Jace and I arrived at the house a couple hours later. Our parents were already there, along with the moving truck. I noticed another large truck and squeaked in excitement when I realized it had all my new furniture. Jace rolled his eyes at me. He kept all his old furniture, he had the basement at the old house, and it was filled with chairs and such that he wanted to keep when he moved into the basement here. I, on the other hand was moving into the attic. It was large, and I wanted a space to myself.
Jace and I hopped out of the car, and looked up at the giant house. It was white, and some of the paint was chipping. I knew we’d have to redo the outside. There was a tiny deck way up by a third story window. I smiled when I realized that the deck was off of the attic window.
“Jace, Zoey, get your stuff and get in here.” My father yelled from the window. He never seemed to be happy since he found out we were moving into the house. At first, he was thrilled…then when he started coming to do renovations, his mood seemed to change. He didn’t want to be doing anything. Of course, my knowledge of ghosts and demons kicked in, but I always thought I was being stupid. I grabbed my bag out of the car, and dropped on top of the clothes in my box, and began to carry the stuff inside. It was heavy, but I managed.
“Zoey, all of your new stuff is up in your room. Feel free to shift anything you please. Get unpacked, and come downstairs, there’s a surprise in your room by the way.” My mom said smiling. My dad, who was standing next to her, simply rolled his eyes and stomped outside. I sighed at my father, and waltzed upstairs. One thing people always noted about me was how gracefully I walked…that is when I wasn’t tripping. I got to the little door in the ceiling, and pulled it open. When I did, a ladder fell out halfway, and I pulled it down the rest until it touched the floor. I threw the bag up, then the box. They landed with a thud, and I climbed up. The room was perfect. My dad had painted it exactly the way I wanted it. The purple walls and the black checkers across the top, middle, and bottom, then the white ceiling for my friends to write whatever they pleased on. I looked around the room and stopped when I noticed a wall, and a small door. I stepped inside, and realized he had built a bathroom in. I was so excited. I opened the mirror, and pulled back the shower curtain. When I opened the shower, I screeched in excitement. There was a tiny black and tan yorkie puppy.
“Oh! Hi baby.” I said as I picked it up, scratching behind its ears noting the pink bow on its left ear. “So, you’re a little girl…what shall I name you?” I thought for a moment and decided on Baby. I had been hooked on that nickname since I watched the movie Dirty Dancing. “Baby…” I said as I gave her a kiss on the forehead. I walked over to the mirror, still holding her, to check my hair. I noticed a few pieces out of place and looked down, and ran my hand under some cool water. I looked back up, and screamed out in complete fear and shock. There was a boy standing behind me. I turned around quickly and he wasn’t there. I thought about him again, and realized he had jet black hair, and light blue eyes. He looked about seventeen. That’s when it hit me…he looked exactly like the boy from my dream.
---
The day had gone by slowly, and I was ready for bed. I slipped on my pajamas, and crawled into bed. Baby hopped up next to me, and tucked herself beside me. I fell into a dreamless sleep.
I awoke startled, with almost the same feeling as the night before when I woke up from my nightmare. I looked at the clock, and noted the time…3:24a.m. I gasped, and turned on my light. At the foot of my bed, there was a black rose. I picked it up, and examined it. It was real, but I swore that roses did not come in black.
“Like it?” I heard a boy’s voice ask. I gasped, and looked up to find the boy from my mirror sitting on the foot of my bed. I jumped back, out of nothing but human instincts. He laughed a little.
“Who are you?” I asked, staring in shock at the boy’s beauty.
“Kael, it’s very nice to meet you Zoey.” My eyes grew wide as the boy spoke to me.
“What are you doing here? How’d you get in?” The boy looked down, and began to speak softly.
“Let’s start with the part I feel like talking about, I got in because I was already in here. I believe you remember the mirror incident?” He smiled when my face turned red. “Yes, well, I’m here because, I lived here before you…and still stay here, along with my sister and my mother and father.” He seemed to struggle with the word father. I remembered my dream…and whispered,
“Kael, your father killed you, didn’t he?” I asked with my head down, realizing the boy was a ghost. I looked up to find his eyes wide with shock.
“How…how’d you know that?” He asked softly.
“Um, dream…psychic.” He smiled.
“Good. That makes it so much easier to talk to you. I suppose that means that you know already, I’m a ghost.”
“Yup!” I replied triumphantly. He laughed a little, and then stopped.
“Um, Zoey…I have to go! Goodbye, I’ll see you soon.”
“Wait!” He stopped and looked at me. “How can I see you again?” I asked, not wanting him to leave.
“Call me. Say my name, even if it’s in your head, and I’ll come to you. Be careful though, your brother will be able to see me…not your parents though.” I understood the fact about my brother seeing and not my parents…he believed this kind of stuff. That’s when half his sentence hit me.
