Chapter 3:

I clutched the now empty beer can in my hand. All right, one down, more to go, I thought to myself, placing the can onto the littered coffee table. The liquid sat heavily in my stomach like a bunch of rocks. I was beginning to feel queasy, but I guess that was to be expected since this was my first time drinking. I felt bad for breaking my promise to Jack, but then again, this was something that I needed to try.

It was surprising how everyone thought that getting drunk was fun. I wasn't having much fun, to be quite honest. Sitting there, I watched everyone stumble around, laughing and trying not to fall over. One girl was throwing up in the corner while her friends surrounded her, patting her back gently. Yeah, I definitely didn't want that to happen to me, maybe I should stop while I was already ahead. I knew that I shouldn't be doing this, especially since Jack could show up at any minute to come pick me up, but I didn't have much time to experience this.

"Hey you!"

I jumped at the familiar voice. All right, just play it cool, I coaxed myself. I turned slowly to face the guy I spilled water on.

"What can I help you with?" I said simply.

He crossed his arms over his broad chest. "You owe me something."

I blinked a few times. I had no idea what he was talking about, especially since I alreadyapologized to him.

"Oh yeah? What would that be?" I replied, narrowing my eyes at him.

The sly grin that spread across his lips was something to be remembered. It transformed his face into something warm and welcoming. I almost gaped at him, but I decided not to show how his smile affected me. My heart was pounding in my chest and I could hear it ringing in my ears, or that might just be from the alcohol I consumed. It's definitely the alcohol, I scolded myself.

"Come with me and I'll show you," he answered in a mysterious tone.

I wasn't sure if I could trust him, but then again, I did kind of owe him for spilling water all over him. I looked down at his shirt and my mouth fell open. He had put a new shirt on! That meant he basically freaked out about nothing...

"Hey Matt, leave Zoey alone. I promised Jack nothing would happen to her!" I heard Dylan call from the hallway while he was getting some kind of lap dance from a drunk girl.

I almost laughed, watching her fall all over herself. Matt made a growling sound low in his throat and it made goose bumps spread across my arms, making the fine hairs at the back of my neck stand on end.

"Just because my brother made a promise to your friend, doesn't mean I'm going to listen to it," Matt said, taking a few steps towards me, until his leg brushed my thigh.

I had no idea that Dylan and Matt were brothers. They didn't even look alike! I studied Matt for a moment through my eyelashes, trying to find similarities, but I couldn'tfind any. In a flash of movement, Matt gripped my wrist and yanked me up against hismuscular body. A deepflush spread across my neck and shot up towards my face. My heart began racing in my chest as his calloused hands gripped my waist, his fingers sliding under the hem of my shirt.

I thought he was going to try and make a grab for my chest, but he never did. His hands just stayed where they were on my lower back. My body was tingling all over and I couldn't stop it. It made me feel helpless and ashamed that I was reacting this way.

"Tell me you know how to dance," Matt asked hopefully, pressing himself closer as though he wanted to crawl inside my skin.

"I guessthis would be a bad time to tell you I can't dance then," I retorted, trying to shove myself away from him, but his arms were like a vice around me.

Matt grinned and I felt my heart flutter against my breast. "It's never too late to learn."

"No thankyou. I don't really feel like dancing right now," I snapped, pressing my hands against his broad chest trying to dislocate him from me.

The warmth that pentrated his shirt startled me. I mean, I know he was human and he was warm blooded, but in my mind I guess I imagined him as a gross cold blooded reptile. The strong heart beat underneath my right palm made me realize I wasn't pushing him away, but pulling him closer.

What was I doing? I needed to get out of this situation fast. I knew thatMatt was one of those guys who just used a girl for his own pleasure and thenleft them the next day. That wassomething I definitely didn't want to experience.

"Hey! Let go of her!"

I relaxed in relief. Jackgrabbed a hold of Matt by the shoulder and pulled him away from me.

"Calm down, I was only dancing with her," Matt explained, his face becoming cold and impassive.

I was shocked at the sudden change in his mood and I knew thatI had to get Jack out of here before it turnedugly.

"It's fine Jack, let's just get out of here. I want to go home," I said, grabbing a hold ofJack's arm and leading him towards the front door.

Jack frowned at me."You do know how that was right? He could have had you three ways till Sunday before I even got here. You were lucky he didn't try anything."

I rolled my eyes.If Matt had tried anything else, I was pretty sure I would have made it impossible for him to have children. He'd be shooting blanks forthe rest of his life.

"He's the one I spilled water on," I told Jack as we got into his truck.

"Why doesn't that surprise me?"he sighed, pushing his key into the ignition and starting the truck.

It roared to life and hetore down theroad at a neck breaking speed. This was bad. Jack waspissed andthere was no way I was going to be able to explain anything to him while he was in this state. I sighed and sank into theseat, deciding to let him fume. It wasn't as if I did anything wrong anyway so there was no need for him to get all cranky.

That meant there was no way in hell I was going to tell him I drank.
