The sky is black as pitch
a foreshadow of evil
thunder rumbles as lightning
like instantaneous tears appear then vanish
she cringes unknowingly, it approaches
The day is gorgeous, sky of sapphire
the sounds of birds and gentle breeze hypnotic
to one observing, she is off on some daydream
swaying slowly on the old tire swing
The pit of her stomach wrenches
as anxiety grows,
Fear sets in
her mouth begins to dry
and tears well in her eyes
whispering " No... stay away"
The tranquility of this utopia
is broken by a vehicle disturbing a Western rock garden
the unmistakable ding, ding, ding of keys
left in the ignition and a car door slammed
can be heard
Little hairs on her neck and back rise
like the fur of a frightened cat
her lips trremble
her face goes pale
the first sounds of its approach
fear has become her master
Footsteps across gravel
muffled thudding, labored breathing
from someone unaccustomed to
any length of physical exertion
Breath, hot, rasping, foul
choking her, stifling any cry
legs numb, she waits unmoving
a calloused hand grazes her shoulder
leaving in its wake
remnants of a shattered soul
Startled by the touch
torn from thought
a smile born of surprise
creasing her face
as she greets it...
