Book I:
Limen

Preface: I Nitium
I had walked on at the wind's will,/ I sat now, for the wind was still.
-Dante Gabriel Rossetti
"Ow!" She yelped.
"Sorry!" I replied. "Your hair is just full of tangles. When was the last time you brushed it?"
"I don't remember," Twilight mumbled.
"I do," I forced the brush through the snarls in her copper curls and was rewarded with a hiss of pain. "It was three days ago. You know, it wouldn't be so messy if you brushed it every day."
"Yeah, well, put it on my to-do list." She growled.
"Ouch, kitty's got claws."
She wriggled out of my grip and turned to face me. "I'm sorry, Rain, I'm just so stressed out about the whole thing, you know? I mean, getting up in front of everybody? Major case of stage fright ."
"Just don't sweat it. You'll do great," I beamed at her, my famous everything's-gonna-work-out-fine-but-if-it-doesn't-we'll-go-get-ice cream-afterwards smile.
She gave her thanks-for-the-support-but-I'm-still-nervous smile.
I rolled my eyes. "Come here. It's gonna take forever to get those tangles out."
She was gorgeous. Her curly red hair was brushed soft and shiny, her eyes rimmed in eyeliner with green eyeshadow that matched her green sundress. Her pale face was flushed lightly, her violet eyes shining.
"It's okay, Twi. You'll do great."
She peeked from behind the thick red velvet curtains and paled considerably. "There's a lot of people out there."
I just smiled.
"And now, Miss Twilight Heat to read an original short story!"
"No no no noonononoonononono!" She whispered, eyes wide with fear, but before she could change her mind, she stepped out on stage.
I watched as she began to read, her confidence quickly growing as she told the story of twin witches Beatrice and Genevieve. By the end, everybody was cheering, and, breathless, she returned backstage.
Twilight ran up to me and captured me in a nearly-hysterical embrace, shrieking the entire time.
Everything happened so fast after that. We were on the beach, our feet in the frigid water, talking, laughing.
She told me she knew. Everything. She found my journal, and read every word on every page. She apologized, but it was lost, drowned out by the blood rushing through my ears.
She was gone. She spread her brilliant white wings, and left.