“Wait a minute! You can hear my thoughts?!” I asked shocked.
“Yup…so, watch what you think.” He said smiling. I was dazed by his smile, and then realized to shut up my thoughts. “Thanks.” Kael added in response to my thought about his totally hot smile. He laughed as he faded, and I smacked myself on the head.
The morning came quickly, and I dreaded it. I heard someone climbing up my ladder.
“Zoey, get your lazy ass out of bed. School time! Let’s go.” My father yelled and then went back down. I glared at him, although he couldn’t see it. I got out of bed, and got ready for my first day of school. I picked out the best possible outfit, and made sure everything was perfect. I went out and stood in front of my closet doors, which were full length mirrors.
“You look beautiful.” I heard Kael’s voice, and turned to see him sitting on my bed. I smiled, and blushed. He acts as though I’ve known him forever.
“Thanks…are you going to follow me to school, or what?” I asked smiling.
“Do you want me to?” He asked walking over to me.
“Can’t you just read my mind to figure out the answer to that?” I asked while my thoughts were saying yes, yes, yes…. He laughed.
“Let’s go!” He said taking my hand. I could just barley feel it. I smiled, and climbed down my ladder. I ran out the front door, excited about school.
“Bye mom, bye dad!” I yelled as I passed them.
Kael and I walked down the sidewalk, still hand in hand, although I made it so the living wouldn’t notice.
The school was huge, and I stood on the sidewalk and stared. As I started to walk in, Kael stopped me.
“Zoey, you need to remember this…they can’t see me. If you start talking to me, everyone will think you’re stupidly nuts-o.” He laughed, “So, if you have to talk to me, say it in your head, and I can talk to you like this. I’ll give you tips through out, it’ll help.” Just then, a girl with short, wavy brown hair, and grayish colored eyes walked up to me.
“Hi, you must be new here, I’m Sammy Daniels.” She said putting a hand out. I shook it.
“Nice to meet you, I’m Zoey Marks.” I replied. As I did so, I thought to Kael asking if she was ok.
“She’s fine. She’ll be a great friend, and so will Aaron.” He replied to me as a boy with blonde hair and green eyes walked up and took a place by her.
“Hey Sammy!Who’s this?” He asked shaking my hand.
“I’m Zoey Marks. I’m new here.” I said, feeling stupid knowing he probably knew I was new. He laughed a little.
“I had the feeling…I’m Aaron Mathews.” He said releasing my hand. “So, do you need any help?” He asked politely. Kael glared, and I felt his jealousy wash over him…I’m empathic, I can feel other’s emotions. I asked what he was thinking.
“Oh, he thinks you’re hot, and he wants to date you.” He said angrily. I laughed a little.
“Yeah, could you tell me where the office is?” Aaron and Sammy led me to the office, where I picked up my schedule and locker number. I walked to my locker alone, as Sammy and Aaron went to their first period class. I was excused so that I could get set up.
“Hey there cutie.” A boy’s voice said from beside me. I glared and looked up to see a boy about seventeen standing there. I ignored him, and continued with my lock. “Come on, are you really going to just ignore me?” He asked, giving me the puppy face. I put on a fake smile. “That’s more like it! Now, I’m Drake, what’s your name?” He asked putting out a hand. I shook it once and dropped it.
“Zoey.” I replied waiting for him to leave.
“Well, it’s very nice to meet you, Zoey. Maybe we could be friends, hang out some time.” He added. I heard a snarl rip from Kael’s throat, and was thanking the lord Drake couldn’t hear it as he walked away.
Kael! What the hell was that? I thought, a little frightened.
“Oh, he wasn’t just thinking ‘hang out’.” He replied overly angry.
I mean the snarl! How the hell…what the hell…I couldn’t think of what to say, I didn’t know ghosts could do that.
“Oh right, I never explained what ghost really are like to you.” He began suddenly calmer. “You see, we are actually a lot like vampires, apart from the fangs, and thirsting for blood. We growl and all that, and we are pale, cold, and absolutely gorgeous to the living. Our senses are way better than yours…also, our strength, speed and hearing is unbelievable. Not to mention, we stay at the age we were when we died.” He replied softly and happily. I sighed.
Well, Kael that means…when I grow up, you’ll still be seventeen. I said sadly. I didn’t want to loose Kael, I loved him. It may sound stupid considering, he’s dead, but I’m serious. He became suddenly sad, and then was a little happier.
“Well, really, I’m older than you no matter what. I just am trapped in this age.”
Kael! He touched my shoulder,
“I’m sorry.”
****When Zoey is talking to Kael, during school, she is thinking it...when she isn't around others, she's is normally speaking, this just wont let me change the font for only those parts.****
