The next morning, my eyes pop open at 4:40 A.M., same as yesterday. A dampness between my legs has me on my feet, wondering if Margery can torment me in my dreams.

Then I realize it’s milk. I fell asleep eating a bowl of Tootie Fruities cereal and watching reruns of Sanford and Son. As I stretch, pastel colored rings fall off my jeans and onto the floor. What a freakin’ mess, but cleanup will have to wait. There’s got to be some way out of Margery’s contract, and the sooner I get to the warehouse the sooner I can figure it out.

After a long, hot shower, I exit the bathroom rubbing a towel over my head. Off to my right, there’s an open instant message window on the computer screen from Nina. We worked together earlier this year, testing software that screws people out of extra insurance premiums based on their health history. Ironic that she still works there because I was doing both our jobs back then. She’d visit my cubical wearing a short skirt, sit on my desk, and swing her shapely legs. Then she’d beg me to finish her testing so she could go home early. I still do whatever she asks. I can’t help myself. I’d do just about anything for her.

My heart skips when a new message from Nina pops up.

Nina: Barry Bear, you there yet?

She only calls me that when she wants something.

Barry: Yep.

Nina: Where you been?

I pause and think about telling her about Margery and my mission to open the Gates of Hell, but I don’t. She’d only laugh at me.

Barry: Why you on IM so early in the morning?

Nina: Software install. Still waiting to test.

Barry: Bummer

Even though I’d give anything to be in her shoes.

Nina: Well??? Where you been???

Damn, she’s not giving up.

Barry: Started a new job. Hate my new boss already.

Nina: Call in sick and take me to lunch. :-)

My heart pounds hard until she adds.

Nina: I wish. Probably stuck here for days.

Barry: Gotta go. Work starts early.

Nina: Bye. Miss you! :-( IM me tonight.

She must need a huge favor because Nina is almost always busy in the evening.

I walk away from my computer and get ready for another day in Hell, literally.

On my way out the door, my phone rings. It’s Margery. I think to ignore her, but know that won’t do any good. “I’m on my way,” I say without bothering to answer the phone.

“You’re learning,” she says, followed by one of her annoying cackles.

My grip tightens on my phone. “What do you want?”

“Don’t forget to pick me up a coffee.”

“I know,” my voice irritated. “You told me yesterday.”

She clears her throat. “I guess you choose your lessons.”

“Sorry.” I flip the phone the bird.

“Don’t get any of that Starcrap or whatever they call it. Stop at the Purgalator. It’s a block before the warehouse. Tell him you’re picking up for Margery.”

“Purgalator? There are only warehouses and office buildings on that block.”

“This early in the morning, do you really want to question a demon who hasn’t had any coffee?”

My heart skips. “No, no. I’ll find it.”
