Last Shot

How cliché, thought Dizzy…

They were trailing by one point at the buzzer of the fourth quarter. State finals. Tommy had sacrificed himself to get Dizzy the penalty at the last minute. That was Tommy for you. There could be a half a second left on the clock and he’d find a way to get that one last point.

The house was packed, of course. The roar of the crowd was so loud that Dizzy could almost feel the polished wood floor trembling beneath his feet. Everyone in the stands was going absolutely mental. It was intimidating to say the least.

He put his toe to the white free-throw line and tried his best not to look at the audience, failing miserably. How could he not look. All the celebrities were present. Nicholson was there, of course. Brangelina, Sean Penn… Is that Joe Pesci in the fifty row? Dear Lord, is that Michael JORDAN watching??

It was the game shot. Dizzy’s team had lost over seven first string players to get to this game, this moment. They had fought hard for it, and now he was standing on the free-throw line with the ball in his hands, and he would either be the comma that continued them on to the National Championships or the period that would end their near perfect season.

No Pressure, He thought.

He closed his eyes and pictured the net in his mind. He pulled his focus away from the crowd, then slowly repeated his mantra three times, just like coach Woodarm had taught him.

I am… I am… I am!

Dizzy opened his eyes, raised his arms to shoot the ball and wouldn’t you know it, they fell off.

But then, that’s why Zombie Basketball is the number one watched sport in America.
