If the chance upon the evening came…

Could you hear your beating heart;
Steady, knowledgeable;
Telling tales of life?

Could you harken to a dropping pin;
Deafening, sharp;
Speaking songs of hardship?

Would you know if work was done;
Would you know if mind were made;
If all you heard was chatter,
If all you heard was blame?

If the chance upon the morning came…

Could you hear the singing birds;
Lovely, untimely;
Telling tales of woe?

Could you harken to the thistle’s rush;
Forgiving, nimble;
Speaking songs of kin?

Would you know if one was living;
Would you know if one was dead;
If all you heard was nonsense,
If all you heard crowded your head?

If the chance upon the sunset came…

Could you hear was the colors’ tune;
Glorious, chancing;
Telling tales of foreign land?

Could you harken you to the blowing wind,
Surpassing, cool;
Speaking songs of lifetime past?

If the chance upon a lifetime came…
