CHILDISH DREAMS THAT WERE NEVER MEANT TO BE
By Al Garcia
Dreams are illusions of what one day may be,
But never of what was meant to be.
Childish dreams and make believe,
The thing of fairytales and fantasies,
That like snowflakes in a wintery storm,
Fall in its cold and gusty winds
and slowly melt and fade away.
Childish dreams that were never meant to be,
Left to wither and to die upon a thousand battlefields.
Broken boys and shattered men,
Alone to feel the agony of dreams deceived,
And of life betrayed without a happily ever after,
As all childish dreams and fairytales always end.
How many unfinished dreams
And uncompleted fairytales and fantasies
Have I seen left untended and abandoned
By those who once believed in the magic
Of the night, and of dreams that made
Tomorrows seem inevitable and real?
Boys become men in war,
But they never let go their childish dreams.
For it is the dreams of a child
That fuel the passions of tomorrows
And of fairytales and fantasies
That texturize and emblazon
Each moment lived,
And each emotion felt and shared,
If only in a dream
that was never meant to be.
And we are left to remember
The little things that one would think
Would have faded with time,
And gone the way of childish dreams.
But like fairytales and fantacies,
They linger and evoke the rawness
Of ever after moments and visions
That only dreams can keep alive,
Of someone’s childish dreams
That were never meant to be.
