Within a day

By: 1122

I live a life within a day

Born on cusp of waking eye

Crying with the dawn

Hungry for what yonder lay

Parentless I grow alone

Learning from what others say

Managing to crawl

Through fields of pit and tripping stone

Noon brings adolescence nigh

Finally claiming life my own

Peering through the murk

Forward with determined sigh

Disappearing in the toils

With sweat and blood and tear I try

To seek what makes me whole

Where lie my gilded treasure spoils

Then wanes the geriatric sun

And end of life bereft uncoils

Sighing out of breath

Looking back at all I’ve done

Now climb into my coffined bed

My marbled epitaph begun

Content that I have lived

And ready to rejoin the dead
