I would have never guessed that tonight was the night I died. But I guess that’s the way death works, huh? You don’t expect it before its staring you in the face
with mock humour. I went on with my ordinary life thinking of ordinary things; a mid-term there, a boyfriend here, my frizzy hair everywhere. Nothing whatsoever peculiar happened to me that day.
But then I died. And things got weird.
Carry Elmer is the only person that knows my secret. I like to call it my Death Secret. Oh, Carry, Carry. My sweet Carry. Friends like you come from Heaven.
Only to land in Hell.
Carry Elmer is the type who punches a person in the face without hesitation. Nobody likes her, everybody loves her. At least, they have to…if they know what’s good for them.
I like Carry Elmer.
She’s something special. One time I asked her what her ultimate dream was and she replied, “To climb the tallest tree in the world.” I gave her a quizzical expression.
“You don’t even know how to climb, Carry.”
“Yeah, but why should that stop me. Wouldn’t you want to look down from the highest tree peak…down on the whole world and know you’re on top of it? The sky dimming low, the branches
fluttering in the night breeze as the day comes to a cease…Oh, the beauty!” She said dramatically, spreading her arms wide open. I rolled my eyes at her.
“You should be a poet.” I remarked.
“Poetry is for people who are too scared to express themselves in actions. Instead of talking about the beauty of my dream, I am going to do it.” Her rosy lips curled into a gallant
“And you’re coming with me.”
“You’re even more insane for thinking I would do that with you.”
“Oh come on Aniqe! We’re in Australia, the largest trees grow here! Let’s climb one.” Carry’s dark eyes sparkled with a light I had never seen before.
“I thought you wanted to climb the largest tree in the world, not just in Australia.”
‘Well, we have to start somewhere, don’t we? Come on, spring break is coming up; we can take a little vacation into Tasmania… Come on, Aniqe, say that you’ll go!”
I let out a heavy sigh, relinquishing to my fate. “Do I have a choice?” Carry let out a squeal of excitement. I was going to climb twenty-five story trees with no experience at all, an insane
friend, and not a brain of my own.
I just signed my death wish.
