“Abby?” I couldn't believe it. Of all people, the girl I think about every day. The girl who moved out of state and I hadn't spoken to in two years. The girl who was here, not only in state, but out here in the middle of nowhere, with me, standing before me.
I forgot for a moment where I was, or the fact that there were crazies about to attack us and make a possible meal of us. And I barely noticed Derrick and Brylee pushing past me to get inside while I just stared at the beautiful brunette before me.
“Adrian! I said come on!” Abby's voice penetrated my state of stupor and she grabbed my arm, pulling me inside and slamming the door shut. I could swear something had almost grabbed me, but a second later, we were...Oh my god, I can't believe Abby is really here. How? Why? When?
Derrick and Brylee moved on into the closed off gazebo, where there were about fifteen other people most literally camped out on the wood floor. There were some candles, flashlights, even a few outlets, allowing some cell phone chargers to be plugged in.
A pair of young men took flashlights to Brylee and Derrick's eyes before they could step inside, but after a quick flash across their eyes, they were released.
Adrian, Abby, and an older man were still standing by the doors, in a small room about the size of an elevator, and attached to the gazebo by a second set of doors.
The older man, after shining a cell phone light in Adrian's eyes and then making sure the door was safely locked, headed back into the gazebo. There, he waited for Abby to pull Adrian inside, before closing and locking the second set of doors.
“Adrian!” I heard her say, and I snapped out of my stupor for a second time within the past five seconds. I took a quick minute to look around and see where I was, though soon my eyes were back on Abby.
“So, what brings you back home?” I found myself asking quite nonchalantly, as if we hadn't just been chased miles to the middle of who-knows-where by stark raving mad hillbilly cannibals.
“My sister's wedding. I was shopping for some wedding presents when I ran into those...things. We're trying to figure out how we'll get back to the mall, or if we should go elsewhere. Some of these people have been here for almost a week now, and all came across this place the same way. Being chased.” Abby told me, a hard look in her green eyes.
