In a dome of blue streaked with wisps of grays and whites, the desolately turbulent sea calms to stillness.  Here, there, and everywhere in between is empty vastness, but for two wandering entities given Fates one chance, an encounter.  She is a rundown raft hanging on to tattered ends. He is a worn vessel, cold, rusted and cracked at the joints. Two lost souls adrift finally in tangible distance from one another – both peculiar, both in need of rescue, perhaps desperate for each other’s salvation.

A mirage, a trick of the mind, she tells herself. Trick or not, she throws him the other end of her lifeline. His eyes brighten and darken in the same instance. He holds her rope in his hand almost questioning its intent, maybe questioning his own intent. Neither pulling nor letting go – he ties her in tow.  All the while, another storm brews in his mind and in her heart:

Slim

Hope, the one true thing keeping me tethered to you. It kept me afloat on this leaky raft as I watched your beleaguered ship fill with your worries and indecision, swaying back and forth, back and forth. I reached out. But, time after time you pushed away, so I stay away waiting, anticipating for you to take my hand and take me in.

Let me in. Let me help patch the crevices of your broken thoughts. Give me a chance to ease the worn contours of your worried face. Let me on – take my hand – save me. I can be a part of you and you of me.

But, it wasn’t so. Your fraught mind, cold and self-centered, in a moment of utter carelessness, or possibly in calculated murder, severed the one solid thing that bound us together. Heartless, your eyes darkened as you lit up in a most sadistic moment. You watched me unravel. You watched me drown. You let me sink along with all the trust and hope I carried for you.

There’s nothing left to salvage.

One wandering soul adrift…
