Chapter Seven

We stepped into the building at our usual time. We worked until our usual time.

At 4:33 precisely we snuck around the back to the cells. I pressed on the door as lightly as I could, holding my breath. The door slid open slowly, almost as cautious as us. I looked over at Landon, his blue eyes wide.

He nodded. I slipped into the room, the smell of old, dried blood and vomit once again attacking me. I bit my tongue to keep myself from gagging. I put up the hood of my black jacket, slipped on my gloves, and put the cover over my mouth. I wouldn’t be able to cover my legs. Too much fabric weighs us down in case we want to run. Landon did the same. Pretty soon, only our eyes and legs were showing. My virescent eyes, his azure. I knew he was smiling, just by the crinkles on the sides of his eyes. I smiled back, knowing he was only trying to make me feel at ease.

We slipped from behind the boxes, the smell of vomit becoming more and more prominent as we reached the cells. I heard the fast breathing of Kailee. We were right next to her cell. She was breathing as if she had just been running. I snuck over to look at her. She was staring face up at the ceiling, her stomach moving up and down at an incredible rate. Her eyes didn’t move. Her lips, however, were reciting words over and over that I couldn’t seem to understand. She recited them in very low whispers. Her eyes snapped to me.

She lunged at the cage, still quiet. I took a step back, startled. She made almost no sound. My lips parted, shocked. Landon took my hand. Her eyes were wild, her hair was everywhere. She tilted her head, almost painfully, and kept her gaze to me. I didn’t break her stare.

“Kailee?”I heard Landon whisper, his eyes wide.

Her eyes grew wide, showing the first hint of humanity I’d seen in her. She tilted her head the other way, and I saw tears brimming in her eyes. She snapped her arm out towards Landon’s face cover, grabbing violently. She lunged, farther this time, her voice growing louder with every strain.

“...I await the saviors, the strangers who will come and save us from this hell...”

I pulled Landon back, but she just attempted to reach farther and farther.

We both tripped backwards, falling. I crawled backwards, trying to get away from her. A single, red, tear slipped down her face. Her eyes became bloodshot in a matter of seconds, her movements becoming shaky and more rigid. Her head snapped back and she cried out in pain. I heard her bones breaking, one by one. She fell backwards, onto the floor. She laid there for a couple minutes.

I stared at her in horror. I couldn’t believe my eyes. My skin was flushed, cold. I felt a tear slip down my face. I quickly wiped it and looked to make sure it wasn’t blood. I couldn’t take my eyes off of her.

“Cell #5 needs attention.”

Landon and I looked at each other and then back at Kailee. Her head snapped forward at us, her eyes completely red. Her skin pale, seeming to be breaking at the edges of her face. She began to laugh at us, her demonic voice filling my ears.

“Who goes there?” A robotic voice demanded. Guards began running down the hallway, towards us. We stood up, staring at the guards running towards us, trying to look for an escape. Landon and I ran the way we came, slipping out of the door before more guards saw us. We fell to the ground, shocked. We were out of breath. I could still hear Kailee’s demonic laugh from outside. I wondered why we could never hear what was happening when we were working.

“What the hell just happened? What was that, Hannah?!” Landon gasped, staring at me.

“I have no idea,” I breathed, “But we’re going to find out.”
