room was vacant along with the rest of the house. I walked closer to the other side of the couch and I saw my mom.
Faced up, mouth open and her eyes were white. I fell back slightly, shocked. I covered my mouth as I shook my head. The stench was unbearable, this can’t be happening. Who would do this?
I didn’t want to go near her, not like this. She looked scary, her skin was pale and most of it was covered in her blood, and her veins were a different color, I didn’t know if they were black or something else.
I ran into the kitchen and grabbed the phone and dialed 911. A recorded voice came on.
"THIS IS AN EMERGENCY BROADCAST, I REPEAT AN EMERGENCY BROADCAST, DO NOT GO NEAR THE DEAD, DO NOT OPEN ANY DOORS, EVERYONE IS TO REMAIN INSIDE WITH LOCKED DOORS AND WINDDOWS, DO NOT OPEN FOR THE DEAD, STAY INDOORS,"
It just repeated after again. I hung up the phone. What the hell did they mean by the dead? I ran back down the hall into Sadie’s room. She was still sleeping and Hunter was still scared. I pushed her harder this time. “Sadie you need to wake up now! We have a situation!” She sat up in bed. “What is so important Ethan!?” I looked her straight in the eye. “Mom’s dead,” The look on her face changed from mad to something else.
“You’re not serious! You’re lying!” I shook my head. “If you think I’m lying go check downstairs!” I said. I turned on her TV wondering if we would get the same message as the one on the phone.
There were some stations still going live and we both looked at the screen intensely. “Hello and Good Morning to those in Pennsylvania who are just joining us. We’re here to discuss what looks like a flu virus outbreak that’s currently happening in our county.
We’re also here to discuss a shooting that went on earlier today,” While the woman was talking in front of an ambulance you could see a body being carried out in a gurney and without warning we see the paramedics screaming along with the bystanders. What we saw next was unbelievable, the body was getting up. That person was still alive.
We saw the person limp towards the police that were shooting it but it wouldn’t die. We had no idea what was going on but another person came out of no where and bit the news woman.
The camera man ran and dropped the camera and then there was static. I stared at Sadie. “Get dressed, we have to leave now!” I said to her. “Pack what ever you can, I gotta go get something,” The one good thing about our dad being a cop is that he brought his guns home with him, the bad side he did abuse cases and for the past year he’s been bringing his work home.
I went into our parent’s room and got the duffle bag that was under the bed. I opened it to make sure this is the bag with all the guns and it was. There were a bunch of pistols and hand guns. I took a pistol and put it in my back pocket. I lugged the bag back into my room down the hallway.
I grabbed my back pack and put a bunch of my clothes in it and then grabbed another one and went into the kitchen and grabbed whatever food that wouldn’t go bad. I quickly grabbed the car keys that were left on the kitchen counter. We had no idea where were even going yet.
I went back up into Sadie’s room and handed her the bag with the food while I took the duffle back and my back pack. We grabbed Hunter since he was only just a pup and walked back to the living room. I saw how shocked Sadie was when she saw all the blood, but she gave me a look when she didn’t see our mother lying on the ground where I told her.
My heart was pounding in my chest. What the fuck is going on here? Is this some kind of joke? It can’t be the phones, and the news. I stopped thinking and grabbed the gun out of my back pocket when we stood there in horror staring at our own mother, who was now limping towards us.
