Thirty minutes into my second run from Denver to Trinidad, the sky grows darker by the minute. Bright veins of lightning strike at the foothills and rumble with each flash. So far the road’s dry, but this sort of cloud always dumps a blinding downpour. A rest stop would be a good place to wait out the storm, but there’s also a chance of becoming a sitting duck for the white warriors.

My eyes widen and glue to the side view mirror. To the rear, a funnel cloud reaches down from the sky. It lashes at the air, and the whistle of the wind amplifies.

A hand sprouts from the tail of the tornado. When it points an index finger at my van, there’s no question of it being supernatural and out for my blood.

A body tremor starts in my torso and works its way through my limbs. My first impulse is to floor the gas pedal even though I can’t possibly outrun the storm. Better option, get off the highway, out of the van, and to lower ground—let it have the cargo. I slam down on the brake, steady the van out of a fishtail, and skid to a stop in the median.

Margery pipes in. “Honey, get out of the van!”

“No shit.” I kick open the driver’s side door. The whipping wind cracks metal and rips it off the hinges. I hold tightly onto the steering wheel so as to not be sucked out next.

Margery warns me again, her barking muffled by the roaring tornado.

Against the force of the airstream circulating throughout the cab, I climb to the passenger seat. It takes the force of my entire body to open the passenger side door. I jump out, dive over the guardrail, and roll down a steep embankment. Frantically, my hands grab at anything and everything to slow my momentum. Boulders and branches jab my torso and limbs, and I lose a shoe. When my head smacks against something hard, I’m knocked out cold.
