Chapter four:

"You guys have been avoiding each other," I said glancing over at Kaylee as she stood at her locker, stealthily eyeing Jack.

Jack shrugged. "She told me to pretend like nothing happened at the party. I'm only doing what she asked of me."

I rolled my eyes. "Since when have you listened to what anybody said?"

He didn't answer. Instead, he pulled out his binder and slammed his locker closed. He was avoiding Kaylee more than usual, which wasn't normal. It was incredible enough that she had actually talked to him the first time, even if it was in an embarrassing situation. I didn't understand why Jack would listen to Kaylee, if he liked her, he should make an attempt to go after her.

"Are you still coming over tonight or did you have better plans?" I asked Jack, just to get his mind back on track.

He shrugged, keeping his face blank. "If you want me to then I will."

In my mind, that just proved that there was something bothering Jack. I had two options 1) beat the explination out of him or 2) ignore him and pretend like everything is okay. I wasn't sure which one to pick and I was a little scared to just randomly beat the living shit out of Jack, knowing that he would hit me back if I tried. There was always the fact that he always talked to me about everything, which made this conversation a little more difficult than I had planned. I guess it was better to get it done and over with.

I stepped in front of him, blocking his way from entering our sixth period, Art. "I know there's something wrong. You can't hide it forever, but I won't push you to tell me. If it's that big of a secret, then I can respect the factthat you don't want to tell me."

I was almost surprised to see the grin that spread across his handsome face. When it didn't reach his eyes, I knew that he was only trying to look happy for me, like he normally did."It's not a big deal, Zo. I can handle it myself."

I scoffed. I thought he was going to break down and tell me, but I guess I was wrong. One way or another, I was going to get him to tell me. I let him past me though and followed slowly behind him. There was something definitely going on and it was going to bug me the rest of the day.

"Is that your new look or something?" Jack asked as he flopped down on my bed, crossing his arms behind his head.

I dropped my puppy - dog look to frown at him. Apparently it didn't work on him anymore. I just had to find a new tactic. I climbed up on the bed beside him and laid my chin on his chest, staring up at him.

"Why do you want to know so bad?" he finally sighed after a few minutes.

"You always tell me everything...," I said quietly. "And it's not like I'm going to tell anyone else."

He gave another sigh and ran his hand down his face. I had been pushing all day to just get him to tell me his 'big secret', but nothing seemed to work and it was wearing thin on my patience.

"I know, but what if I didn't want to tell you? Is it that big of a deal?" Jack answered, avoiding his eyes.

"It is a big deal! It's making you act weird and I don't like it," I pouted. I was trying to make him feel like crap, becauseit was the only secret weapon I had left.

Jack glanced at me out of the corner of his eye and I could tell that his defenses were finally falling. "If I tell you, would you notbug me about it?"

I raised a quizzical eyebrow at him. "You two didn't have sex did you? I mean, you were gone for about four hours."

He shook his head vigorously.I hoped he was telling the truth.

"I kissed her."

"You did what?"

"Ikissed her."

I smacked him hard on the chest, the sound ringing through my room."What the hell was that for!?"

"Because you're an idiot! That's not even that bad. Why would you hide that from me?" I exclaimed, glaring at him.

"I didn't want you to make a big deal out of it, like you are now," he snapped. He sat up and pushed me off of him. I caught myself on the edge of the bed so I wouldn't fall off.

"Why are you acting like this?" I replied.

"I'm not acting like anything."

I sighed and rolled my eyes. Obviously, this bothered him more than what he put on. I felt guilty for making him tell me now, especially since he didn't want to tell me in the first place. Scooting closer to Jack, I slid my arms around his waist and laid my head against his chest.

"I'm sorry, okay?" I said quietly. "I just got upset because you usually tell me everything and it made me mad that you couldn't trust me enough to tell me something like that."

He slid his arms around my shoulders and squeezed me back before setting me away from him. "I do trust you Zo, but I just didn't want to tell anyone that I kissed her. She didn't want me to acknowledge that it happened, so why should I?"

"I'm not just anybody though, Jack. I'm your best friend, remember?" I smiled at him and ruffled his hair.

He smiled back at me and flopped back down on my bed. "Yeah."

I laid down next to him and we stared at the white ceiling in a comfortable silence.
