Matthew Willabanks watched his twin turn away from him, which had hurt. Coming out of the closet had been his hardest decision since he had found out that his attraction was not to the opposite sex. Matthew had chosen the lesser of two evils by first telling his twin, John, first rather than their parents.
Matthew sat numbly and watched as his twin did the same, taking his normal spot on the other side of the cafeteria. Normally, they would make eye contact and laugh as the new principal tripped his way into the cafeteria. Today, though, John simply shrugged off his twin’s gaze. Matthew nodded, excepting his twin’s choice to ignore him, even though he just wanted to cry and throw himself at his brother’s feet, begging for forgiveness. John was cold and always analyzing things; when given something like what Matt had told him, he needed time to think things over before he truly gave his verdict. And to Matt, John’s opinion of him was the most important, so he would give his twin time; hoping that John would approach him sooner, rather than later.
“Hey, Matthew,” A quite voice startled Matt from his thoughts, “did you… um...” The voice trailed off as Matt turned to gaze at the speaker.
“Yes, Peter?” Asked Matt annoyed that Petey had interrupted his thoughts and called him by his full name. “Did I what?”
The smaller boy blinked before continuing, “Did you get the history notes?” His face turned red and he had rushed the words out, leaving Matt to blink before he took out his history notes and gave them to the other boy.
“Thanks.” Petey said lamely, he had wanted to know whether or not Matt had come out to his family yet, but Matt had stared at him and scrutinized him, making Petey all the more nervous, so he had chickened out. Matt nodded in acknowledgment, but didn’t comment; instead he had shifted his gaze back to John.
There was something about John that made Matt’s heart leap for the moon whenever he was near. But Matt didn’t analyze things like John had the tendency to do, he just let things be until he could no longer deny or ignore it. John, on the other hand, had analyzed the way Matt looked at him like he was his twin’s very world, and took in every word like they were the very key to survival.
It was when John had hit a very unnerving conclusion, which his twin’s sexuality had confirmed for him that very day, that he took up one of Matt’s traits and decided to leave well enough alone, he would look into it if it became crucial, but for now, it would keep like yesterday’s leftovers in the fridge.
