This one I think is my most personal poem. I made the voluntary choice to move away from California to the east coast, to leave behind a home I had spent almost my entire life there. I miss it more than I could ever express, and I'm happy to be visiting in September. Still, visiting is never the same as living there. Moving through every road, every coastline each day. It's painful.
This is a story about my experience whilst traveling down the mighty brown murky waters of the Padma River in Bangladesh on a large boat that looked like it shouldn't of been sailing whilst in a middle of an almighty storm which caused the boat to ever so slightly lean to its side, it is a short story about an experience that could of cost me my life as boats like the one I was on tend to sink in Bangladesh!
Recently on a visit to Aurangabad in Maharashtra had a chance to see the ‘Bibi Ka Maqbara’. Anybody who is about the enter the gates and seeing the monument for the first time would think ‘Hey! have i come to Agra’. It resembles the Taj Mahal.
It was built by Aurangzeb’s son Prince Azam Shah in memory of his mother Dilras Banu Begum. Aurangzeb was initially not in favour of his son building the monument but later relented. It was built between 1651 to 1661 A.D. It cost Rs. Seven Lakh to build however much lower than Taj Mahal which cost ShahJahan Rs. 32 million to build.
The mausoleum is built on a high square platform with four minarets at the four corners exactly like the Taj Mahal and can be approached through steps from three sides. The onion shaped dome is however much smaller than the dome of the Taj. The minarets are also smaller than the minarets of the Taj Mahal.
In 2010, unable to find any teaching jobs in California, I loaded my minivan with my belongings and drove 5,000 miles towards Pennsylvania where I heard they were hiring. I kept a daily blog on Facebook and as people followed it, what I planned as a week-long trip ended up being a month. I visited historic sites, visited friends and family and talked a lot about mid-life changes in an attempt to understand things when all the plans you have made fall apart. Three decades earlier I had read William Least Heat Moon's wonderful book "Blue Highways" having no idea I would someday be doing something similar.
The thing about traveling, sometimes you never really go anywhere...Joella is sitting on a plane on New Years Eve, yet it hasn't taken off yet. When the stranger sitting beside her makes her day (or evening) it is bound to be a better adventure sitting on a stationary plane than watching T.V like she would have been...
