It’s dark outside and very quiet. Ella is feeling her breathe. It sounds like a storm. She is staring outside the window and seeing some episodes of her life.

Twenty years ago she met a boy named Clay in a grocery store. She was looking for some herbal spices.

“Are you looking for savory ?”

“Yes, do you work here?”

“No, but I am watching you for some time and I saw what you got from the other aisles . So savory right?”

“You know that is not cool what you were doing. At least not for me .”

“Who told you I wanted to be cool. I was just making sure you get the right spices. Otherwise your whole meal will ruin.”

“So you are like a chef or something?”

“Enjoy your meal . Good night.”

They meet again. Ella noticed Clay at first. Couple of seconds later Clay turned to her and gave a smile.

“How are you?”

“Good, and you?” Ella replied.

“You live around here , I guess.”

“You do a lot of guessing but this time you are wrong. I came to visit my aunt.”

“Your aunt must me waiting for you then. Why don’t you come for a morning cup of coffee tomorrow here and I will give you some very easy recipes. Your aunt will love it.”

“How you can be so assure.”

With a witty smile Clay replies, “I know your Aunt”.

Clay and Ella soon discovered they are talking with each other over the phone for a long time and their subjects knew no boundaries. Clay loved to argue with Ella but when they were done talking he always thought Ella was right. Ella on the other and took every word very seriously. She asked herself many times how Clay can be so arrogant. But was she appreciating that arrogance? One day at the coffee corner they were talking about expensive operations that a person sometimes chooses to go through.

“Why you do not understand Ella? You want to take that huge amount and expend it hoping that will fix you even when you are not sure about the procedure. Some procedure which  was not tested on many and the chance that you will survive is very little. “

“But there are chances even if it is small. And the doctors will not go for it if the previous cases didn’t show any promises. Why will  I not spend the money for a chance that will give me life? Or perhaps give  life to someone  else . They will perfect the procedure with time and my contribution will be worthwhile.”

“You will loose your money and your life and still you want to go for it ? You sound irrational to me .”

Tomorrow is that day for Ella. She will go through an operation. Either she will have another morning or the storm inside her will engulf her. “Clay , where are you?”
