Why do we long for what cannot be?

Clandestine dreams that cannot be

Are what my soul ensures I see

My focus hazed to what is there

I choose to yearn what cannot be

Though told by friends the truth benign

I clutch my paper valentine

My dreams of what can never be

Of what will never become mine

Like bells, these dreams, they ring the songs

Of what my heart so gravely longs

Far away and sight unseen

Tolling promise unbelonged

Why crave, why dream what cannot be?

My hopes of tinseled filigree

Sparkle behind walls of glass

Upon my unreached Christmas tree

And yet I cannot let them go

These reveries of melted snow

So haunted by what cannot be

And passions I will never know
