The view from the outside looking in.

there was a woman

whose life contained so much emotion

we worried it would kill her.

you may have seen her

swollen with sorrow or anger;

immobilized by regret or fear.

you may have caught her

occasionally,

glowing with hope

that was false or

love that was untrue.

but if you KNEW her

your heart would have ached,

your heart SHOULD have ached

as her laugh weakened

and her smile withdrew.

silently we all knew it was all too much.

too much for one person

to contain safely or sanely.

we kept a vigil

for her recovery

as the wounds accumulated.

but lives go on

as a whole or

in pieces.

for example,

she doesn't speak of

injustice or disappointment or failures

anymore.

other say she is healing.

she tells me

she feels empty.

perhaps feeling too much

was never really a problem

but feeling too little could be...

then again,

what the hell do I know?
