Love is Blind

It feels so great to be able to move around freely, to be able to do everything on my own and not rely on anyone.

Six months ago, I would have laughed at the person saying walking alone on streets, going back to work or catching a bus would be an achievement for me. I heard the bus rumble towards the bus station. I stepped on, catching each pole for support—I started seat hunting.

“Ma’am please.” A warm hand over my shoulder led me to a seat. I attached my butt to the seat and sighed in relief.

“thanks.” I mumbled.

“No problem.” He sounded like a young high school guy. So yeah, I would use the word sounded since I am blind.  I sat in a window seat and popped in the ear phones. I am an editor and to say that God played a totally ROFL joke on me, would be an understatement. I mean. Come on, which book editor is blind? Well, I am and my boss was good enough to still keep me in the job, until I wanted to resign myself.

My phone buzzed in my ears bringing me back to the present.

“Hello.”

“Hey Mrs Reed, where are you?” my husband Lucas, teased me. He always did that. It has been a month since I’d been doing the ‘Blind-woman-goes-to-work-alone’ thing. The first few days my husband helped me by traveling with me but later he had to stop because he had his own things to do. At first, he was mad and told me I didn’t need to do it but then after a while he did what he could do best which was obliging to my wishes. I was more than positive he would jump off a cliff if I told him too.

I can confidently say, he loves me like no one else can.

“I am in the bus, what are you doing Mr Reed?”

“Thinking about you, which reminds me—what did you have for breakfast? I see no empty plates.”

“An apple.”

“why?”

“you’re asking a blind person? Well, because I had no time to play search and eat. That is why.”

“Sucks to be blind huh? Eat from the cafeteria, understood?”

before I could answer to his question, the driver called out to me. “Angela, your stop.”

“Lucas baby, I gotta go.”

“love you too.” I heard him say as I clicked the phone shut. With the help of the cane stick I walked down slowly.

“Angela.” the driver called again.

“yeah?”

“Where’s that handsome husband of yours today?”

“my husband?” he must be talking about some random guy. I had been coming to and fro from work, all ALONE.

“yeah. The man in army jacket, who accompanied you every day.”

“he..he has work today.” So I lied.

“Great guy, he should love you alot to be following you to and fro from work huh?”

“yeah, there’s no one like him.” a lone tear escaped from my eye.
