Topic: Rules (Read before doing anything else)

The Review Chain is a house where people can get solid, constructive reviews on their work.

How it works is that first you review someone’s piece and then someone else reviews yours.

How it works:
•The first person asks for a review on one of their pieces.
•The second person then gives the first person a constructive review. They can then ask for one of their piece’s to be reviewed.
•The third person then gives the second person a constructive review and then asks for one of their piece’s to be reviewed.
And on it goes, like a chain.

You have to review the exact person’s before you, which is the most recent comment. Also you need to review the specific work they ask for. You can only ask for one piece to be reviewed at a time, and if it is a novel, only one chapter.

The most important thing is that the review has to be constructive. A constructive review is not ‘I liked it, keep writing.’ For it to be constructive you should state some particular things you liked about it and why. Also state some things that could use improvement and why. Some points that you could comment on:
•Plot      •Character’s       •Dialogue       •Writing style   •Flow/Structure   •Grammar/ spelling- paragraphs, tense, commas, etc.       •Opening/ middle/ end
•Anything else you can think of

For the review to be considered constructive you need to state at least one thing you like and didn’t like and why. Your review must be at least 100 words (approximately 9 lines in the comment boxes). The more you say the more the writer can improve.
Also be kind, we're all here to encourage one another.

If you feel that you have been unfairly reviewed; so the reviewer hasn’t been helpful or said very little, or if you accidentally got skipped or missed, then let me know and I’ll take a look. Usually I'll either try and ask the person to give you another review, or I'll review it myself. I am more than happy to do whatever I can to make sure you get a constructive review, that's what I'm here for. I do check some but not all so please tell me. If the chain has continued on please still say something to me.

There are different categories which you can post in:
- Short Stories
- Novels
- Poems
- Other
- Simple Reviews

In the Other category you can ask for anything to be reviewed. This can be scripts, essays, anything. You can also ask for stories, poems and novels to be reviewed in this section, it is open for everything.
The Simple Reviews category is different to all the others, it is the place where reviews do not need to be constructive. This is for the people who still want to review but who may not have the time to give a constructive review. Any types of writing can be asked for.

Not all of the categories appear on the homepage but they can accessed by clicking Forum. Also you can Subscribe to each topic to get updates on when new pieces are up for review.

Please don't post irrelevant things to the forum topics already there, or create your own. The main reason for this house is reviewing. If there is a topic you'd like to see which you think would be helpful for the group, then you're welcome to send me a message about it.
If you want to advertise your writing without reviewing there's a topic called Writing Plugs where you can just ask people to review your writing, or mention a bit about it.

I have created a short survey to gauge an idea of what people think of this house. It would be much appreciated if you do it. It is anonymous and only takes a few minutes.
https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/QF87XHD

If anyone has any questions feel free to ask, I am more than happy to answer or explain anything. If anyone has any suggestions those are also very welcome.

As you've probably all seen, the house has an amazing picture. This was designed by ShadaStorm120.

Thank you to those who have read through all these rules. If you haven’t read all the rules and just skipped to the end go back and read them (this is your second warning- don't worry there'll be a third).

I hope everyone enjoys this and gets some great reviews from it.

I am very glad that you posted these rule clarifications! I believe that if people will follow these suggestions & think about how they, themselves would want someone to review their own work, this format will be a very constructive way to aid all of us in promoting & enhancing our own work as well as helping others to do the same thing!
Once again, thank you! I'm happy to do anything I can to make this a better experience for anyone & everyone!

Thank you Spyguy, I appreciate the effort you've spent with this house.

You are very welcome! I love the idea of providing more input for each other! All of us benefit from that I think!

That's what I hope this house will do, the more that can benefit in any way the better.

Re: Rules (Read before doing anything else)

So, if I find a story sounds interesting, but its further down the chain and has passed, I can still read them, but they won't count towards the chain?

Yes, that's right. You have to review the person next in line (which is whoever has the last post), for it to count towards the chain. You're welcome to read any other stories that you find interesting, but unfortunately those don't count.

Re: Rules (Read before doing anything else)

Ok, thanks for clarifying

Re: Rules (Read before doing anything else)

I don't find the category here for poems, but I recently posted a poem here to this house, "Who do YOU see when you look in the Mirror?" I'd love to get some opinions on it!

The topic for forums is here:

I hope that helps

I just wanted to add my thanks for posting the rules too.
I think this house will be really great and helpful because it will help us improve and we can give/get feedback.
Thank you for creating it.

I have read the rules. I recently finished editing a chapter I’ve been procrastinating on since April, will that chapter be eligible to enter? I ask only cause it’s a good solo chapter that can be read without needing to read the rest of the book.

It's eligible if it's uploaded after the contest start date which was the 1st of October. So if you uploaded it in April the no, but if you haven't put it up yet, then yes

Re: Rules (Read before doing anything else)

I’m new here, and this is a stupid question but I have to know: where exactly is the review chain?

That depends. If you look at the list of topics in the forums. You'll find topics such as novels, short stories, poems, etc. That is where the review chain is. It really depends on what do you want. If you want for someone to review a novel, go to novels. If you want a short story, go to short stories, and so on and so forth. Hope this helps smile

this seems broken. Sure, it makes sense, but the community now has more than 100 people on it and it should be hard to even know who's turn it is to post their writings.

Generally there's not too many issues with knowing who's next in line and when you can post. If there are ever any issues I'm happy to give reviews to make up for it.

Re: Rules (Read before doing anything else)

I have read the rules. However, I have a doubt. I - maybe because I am new in Booksie and in the Review Chain House....or because my enthusiasm and happiness to see my work published- I published about seven of my poems without reviewing anything yet. Should I delete my poems from my book in progress? Might I start reviewing without deleting the poems I have already published so far - just about an hour ago, maybe two?
I promise this won't happen again.

Hi Jasmine. Thanks so much for joining the house, it's great to see you here. There's no need for you to delete your poems, it doesn't matter when the work was uploaded on here or whether you've reviewed anything or not. You're welcome to start reviewing whenever you'd like, and you're welcome to post as many poems as you'd like as well until then as well.

Thanks a lot for your reply, Archia. This is amazing.....but there are things I have to become familiar with. Again, thanks for your help.
