Breast Cancer – You Don’t Know…
That’s what’s on the internet.
These scientists?
They don’t know shit.
They don’t know how it feels,
to hear those terrible words,
“She has breast cancer,”
They just say them,
Pretend they’re sorry,
They get paid to do it.
You watch,
Terrified of what’s happening,
But you gotta be strong.
10 years old,
Watching as she fights it,
The one always there for you,
Your protector,
The one who nursed you,
Your own flesh and blood,
Your mother.
Nothing can prepare you for the trauma,
That lies ahead,
You read things that don’t help,
You ask,
‘why her?’
‘why my mum, so happy and healthy?’
‘what caused it?’
You watch as her hair falls out,
The chemo,
She’s sensitive to the sunlight,
The radiation,
What lies ahead?
Recovery is slow,
Her hair grows back,
five years on,
she’s ok,
the cancer’s gone,
but there are still problems,
side effects,
she can’t use her left arm too much,
it hurts,
the drip,
and more,
the hormone treatment,
the checkups,
you wonder,
will this be me?
